Quick answer
Save your reel as a draft first (tap Save while editing). Then get a strong connection, ideally Wi-Fi, and keep the Facebook app open until the upload finishes. If it still fails, restart the app and resume from Add new (top right of Feed) > Reel > Drafts. Update Facebook from Google Play or the App Store, and if that doesn’t help, uninstall and reinstall. If your reel came out in lower quality, Meta says mixing HDR and non-HDR clips, or some stickers and effects, can make it share in standard format.
Does this match what you see?
- The reel stays on uploading or processing and never finishes.
- Sharing fails with an error, or the reel disappears after you tap Share.
- The app closes or freezes while you’re editing or sharing.
- Your reel posted, but looks duller or lower quality than the original.
- A long video you posted appears as a reel instead of a normal video.
iPhone & iPadAndroid
Meta gives the same steps for the Facebook app on Android and iPhone, and a shorter version for Facebook Lite.
Why your video was posted as a reel
Meta says that since September 2025, all videos on Facebook are Reels: every video posted is shared as a reel, regardless of length or orientation. Meta’s creator blog adds that reels have no length or format limits. If your long or horizontal video appeared as a reel, that’s expected.
Why this happens: the possible causes
Match what you see to the likely cause.
| What you see | Likely cause | Do this first |
|---|---|---|
| Stuck uploading or processing | Weak connection, or the app was closed during upload | Fix 1, then Fix 2 |
| Fails, freezes or closes while sharing | An app glitch | Fix 3 |
| Still failing after a restart | Old app version or a damaged install | Fix 4 |
| Shared in lower quality | HDR and non-HDR clips mixed, or effects that don’t support HDR | About quality |
| Can’t post anything at all | A restriction on your account | Restricted account |
- The connection isn’t strong enoughCheck this first
Uploading video needs a steady connection. Meta recommends Wi-Fi, or a strong mobile signal if Wi-Fi isn’t available.
- The app was closed before the upload finishedCheck this first
Meta says to keep the Facebook app open until your content has finished uploading.
- An app glitch or old versionPossible
Meta’s fixes include restarting the app, updating it and, if needed, reinstalling it.
- HDR clips or effectsPossible
Meta says mixing HDR and non-HDR clips, or adding some stickers or effects, can make the reel share in standard format. This affects quality, not whether it uploads.
Try these 60-second checks first
- Save a draft before you try anything else.
- Move to Wi-Fi, or somewhere with a strong mobile signal.
- Keep Facebook open on screen until the upload finishes.
- Check that your phone has free storage space.
How to fix it, step by step
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.
Fix 1: Save your reel as a draft first
Meta suggests saving a draft so you don’t lose your work when you restart the app. It protects your edit while you try the other fixes.
- While editing your reel, tap Save.
- Your reel is now in your drafts. You can continue later from Add new > Reel > Drafts (Fix 3).
Did it work? Your reel appears in Drafts.
Fix 2: Get a strong connection, and keep the app open
Meta’s first fix for reels that won’t share is a strong connection, and keeping the app open until the upload is complete.
- Connect to Wi-Fi for the best experience. If Wi-Fi isn’t available, make sure you have a strong mobile signal.
- If you’re on Wi-Fi, reconnect to your network or try a different one.
- Keep the Facebook app open until the upload has finished. Meta says to keep the app open, so avoid switching apps or locking the phone while it uploads.
- It can also help to turn off any VPN, and Android’s Data Saver or iPhone’s Low Data Mode, while uploading.
- Check your data bundle hasn’t run out.
Did it work? The upload bar reaches the end and your reel appears on your profile.
Fix 3: Restart the app and resume from your draft
Meta says restarting the Facebook app can fix some sharing problems. Your draft is waiting for you afterwards.
iPhone & iPad
- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen, pause, and swipe Facebook away.
- Open Facebook again.
- From your Feed, tap Add new in the top right, then Reel.
- If asked “Continue editing your latest draft?”, tap Continue editing. Or tap Drafts, then your draft.
- Share it again on a strong connection.
Android
- Close Facebook from your recent apps, or Settings > Apps > Facebook > Force stop.
- Open Facebook again.
- From your Feed, tap Add new in the top right, then Reel.
- If asked “Continue editing your latest draft?”, tap Continue editing. Or tap Drafts, then your draft.
- Share it again on a strong connection.
Did it work? The reel shares and appears on your profile.
Fix 4: Update Facebook, then reinstall if needed
If the steps above don’t help, Meta suggests updating the app, and if problems continue, uninstalling and reinstalling it.
iPhone & iPad
- Update Facebook: App Store > your profile icon > App Updates > Update.
- Still failing? Delete Facebook and reinstall it from the App Store. Make sure you know your password and can get your login code first.
Android
- Update Facebook: Google Play > your profile icon > Manage apps & device > Updates available > Update next to Facebook.
- Still failing? Uninstall Facebook and reinstall it from Google Play. Make sure you know your password and can get your login code first.
Meta doesn’t say whether drafts survive a reinstall. Keep your original clips in your phone’s gallery before reinstalling.
Did it work? The reel uploads after the update or reinstall.
Fix 5: Free up storage space
Editing and uploading video needs room for temporary files. Google’s Android help notes problems can start when less than 10% of storage is free.
iPhone & iPad
- Settings > General > iPhone Storage: offload or delete apps you don’t use and remove videos you’ve backed up.
Android
- Settings > Storage: remove unused apps and large files you no longer need.
Did it work? Your phone has comfortable free space and the upload completes.
Reel shared, but the quality looks lower?
Meta explains two reasons a reel may be shared in standard format instead of HDR (High Dynamic Range):
- Your reel mixes clips recorded with and without HDR. Meta adjusts them all to standard format.
- You added stickers or some effects that may not support HDR.
To keep HDR, use clips that were all recorded in HDR, and leave out stickers and effects that switch the reel to standard format.
Using Facebook Lite?
Meta’s steps for Facebook Lite are shorter:
- Use Wi-Fi or a strong mobile signal, and reconnect or switch networks if needed.
- Keep the Facebook Lite app open until the upload finishes.
- Restart Facebook Lite.
- Update Facebook Lite from Google Play, and if problems continue, uninstall and reinstall it.
For other Lite problems, see Facebook Lite not working.
How to know it worked
- Your reel uploads fully and appears on your profile.
- Drafts are saved before you restart or reinstall.
- The quality matches what you expect, or you know why it was shared in standard format.
Still not working? Your next steps
- Report the problem: ☰ Menu > Help and support > Report a problem, choose Video or Videos on Select product, and describe what happens.
- If you can’t post anything at all, check for a restriction in Facebook jail: restricted account.
- If sharing fails with “Something went wrong”, see Something went wrong when posting.
