Quick answer
Wait a minute and try again: the error is often temporary. If it comes back, note where you see it. Everywhere, for many people: Facebook is probably having problems, so wait. Only in the app: update it, close it and clear its cache. Only in a browser: try a private window, then clear facebook.com’s cookies and cache. Only when posting, sharing or using one feature: check for a restriction in Profile status, then report the problem from ☰ Menu > Help and support > Report a problem.
Does this match what you see?
- “Sorry, something went wrong.” with a note that Facebook is working on getting it fixed.
- The error appears when you log in, post, comment, share a link, upload a photo or open Marketplace.
- A related message: “Your request couldn’t be processed” or “An error occurred”.
- It happens every time on one screen, while the rest of Facebook works.
- It happens in the app but not on facebook.com, or the other way round.
iPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)
The wording varies slightly between the app, facebook.com and different languages. Match the meaning, not every word.
Why this happens: the possible causes
The error message is the same, but the cause depends on where it appears.
| Where you see it | Likely cause | Do this first |
|---|---|---|
| Everywhere, and friends see it too | A wider Facebook problem | Is Facebook down? |
| Only in the app | Old app version, damaged cache or a data-saving setting | Fix 2 |
| Only in a browser | Stale cookies or cache, or an extension blocking Facebook | Fix 3 |
| When logging in or resetting your password | A security check, too many attempts or a session problem | Fix 4 |
| When posting, commenting or sharing | A restriction, a blocked link or a file Facebook can’t accept | Fix 5 |
| In Marketplace, settings or one feature only | A problem with that feature or a limit on your account | Fix 6 |
- A temporary problem on Facebook’s sideCheck this first
The message itself usually says Facebook is working on getting it fixed. Many of these clear up on their own within minutes.
- The app or browser is out of date or holding damaged dataCheck this first
Old app versions and stale cookies or cache files are the most common reasons the error keeps coming back for one person.
- Your connection is filtered or unstablePossible
VPNs, data-saving settings and networks that filter social media can make requests fail part-way.
- A limit or restriction on your accountPossible
If the error only appears when you post, comment or use one feature, the real reason may be a restriction that the error message doesn’t mention.
Try these 60-second checks first
- Wait one minute and try again.
- Try the same thing on another device or in a browser. If it works there, the problem is your app or browser.
- Ask someone else whether Facebook works for them.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and turn off any VPN.
How to fix it, step by step
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.
Fix 1: Wait a minute, then retry once
This error is often temporary. Repeating the same action many times in a row rarely helps and can trigger a temporary block.
- Wait about a minute, then try the action again once.
- If it fails again, check whether Facebook works for other people: Is Facebook down?.
- If it’s only you, carry on with the fix for where you see the error.
Did it work? The action works on the second try.
Fix 2: Only in the app: update, restart and clear the cache
When the website works but the app doesn’t, the app itself is the problem: usually an old version or damaged temporary files.
iPhone & iPad
- Update Facebook: App Store > your profile icon > App Updates > Update.
- Close Facebook (swipe up from the bottom, pause, swipe it away) and open it again.
- Still failing? Offload the app: Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Facebook > Offload App, then Reinstall App. Apple says this keeps the app’s documents and data.
Android
- Update Facebook: Google Play > your profile icon > Manage apps & device > Updates available.
- Force stop Facebook in Settings > Apps > Facebook, then open it again.
- Still failing? On the same page tap Storage & cache > Clear cache. Leave Clear storage alone: it signs you out.
- If you use Data Saver, allow Facebook unrestricted data.
More detailed steps for each phone are in Facebook not working.
Did it work? The same screen opens without the error.
Fix 3: Only on facebook.com: private window, extensions, then cookies
In a browser, the error usually comes from stale cookies or cache, or an extension (often an ad blocker or privacy tool) blocking part of Facebook.
Computer (browser)
- Open facebook.com in a private or incognito window and log in. If it works there, your normal browser data or an extension is the cause.
- Turn off extensions one at a time, especially ad blockers and privacy tools, and reload.
- Chrome on a computer: More (top right) > Delete browsing data > tick Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files > Delete data. Google notes this doesn’t delete saved passwords.
- Safari on iPhone: Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced > Website Data > Remove All Website Data.
- Clearing cookies signs you out of websites, so have your Facebook password ready.
- Make sure your browser is up to date, or try a different browser.
Did it work? facebook.com loads without the error in your normal window.
Fix 4: When logging in or resetting your password
At login, “something went wrong” often hides a security check, too many attempts in a short time, or a problem with saved login data.
- Stop trying for a while. Many quick attempts can make Facebook more cautious, not less.
- Then try once on a phone or computer you’ve used for Facebook before, on a familiar network.
- Type your password by hand instead of using autofill.
- If you’re asked for a code, use the newest one only. See login code not received.
- If you still can’t get in, follow Can’t log in to Facebook. If you think someone else got in, go to facebook.com/hacked (guide).
Did it work? You reach your feed after logging in.
Fix 5: When posting, commenting or sharing
If everything else works but posting fails, check for a restriction first. A generic error can appear where you’d expect a restriction notice. Links and files can also be refused.
- Open Profile status (profile photo > ⋯ > Profile Settings > More options > Profile status) and look for an active restriction. If there is one, see Facebook jail: restricted account.
- If you’re sharing a link, try the post without it. If it works, Facebook may be blocking that link (for example, if it has been reported as spam or unsafe).
- If you’re uploading a photo or video, try a smaller file or a different one, on Wi-Fi.
- Try posting the same thing from facebook.com in a browser. If it works there, fix the app (Fix 2).
- If you’ve posted the same thing in many groups quickly, wait. Fast, repeated posting can trigger a temporary block.
Did it work? Your post or comment appears on your profile or in the group.
Fix 6: Only in Marketplace, settings or one other feature
When one feature fails and the rest of Facebook works, it’s either a fault in that feature or a limit on your access to it.
- Marketplace: check your Marketplace status in Profile status > Profile features > Marketplace. See Marketplace not showing and listing not showing.
- Settings or Accounts Center: update the app, then try the same change on facebook.com in a browser.
- Messenger: see Messenger not sending messages.
- If it keeps happening, report it: ☰ Menu > Help and support > Report a problem. Choose Continue to report a problem, pick the feature on Select product (for example Marketplace or Settings), describe what you did, and add a screen recording if you can.
Did it work? The feature works, or your report has been sent with a clear description.
Error messages and what they mean
These are the messages as people report seeing them. The exact wording on your screen can differ by app version, language and region, so match the meaning, not every word.

Frequently asked questions
What does “Sorry, something went wrong” mean on Facebook?
It’s a general error that doesn’t say what failed. It’s often temporary. If it keeps coming back, where you see it (login, posting, one feature, app only or browser only) tells you which fix to use.
Is Facebook down when it says something went wrong?
Sometimes. If friends see the same error at the same time, it’s probably a wider problem and you just need to wait. If only you see it, the fix is on your side.
Why do I get “something went wrong” when I try to post?
Check Profile status for a restriction first. Then try the post without any link, with a smaller photo or video, or from facebook.com.
Why do I get “something went wrong” when I log in?
It can hide a security check or too many attempts. Wait a while, then try once on a device and network you’ve used before. If that fails, follow our Can’t log in guide.
Will clearing the cache delete my Facebook account or posts?
No. Clearing the cache removes temporary files only. On Android, avoid Clear storage, which signs you out and resets the app.
Did this solve your problem?
Your answer stays in your browser — nothing is sent or stored. The “tell us” link opens your own email app.
