Quick answer
Meta says a story is visible for 24 hours, to the audience you choose for that story, on both Facebook and Messenger. If someone can’t see your story, check its audience (for example Friends instead of Public). If it vanished, it has probably expired. If your story archive is on, Meta says it was saved there automatically. If you can’t pick photos or videos, Facebook needs access to your phone’s camera roll: allow it in your phone’s settings. If sharing still fails, update the app, check your connection and clear the cache.
Does this match what you see?
- The Share button doesn’t work, or the story never appears.
- You can’t see your photos or videos when you try to add one.
- A friend says they can’t see your story.
- Your story no longer shows.
- You want to share to a Page’s story rather than your own.
iPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)
Story steps and rules are Meta’s; phone permission steps follow Google’s guide or are general. Upload troubleshooting is general advice.
How Facebook stories work
- 24 hours: Meta says anything you share to your story, whether a photo, a video or a post, is only visible for 24 hours.
- Your choice of audience: you choose who sees each story, for example Public or Friends.
- Facebook and Messenger: your chosen audience can see your story in both.
- Story archive: if it’s turned on, Meta says your stories are saved there automatically when they disappear. Only you can see it.
- Creative tools: in the apps you can add text (Aa), Stickers, Draw or Effects before you share.
Why this happens: the possible causes
Match what you see to the likely reason.
| What you see | Likely reason | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| A friend can’t see your story | They’re not in the audience you chose | Check the audience |
| Your story is gone | Stories last 24 hours; saved only if your archive is on | Check your archive |
| No photos or videos to choose | Facebook can’t access your camera roll | Allow access |
| Share fails or nothing happens | App version, connection or stored data | Fix uploads |
| You want it on your Page | You’re posting from your profile, not the Page | Page stories |
- The story’s audienceCheck this first
Meta says you choose the audience for each story you share, for example Public or Friends, and only that audience can see it.
- The 24-hour limitCheck this first
Meta says a story is available for 24 hours. After that it drops off, though you can revisit it in your story archive.
- No access to your camera rollPossible
Meta says you can only share photos or videos from your device if you’ve given Facebook access to your camera roll.
- An app or connection problemPossible
If everything is set up correctly and sharing still fails, an outdated app, a weak connection or damaged stored data are the usual suspects.
Try these 60-second checks first
- Check the story’s audience before or after sharing (Public, Friends and so on).
- Remember stories last 24 hours.
- Make sure Facebook can access your photos in your phone’s settings.
- Update the Facebook app and try again on Wi-Fi.
How to fix it, step by step
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.
- Fix 1: Someone can’t see your story? Check its audience
- Fix 2: Story disappeared? It has probably expired: check your story archive
- Fix 3: Turn on your story archive so future stories are kept
- Fix 4: See who viewed your story (and why some show as “others”)
- Fix 5: Can’t choose photos or videos? Let Facebook access them
- Fix 6: Story won’t share? Check the steps, then the app
- Fix 7: Posting to a Page’s story? Switch into the Page first
Fix 1: Someone can’t see your story? Check its audience
Meta says you choose the audience for each story, and only that audience can see it, across both Facebook and Messenger.
iPhone & iPad
- When creating a story, tap Settings, then Privacy in the bottom left, and choose the audience (for example Public or Friends).
- Then tap Share.
Android
- When creating a story, tap Settings in the bottom left, then Privacy, and choose the audience (for example Public or Friends).
- Then tap Share.
Computer (browser)
- When creating a story, click the audience selector next to Your story (for example Public or Friends).
- Then click Share to Story.
Meta says you choose the audience for each story, and you can change your story privacy settings at any time (Meta’s story privacy page (external site, opens in a new tab)). If the person isn’t your friend and the story was set to Friends, they won’t see it.
Did it work? The person you expected can see your next story.
Did Fix 1 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 1. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Fix 2: Story disappeared? It has probably expired: check your story archive
Meta says a story stays visible for 24 hours. If your story archive is turned on, Meta says stories are saved there automatically when they disappear. Only you can see your archive.
iPhone & iPad
- Tap Menu, then your name.
- Tap Options > Archive, then Story Archive at the top. (On an iPad: Menu > your name > Options > Story Archive.)
Android
- Tap Menu, then Options.
- Tap Archive, then Story Archive at the top.
- Want to keep a story on your profile? Open it in the archive, tap Highlight, and add it to a collection (Meta’s Android steps).
Computer (browser)
- From your Feed, click your profile picture in the left menu.
- Click Options, then Story Archive.
Two things to know from Meta: a story you delete before it disappears isn’t saved to your archive, and if your archive is turned off, expired stories aren’t saved automatically, though you can still archive a story manually (external site, opens in a new tab). To make sure future stories are kept, turn your story archive on.
Did it work? You’ve found the story in your archive, or you know why it wasn’t saved.
Did Fix 2 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 2. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Fix 3: Turn on your story archive so future stories are kept
Meta says that with the story archive on, your photos and videos are archived automatically after they disappear from your story. Only you can see it.
iPhone & iPad
- Tap Menu, then your name.
- Tap Options > Archive > Story archive at the top. (On an iPad: Options > Story archive.)
- Tap Settings at the top right and turn on Save to archive.
Android
- Tap Menu > Options.
- Tap Archive > Story archive at the top.
- Tap Settings at the top right and turn on Save to archive.
Computer (browser)
- From your Feed, click your profile picture in the left column.
- Click Options > Story archive > Settings.
- Under Story Archive Setting, click Turn On Story Archive.
Meta says archived stories may lose some features: stickers or filters may be compressed. With the archive off, you can still archive one story by hand, but Meta says that removes it from your active story straight away. In Facebook Lite or a mobile browser, the Settings option is under Options in the Story archive.
Did it work? Save to archive is on, and your next story appears in the archive after 24 hours.
Did Fix 3 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 3. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Fix 4: See who viewed your story (and why some show as “others”)
Meta says you can check who viewed or reacted to your story, and that only you can see your viewers.
iPhone & iPad
- Tap Your Story at the top of your Feed.
- Tap Viewers in the bottom left of any photo or video in your story. If you don’t see it, Meta says no one has viewed your story yet.
Android
- In the Stories section at the top of your Feed, tap Your Story.
- Tap Viewers in the bottom left of any photo or video in your story. If you don’t see it, Meta says no one has viewed your story yet.
Computer (browser)
- Go to the Stories section at the top of your Feed and click Your Story.
- Click Viewers in the bottom left. If no one has seen it yet, you’ll see No viewers yet.
How Meta says the list works: friends who viewed it may show up first; if you shared with Messenger connections, they may appear below your friends; on a Public story you may see friends, followers and some non-followers; and some people who preview your story may show up as “others”. You may also see the emoji someone reacted with next to their name.
Did it work? You can see your story’s viewer list.
Did Fix 4 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 4. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Fix 5: Can’t choose photos or videos? Let Facebook access them
Meta says you can only share photos or videos from your device if you’ve given Facebook access to your camera roll. You can grant access to everything, or (on iPhone and on Android 14 or later) only to selected items.
iPhone & iPad
- Open your iPhone’s Settings, find Facebook, and allow access to your photos: all of them, or only the ones you select. See Apple’s guide (linked below) if you can’t find it.
- Return to Facebook and try the story again.
Android
- Open your phone’s Settings > Apps (tap See all apps if needed) > Facebook > Permissions > Photos and videos, (Google’s steps; names vary by phone).
- Allow access. Meta says on Android 14 or later you can allow all photos and videos or just selected ones; earlier versions only allow all.
- Return to Facebook and try the story again.
Meta says that if you give Facebook access to your camera roll, it collects metadata about the media, such as the date and time, for features like reminding you about new photos. Apple’s and Google’s own guides explain app access on iPhone (external site, opens in a new tab) and app permissions on Android (external site, opens in a new tab).
Did it work? Your photos and videos appear when you create a story.
Did Fix 5 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 5. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Fix 6: Story won’t share? Check the steps, then the app
First make sure you’re following Meta’s steps; then rule out the app and connection. The troubleshooting steps here are general advice.
iPhone & iPad
- Tap Create Story at the top of your Feed, pick a story type (such as Text or Music) or a photo or video, then tap Share (Meta’s steps).
- Update Facebook from the App Store.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data, and try a smaller photo or a shorter video.
- Close and reopen Facebook. If it still fails, see clear Facebook’s cache.
Android
- Tap Create Story at the top of your Feed, pick a story type (such as Text or Music) or a photo or video, then tap Share (Meta’s steps).
- Update Facebook from Google Play.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular (mobile) data, and try a smaller photo or a shorter video.
- Clear the Facebook app’s cache: see clear Facebook’s cache.
Computer (browser)
- Click Create a Story at the top of your Feed > Create a photo story, choose a photo or video, then click Share to Story (Meta’s steps).
- Reload the page, or try another browser or a private window.
- Clear Facebook’s data in your browser: see clear Facebook’s cache.
On Facebook Lite, Meta’s steps are the same idea: Create story > choose a type or photo > Privacy to set the audience > Back > Share Now. If posting is blocked everywhere, not just in stories, check Profile status for a restriction.
Did it work? Your story shares and you can see it in Stories.
Did Fix 6 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 6. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Fix 7: Posting to a Page’s story? Switch into the Page first
Meta says a Page story shares something with the Page’s followers for 24 hours. You need Facebook access to the Page (external site, opens in a new tab), and you post it after switching into the Page, not from your personal profile.
iPhone & iPad
- Tap Menu (top left) or your profile picture, then Options, and select the Page to switch into it.
- Tap Create at the bottom of the screen, then Story.
- Choose a photo or video from your camera roll, or tap Camera.
- Add Stickers, text (Aa), Draw or Effects if you want. To change story settings, tap Settings, then Save.
- Tap Done, then Share.
Android
- Tap Menu (top left), then Options, and select the Page to switch into it.
- Tap Create at the top of the screen, then Story.
- Choose a photo or video from your camera roll, or tap Camera.
- Add Stickers, text (Aa), Draw or Effects if you want. To change story settings, tap Settings, then Save.
- Tap Done, then Share.
Computer (browser)
- Click your profile photo (top right) > See all profiles, and select the Page.
- From the Page’s Feed, click Create story at the top, then Create a photo story, and choose a photo.
- Edit it if you want: Add text, Add button (to view a shop or visit a linked site), drag to reposition, - / + to resize, or Rotate.
- Click Share to story.
In a mobile browser or Facebook Lite, Meta says to use the Facebook app for iPhone or Android instead. People with Facebook and task access to a Page can also create Page stories in Meta Business Suite (on a computer (external site, opens in a new tab) or in the mobile app (external site, opens in a new tab)).
Did it work? The story appears on the Page, shared as the Page.
Did Fix 7 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 7. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
How to know it worked

Frequently asked questions
How long does a Facebook story last?
Meta says a story is visible for 24 hours. If your story archive is turned on, it’s saved there automatically when it disappears.
Who can see my Facebook story?
The audience you choose for that story, such as Public or Friends. Meta says that audience can see it on both Facebook and Messenger.
Why can’t I add photos to my Facebook story?
Facebook needs access to your phone’s camera roll. Allow it in your phone’s settings; if you only allowed selected photos, add the ones you want.
Why did my Facebook story disappear?
Stories are designed to last 24 hours. If your story archive is on, you’ll find it there; if you deleted it before it expired, Meta says it isn’t saved.
Why do some Facebook story viewers show as “others”?
Meta says some people in your audience who preview your story may show up as others, rather than by name.
Can other people see who viewed my story?
No. Meta says only you can see who viewed your story.
How do I post a story on my Facebook Page?
Switch into the Page first. In the app: Menu (or your profile picture on iPhone) > Options > select the Page > Create > Story. Create is at the top of the screen on Android and at the bottom on iPhone. On a computer: profile photo > See all profiles > select the Page > Create story. Meta says a Page story is visible to the Page’s followers for 24 hours.
Does my Facebook story show on Messenger?
Yes. Meta says your story’s audience can see it across both Facebook and Messenger.
