Can’t Upload Photos to Facebook? Size Limits, Formats and Fixes

When a photo won’t upload, the cause is usually the photo itself, the connection or the app, and occasionally a temporary block on your account. Meta’s own troubleshooting covers each one: keep photos under 15 MB, use a common format, try the original rather than an edited copy, and check your Support Inbox. Here’s everything in order, for phones and computers.

Quick answer

Meta recommends photos under 15 MB, in JPEG, BMP, PNG, GIF or TIFF format (PNGs best under 1 MB). Try uploading the original photo rather than an edited copy, make sure your Wi-Fi or data connection is strong, and update and restart the Facebook app (or update your browser). On a computer, turn off ad blockers for Facebook. If nothing works, check your Support Inbox: Meta says that if you were warned for posting abusive content, you may be temporarily blocked from uploading photos. Then report the problem to Facebook.

Does this match what you see?

  • The photo starts uploading, then fails or spins forever.
  • You can post text, but adding a photo doesn’t work.
  • One particular photo won’t upload, but others do.
  • An edited photo fails, but the original works.
  • A message says you’re temporarily blocked from uploading.
  • A PNG looks pixelated after uploading.

Most tips come from Meta’s troubleshooting page for each device; a few general tips are our own. The Adobe Flash warning comes from Adobe.

  • The photo is too large, edited, or an unusual formatCheck this first

Meta recommends photos under 15 MB, in JPEG, BMP, PNG, GIF or TIFF, and suggests trying the original photo, because editing a photo before uploading may cause the upload to fail.

  • A weak connection or an outdated appCheck this first

Meta’s first tips on phones are a strong Wi-Fi or network connection and the latest version of the Facebook app.

  • An ad blocker or outdated browser (computers)Possible

Meta suggests turning off ad-blocking software, or adding Facebook as an exception, and keeping your browser up to date.

  • A temporary block on your accountLess likely

Meta says that if you were warned for posting abusive content, you may be temporarily blocked from uploading photos.

Try these 60-second checks first

  • Is the photo under 15 MB? Meta recommends that limit.
  • Try the original photo, not an edited copy.
  • Switch to a strong Wi-Fi network and try again.
  • Update the Facebook app, then close and reopen it.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Check you’re using Meta’s steps to add a photo

Safe & reversible2 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

It’s worth ruling out the basics first. These are Meta’s own steps for sharing photos in a post.

iPhone & iPad

  1. At the top of your Feed, tap Photo.
  2. Select photos from your camera roll, then tap Next (on an iPad, Done).
  3. Add a layout, album, people, feeling or location if you want, then tap Post.

Android

  1. At the top of your Feed, tap Photo.
  2. Select photos from your camera roll, then tap Next.
  3. Add a layout, album, people, feeling or location if you want, then tap Post.

Computer (browser)

  1. At the top of your Feed, click Photo/video.
  2. Select the photos you want to share.
  3. Choose your audience, then click Post.

In Facebook Lite, tap Photo, then Camera or pick from your camera roll, then Next and Post. In a mobile browser, tap Photo, then Photos or Albums.

Did it work? Your photo appears in the post preview before you tap Post.

Fix 2: Check the photo’s size and format, and try the original

Safe & reversible3 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta’s advice for photos: keep them under 15 MB, use a common format, and upload the original if an edited version fails.

  1. Check the file size. Meta recommends uploading photos under 15 MB.
  2. Use a common format: in its tips for computers, Meta recommends JPEG, BMP, PNG, GIF or TIFF.
  3. For PNG files, Meta’s computer tips say it’s best to stay under 1 MB: larger PNGs may appear pixelated. Saving the photo as a JPEG instead is a common workaround.
  4. Try the original photo. Meta says editing a photo before uploading (for example in a photo editor) may cause the upload to fail.

Trying to post a 3D photo? Meta says that if you edited a photo taken in Portrait Mode, Lens Blur or Live Focus, you might not be able to post it in 3D, and the 3D option won’t appear if you add more than one photo to the post.

Did it work? The photo uploads, or you’ve found which file is the problem.

Fix 3: On a phone: check the connection, then update and restart

Safe & reversible5 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

Meta’s mobile tips start with a strong connection and the latest app, then a restart of the app and the phone.

iPhone & iPad

  1. Make sure you have a strong Wi-Fi or cellular connection.
  2. Update Facebook from the App Store, then close and reopen it.
  3. Update your iPhone’s software, then restart the phone (Meta’s suggestion).
  4. Try the upload again.

Android

  1. Make sure you have a strong Wi-Fi or mobile connection.
  2. Update Facebook from Google Play, then close and reopen it.
  3. Update your phone’s software and restart it.
  4. Try the upload again. Still failing? Clear Facebook’s cache.

Using Facebook Lite or a mobile browser? Meta gives the same core tips: a strong connection, the original photo, and photos under 15 MB. Photo looks blurry after posting? Meta says photos are optimized for the best quality, including HD, but quality depends on your network: for the best result, upload on Wi-Fi or with a strong cell signal. Photos look blurry when you view them? See photos not loading.

Did it work? The photo uploads in the app.

Fix 4: Can’t see your photos? Allow Facebook to access them

Safe & reversible3 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

Meta says you can only share photos from your device if you’ve given Facebook access to your camera roll. On iPhone you can allow all photos or selected ones; on Android 14 or later too, while earlier Android versions only allow all.

  1. Allow Facebook to access your photos in your phone’s settings. On Android, Google’s path is Settings > Apps > See all apps > Facebook > Permissions > Photos and videos.
  2. If you only allowed selected photos, check the one you want is included.
  3. Full steps for both phones are in Facebook stories not working.

Did it work? Your photos appear when you go to add one.

Fix 5: On a computer: ad blockers and your browser

Safe & reversible5 minComputer (browser)

Meta’s computer tips are to manage ad-blocking software and keep your browser up to date.

Computer (browser)

  1. If you use an ad blocker, turn it off for Facebook, or add Facebook as an exception (Meta’s tip).
  2. Update your browser to the latest version.
  3. Try the upload again, or try a different browser.
  4. Don’t download Adobe Flash, even though Meta’s help page still mentions it: see the warning at the top of this page.

Still stuck? Clearing Facebook’s data in your browser can help: see clear Facebook’s cache.

Did it work? The photo uploads in your browser.

Fix 6: Told you’re blocked? Check your Support Inbox

Safe & reversible3 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says that if you’ve been warned for posting abusive content, you may be temporarily blocked from uploading photos.

  1. Open your Support Inbox (facebook.com/settings?tab=support (external site, opens in a new tab)) and look for a warning or block.
  2. Check Profile status for a restriction and its end date (where to find it).
  3. Wait for the block to end. Retrying again and again is unlikely to help.
  4. If you think the decision was wrong, request a review where it’s offered: see Facebook removed your post.

Meta has a page on being blocked from using a feature (external site, opens in a new tab). For how restrictions grow with strikes, see Facebook jail.

Did it work? You know whether a block is stopping uploads, and when it ends.

Fix 7: Still can’t upload? Report it to Facebook

Safe & reversible3 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta’s last step for every device is to report the problem if none of the tips work.

  1. Report it from inside Facebook. On a computer: your profile picture (top right) > Help & support > Report a problem.
  2. Describe what happens, which device and app version you use, and the photo’s size and format.

Meta’s page on reporting a problem (external site, opens in a new tab) has the steps for every device.

Did it work? Your report is sent.

How to know it worked

  • Your photo uploads and appears in the post.
  • Photos upload normally in both the app and the browser.
  • Your Support Inbox shows no active block.

Still not working? Your next steps

  1. Photos you view won’t load, rather than upload? See Facebook photos not loading.
  2. Videos won’t upload either? See can’t upload Reels.
  3. Posting is blocked everywhere? See Facebook jail.
