Quick answer
Update Facebook Lite in Google Play, then force stop it and open it again. If it still fails, clear its cache: Settings > Apps > Facebook Lite > Storage & cache > Clear cache. Don’t use Clear storage, which signs you out. Make sure your phone has free space and that Data Saver isn’t blocking Lite. Can’t log in, or stuck at a code? Try the same login on facebook.com in your browser. If that fails too, the problem is your account, not the app.
Does this match what you see?
- Facebook Lite won’t open, or opens and closes straight away.
- Android says “Facebook Lite keeps stopping” or “Facebook Lite isn’t responding”.
- The feed or photos won’t load, or you see “No internet connection” while other apps work.
- Login fails, or the login code never arrives.
- Lite worked yesterday and stopped after a phone or app update.
Android
Facebook Lite is listed on Google Play for Android phones. Menu names vary by phone maker (Samsung, Tecno, Infinix, Xiaomi and others): look for the closest match.
Why this happens: the possible causes
Match what you see to the likely cause.
| What you see | Likely cause | Do this first |
|---|---|---|
| Won’t open, or “keeps stopping” | A glitch, an old version or damaged temporary files | Fix 1 then Fix 3 |
| Opens but nothing loads | Weak or blocked connection, or Data Saver | Fix 4 |
| Slow, freezing, or photos won’t save | Phone storage almost full | Fix 5 |
| Can’t log in or no code | Usually an account or code problem, not the app | Fix 6 |
| Broke after an update | Old app version or a bug in the new one | Fix 2 |
- A stuck app or an old versionCheck this first
Google’s own steps for a misbehaving Android app start with restarting, updating and force stopping, because they fix most glitches.
- Damaged temporary filesCheck this first
Clearing the cache removes temporary data that can make an app freeze or crash. Google notes that clearing storage is different: it permanently deletes the app’s data.
- Not enough free storagePossible
Google’s Android help notes that problems can start when less than 10% of storage is free. Phones that run Lite often have little storage to spare.
- Data Saver or a blocked connectionPossible
Data-saving modes can stop Lite using mobile data in the background. Some networks and VPNs block or slow social media.
- An account or login issuePossible
If you can’t log in on facebook.com either, the app isn’t the problem. Fix the login instead.
Try these 60-second checks first
- Restart your phone.
- Open Google Play and check for a Facebook Lite update.
- Check you have free storage space (Settings > Storage).
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and check your data bundle hasn’t run out.
- Try facebook.com in your browser. If it works there, the problem is the Lite app.
How to fix it, step by step
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.
Fix 1: Force stop Facebook Lite and restart your phone
A forced stop clears a stuck app from memory. Google’s steps for an app that isn’t working include it.
Android
- Open Settings > Apps (on some phones Apps & notifications or Application manager).
- Tap See all apps if shown, then Facebook Lite.
- Tap Force stop and confirm.
- Restart the phone: hold the power button (on some phones power and volume up) and choose Restart.
- Open Facebook Lite again.
Did it work? Facebook Lite opens and stays open.
Fix 2: Update Facebook Lite (and your phone)
Old versions can stop working as Facebook changes. Updating keeps your data.
Android
- Open Google Play and tap your profile icon.
- Tap Manage apps & device, then Updates available.
- Update Facebook Lite if it’s listed. Make sure it’s the one by Meta Platforms, Inc.
- Check for a phone software update too: Settings > System > System update (some phones say Software update).
Only install Facebook Lite from Google Play. Copies from other websites can be fake or out of date.
Did it work? Facebook Lite opens normally after the update.
Fix 3: Clear Facebook Lite’s cache (keeps you signed in)
Clearing the cache removes temporary files that can make the app freeze or crash. It doesn’t delete your Facebook account, posts or photos.
Android
- Open Settings > Apps > Facebook Lite.
- Tap Storage & cache (on some phones just Storage).
- Tap Clear cache.
- Don’t tap Clear storage or Clear data yet. Google notes this permanently deletes the app’s data, so you’ll be signed out.
- Open Facebook Lite again.
Did it work? The app opens and loads posts without freezing.
Fix 4: Fix the connection: Data Saver, VPN and network
Meta says Lite works even on 2G, but it still needs a working connection that isn’t blocked. Data Saver can stop apps using mobile data in the background.
Android
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data from the quick settings panel.
- Check your data bundle or airtime hasn’t run out, and that Mobile data is on.
- If Data Saver is on, allow Facebook Lite unrestricted data. On many phones: Settings > Network & internet > Data Saver > Unrestricted data > Facebook Lite. Google notes this option on Android 7 and later.
- Turn off any VPN briefly to test.
- Make sure the date and time are set automatically in Settings > System > Date & time.
Did it work? The feed and photos load on the network you’re using.
Fix 5: Free up storage space
Google’s Android help notes that your phone can have problems when less than 10% of storage is free.
Android
- Open Settings > Storage to see how much space is free.
- Remove apps you don’t use, and large videos or files you’ve already backed up.
- Clear old WhatsApp and Telegram media if they take a lot of space (from inside those apps).
- Restart the phone and open Facebook Lite again.
Did it work? Your phone has comfortable free space and Lite runs smoothly.
Fix 6: Can’t log in, or no code arrives
Login problems are usually about the account or the code, not the Lite app. Testing on facebook.com tells you which.
Android
- Open facebook.com in your phone’s browser and try to log in there.
- If the browser login fails too, follow Can’t log in to Facebook.
- If a code doesn’t arrive, follow Facebook login code not received. Meta’s two-factor troubleshooting page notes that some of its steps aren’t available in Facebook Lite. If you get stuck, try the main Facebook app or facebook.com.
- If Facebook says your account is locked, see Facebook account locked.
Did it work? You can log in on facebook.com and then in Facebook Lite.
Fix 7: Reinstall Facebook Lite (signs you out)
A clean install replaces a damaged app. It signs you out, so make sure you can log back in first.
Android
- Check you know your password and can receive your login code.
- Uninstall Facebook Lite: touch and hold its icon > Uninstall (or App info > Uninstall).
- Reinstall Facebook Lite by Meta Platforms, Inc. from Google Play and log in.
Did it work? Facebook Lite opens, logs in and loads normally.
Facebook Lite or the main Facebook app?
If Lite keeps failing, it helps to know what each one is for.
| Facebook Lite | Main Facebook app | |
|---|---|---|
| Made by | Meta Platforms, Inc. | Meta Platforms, Inc. |
| Best for | Phones with little storage and slow or expensive data. Meta says it works on 2G. | Phones with more storage and steady connections |
| Where to get it | Google Play (Android) | Google Play and the App Store |
Meta’s listing also says Messenger chats open inside Facebook Lite. You can install both apps and log in to the same account. If one fails, the other, or facebook.com in your browser, keeps you connected while you fix it.

Frequently asked questions
Why does Facebook Lite keep stopping?
Usually a glitch, an old version, damaged temporary files or a full phone. Force stop it, update it from Google Play, clear its cache and free up storage, in that order.
Will clearing Facebook Lite’s cache delete my account or photos?
No. Clearing the cache removes temporary files only. Clear storage (or Clear data) is different: it deletes the app’s data on your phone and signs you out, but your Facebook account and posts are safe.
Why does Facebook Lite say “No internet connection” when my data is on?
Check your data bundle, Data Saver (allow Lite unrestricted data), any VPN, and that the date and time are set automatically.
Is Facebook Lite available on iPhone?
We found Facebook Lite listed on Google Play for Android. On iPhone, use the main Facebook app or facebook.com in Safari.
Can I use Facebook Lite and the main Facebook app at the same time?
Yes. You can install both and log in to the same account, which is handy if one stops working.
