Quick answer
Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data and turn off any VPN. On Android, allow Facebook unrestricted data if Data Saver is on. On iPhone, turn off Low Data Mode to test. Then update Facebook and clear its cache (on iPhone, offload and reinstall the app for a fresh copy). On a computer, open facebook.com in a private window. If photos load there, an extension or stored browser data is blocking them. If one photo says “This content isn’t available”, the problem is that photo, not your phone.
Does this match what you see?
- Posts appear, but photos are grey boxes, blank spaces or endless spinners.
- Profile pictures and cover photos don’t show.
- Photos look blurry or low quality, especially on mobile data.
- Tapping a photo opens a black screen, or the photo never sharpens.
- A photo or post says “This content isn’t available right now”.
- Photos load in the app but not on facebook.com, or the other way round.
iPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)
The Facebook app on iPhone and Android uses the same screens and labels. Phone setting names vary by model and software version.
Why this happens: the possible causes
Use what you see to find the cause.
| What you see | What it usually means | Do this first |
|---|---|---|
| Grey boxes or blank images everywhere | Slow, limited or filtered connection | Fix 1 |
| Blurry or low-quality photos | Data-saving settings or a slow connection | Fix 4 |
| Images missing only on facebook.com | A browser extension or stored browser data | Fix 5 |
| Started after an update, or the app freezes | Old version or damaged temporary files | Fix 2 and Fix 3 |
| One photo says “This content isn’t available” | The photo was removed, or you no longer have permission to see it | What that means |
- The connection is too slow or limited for imagesCheck this first
Text arrives first and images need more data. On a weak signal, an exhausted data plan or with a data-saving mode on, photos are the first thing to fail.
- Damaged temporary filesPossible
The app and the browser store images to load them faster. If those files are damaged, photos may show blank or never finish loading.
- A browser extension blocking imagesPossible
Ad blockers, privacy tools and some antivirus add-ons can block the servers Facebook uses for images.
- Not enough free storagePossible
Google’s Android help notes that problems can start when less than 10% of a phone’s storage is free.
- The photo itself is gone or privateLess likely
If one photo won’t load but others do, it may have been deleted, removed, or its audience changed so you can’t see it.
Try these 60-second checks first
- Open another app or website with pictures. If those fail too, it’s your connection.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Check your data bundle hasn’t run out.
- Try the same post on another device, or on facebook.com.
How to fix it, step by step
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.
Fix 1: Fix the connection: data saving, VPN and network
Images need much more data than text. Data-saving modes and VPNs can stop them loading while the rest of Facebook seems fine.
iPhone & iPad
- Switch Wi-Fi off and on in Control Center, or try mobile data instead.
- Check Facebook is allowed to use mobile data: Settings > Mobile Data (or Cellular) > Facebook on.
- Turn off Low Data Mode and any VPN briefly to test.
Android
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data from the quick settings panel.
- If Data Saver is on, allow Facebook unrestricted data (on many phones: Settings > Network & internet > Data Saver > Unrestricted data > Facebook). Google notes this option on Android 7 and later.
- Turn off any VPN briefly to test.
Computer (browser)
- Try another network, such as a phone hotspot, to rule out a router or an office or school filter.
- Turn off any VPN or proxy briefly.
Did it work? Photos load in your feed on the network you changed to.
Fix 2: Update Facebook, then close and reopen it
Old app versions can have trouble displaying images after Facebook changes. Updating keeps your data.
iPhone & iPad
- App Store > your profile icon > App Updates > Update next to Facebook.
- Swipe up from the bottom, pause, swipe Facebook away and open it again.
Android
- Google Play > your profile icon > Manage apps & device > Updates available > update Facebook.
- Close Facebook from your recent apps and open it again.
Did it work? Photos load after reopening the app.
Fix 3: Clear the app’s temporary files (or reinstall a fresh copy) and free up space
Damaged image files can stay blank until they are cleared. A nearly full phone also struggles to store new images.
iPhone & iPad
- Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Facebook > Offload App, then Reinstall App. Apple says offloading keeps the app’s documents and data.
- On the same screen, check how much free space your iPhone has.
Android
- Settings > Apps > Facebook > Storage & cache > Clear cache.
- Don’t tap Clear storage: Google notes this permanently deletes the app’s data, so you’ll be signed out.
- Check Settings > Storage and free some space if your phone is nearly full.
Did it work? Photos load instead of showing grey boxes.
Fix 4: Blurry photos? Give Facebook a better connection
On a slow connection or with data saving on, Facebook may show a lower-quality version of a photo first. It sharpens when there’s enough bandwidth.
- Wait a few seconds on the photo. It often sharpens once it has fully loaded.
- Move to Wi-Fi or a stronger signal and reopen the photo.
- Turn off your phone’s data-saving mode (Data Saver on Android, Low Data Mode on iPhone) while you test.
- If Facebook’s own settings include a media, photo or video quality option, check it isn’t set to save data. Its name and location vary between versions.
Did it work? Photos look sharp on a good connection.
Fix 5: Photos missing only on facebook.com
If the app shows photos but the website doesn’t, your browser is blocking or mishandling them. Extensions and stored data are the usual causes.
Computer (browser)
- Reload the page with a hard refresh in Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + R on Windows, or Cmd + Shift + R on a Mac.
- Open facebook.com in a private or incognito window. If photos load there, an extension or stored data is the cause.
- Turn off extensions one at a time, especially ad blockers and privacy tools, and reload.
- Chrome: More (top right) > Delete browsing data > tick Cached images and files > Delete data. Clearing cookies as well can fix stubborn problems, but signs you out of websites.
- Safari on iPhone: Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced > Website Data > Remove All Website Data.
- Make sure your browser is up to date, or try a different one.
Did it work? Photos load in your normal browser window.
“This content isn’t available right now”
If this message appears on one photo or post while others load fine, nothing is wrong with your phone. It usually means one of these:
- The person who shared it deleted it, or changed who can see it so it no longer includes you.
- Facebook removed it for going against its rules.
- The person blocked you or deactivated their account.
- The link you followed is old or incomplete.
You can’t fix any of these from your side. If it’s your own photo that was removed, check Profile status (profile photo > ⋯ > Profile Settings > More options > Profile status) under Content removed, and see Facebook jail: restricted account if you want to ask for a review.
Can’t upload a photo?
- Check the connection first (Fix 1). Uploads need a steadier connection than viewing.
- Make sure Facebook can access your photos: on iPhone, Settings > Facebook > Photos; on Android, Settings > Apps > Facebook > Permissions > Photos and videos (names vary).
- Try a different photo. If only one fails, it may be damaged, very large or in an unusual format. Taking a screenshot of it and uploading that is a quick test.
- Update the app (Fix 2) and try again.
- If posting fails with “Something went wrong”, see Something went wrong.

Frequently asked questions
Why are my Facebook photos showing as grey boxes?
Usually the connection is too slow or limited for images. Switch networks, turn off data saving and VPNs, then update the app and clear its cache.
Why are Facebook photos blurry?
On a slow connection or with data saving on, Facebook may show a lower-quality version first. Give it a moment on a good connection, and turn off data-saving modes while you test.
Why do photos load on my phone but not on my computer?
A browser extension or stored browser data is the usual cause. Try a private window, then turn off extensions and clear cached images.
What does “This content isn’t available right now” mean?
That photo or post was deleted, removed, or isn’t shared with you any more. Nothing is wrong with your phone.
Will clearing the cache delete my photos?
No. Clearing the cache removes temporary copies only. Your photos stay on your Facebook account. On Android, avoid Clear storage, which signs you out.
