Facebook Not Working Right Now? Find Out Why and Fix It

Facebook problems feel random, but almost every one falls into a handful of patterns: an outage, a connection or device issue, a broken app install, or something on your account. This guide helps you work out which one you have in about a minute, then sends you to the exact fix.

Quick answer

First find out whether it’s just you: try Facebook on a different device and a different network (switch Wi-Fi off and use mobile data). If it fails everywhere and friends report the same thing, it’s probably a wider outage — wait it out. If it only fails on one device, update the app, restart the phone, and clear the app’s cache (Fixes 2–4 below). If Facebook works but shows a notice about your account (locked, suspended, restricted), app fixes won’t help — use the account guides instead.

Pick your problem

Common Facebook problems this guide covers

  • Facebook won’t load at all, or keeps showing an error instead of your feed.
  • The app keeps closing or freezing (the crash guide goes deeper on this).
  • You see a message such as “Something went wrong” or “Facebook will be back soon” (wording varies).
  • Pictures and videos won’t load, or uploads fail (see photos not loading and videos not playing).
  • Facebook works on your phone but not your computer (or the other way round).
  • One feature is missing or broken — Marketplace, Dating, Messenger or notifications.
  • You’re logged out, locked out, or see a notice about your account.

iPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Steps cover the Facebook app on iPhone and Android and facebook.com in a browser. Menu names change between app versions and can differ by phone maker, country and account.

Is Facebook down, or is it just you? The 60-second test

Before changing any settings, spend one minute finding out whether the problem is Facebook’s or yours. This one test decides everything that follows.

  1. Try a second device. Open Facebook on another phone, tablet or computer — ideally one that isn’t signed in to your account, or facebook.com in a private browser window.
  2. Try a second network. On your phone, turn Wi-Fi off and use mobile data (or connect to a different Wi-Fi). If Facebook works on one network but not the other, the problem is that network, not Facebook.
  3. Check whether others are affected. Ask family or friends, look at a news site, or use an outage-report website. Outage-report sites show how many people are reporting problems, which is a useful signal but not official confirmation.
  4. Check the time. If it started suddenly for lots of people at the same moment, it’s most likely an outage. If it started after an app update or a phone change, it’s more likely on your side.

  • A Facebook outagePossible

Sometimes Facebook, or one part of it such as Messenger or image loading, goes down for many people at once. Nothing you change on your phone will fix an outage; it usually resolves on its own.

  • Your internet connectionCheck this first

Weak Wi-Fi, a router that needs a restart, mobile data turned off for Facebook, or a data-saving mode can all make Facebook load partly or not at all — while simpler websites still seem to work.

  • An outdated app or phone softwareCheck this first

Facebook updates its app frequently, and each version needs a minimum iOS or Android version. Old versions can lose features, fail to load content or crash.

  • Corrupted temporary files (cache)Check this first

The app and your browser store temporary files to load faster. If those get damaged, you can see blank screens, endless loading or repeated errors.

  • Low storage or a struggling phonePossible

Google notes that Android phones can start having problems when less than 10% of storage is free. A phone that’s been on for weeks can also benefit from a restart.

  • Browser extensions or settingsPossible

On a computer, ad blockers, privacy extensions, outdated browsers or strict cookie settings can break parts of facebook.com.

  • Something on your accountPossible

If Facebook loads but you’re logged out, locked out, asked to confirm your identity, or a feature is restricted, the cause is your account rather than the app. These need Facebook’s own account tools.

Works on your phone but not your computer (or the reverse)?

This is one of the most useful clues you can have, because it rules out an outage and rules out most account problems. The broken side has a local problem.

Phone vs computer
SituationLikely causeWhat to try
App broken, browser finePossibly a damaged or outdated app install, app cache or app permissionsUpdate, clear cache, then reinstall
Browser broken, app finePossibly browser cache or cookies, an extension, or an outdated browserFix 6
Login works on phone but not computerPossibly a security check on the new device, or blocked cookiesCan’t log in

If you’re stuck, you can usually keep using whichever side works while you fix the other. Your posts, messages and Marketplace listings are the same in both.

Try these 60-second checks first

  • Open Facebook on a different device (or facebook.com in a browser). Does it work there?
  • Switch networks: turn Wi-Fi off and try mobile data, or the other way round.
  • Ask someone nearby, or check a news site, whether Facebook is down for them too.
  • Fully close the Facebook app and reopen it.
  • Check that your phone has free storage and isn’t in a low-power or data-saving mode.

The universal fix ladder (in the right order)

If the 60-second test shows the problem is on your side, work down this ladder and stop as soon as Facebook works. Fixes 1–5 are safe and keep you signed in; Fix 6 signs you out of Facebook in that browser, and Fix 7 signs you out of the app. For crashes and freezes, the App keeps crashing guide has fuller device-specific steps.

Fix 1: Check your connection, network and date settings

Safe & reversible2 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Facebook loads a lot of images and video, so a weak or filtered connection often breaks it before other apps. Data-saving settings, VPNs and networks that block social media (some schools, workplaces and public Wi-Fi) can also stop it loading.

iPhone & iPad

  1. Switch Wi-Fi off and on in Control Center, or try mobile data instead.
  2. Check Facebook is allowed to use mobile data: Settings > Mobile Data (or Cellular) and make sure Facebook is switched on.
  3. If you use Low Data Mode or a VPN, turn it off briefly to test.
  4. Make sure the date and time are set automatically (Settings > General > Date & Time) — a wrong clock can make secure websites and apps fail to connect.

Android

  1. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data from the quick settings panel.
  2. If Data Saver is on, either turn it off or allow Facebook unrestricted data. On Pixel phones: Settings > Network & internet > Data Saver > Unrestricted data > turn on Facebook. Other phones use similar names.
  3. Turn off any VPN briefly to test.
  4. Check the date and time are set automatically in Settings (often under System > Date & time; names vary).

Computer (browser)

  1. Open another website to confirm your internet is working.
  2. Try a different network, such as a phone hotspot, to rule out a router or a workplace/school filter.
  3. Turn off any VPN or proxy briefly to test, and check your computer’s clock is set automatically.

Did it work? Your feed refreshes and images load normally on the network you changed.

Fix 2: Update the Facebook app (and your phone’s software)

Safe & reversible3 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

Old app versions can break as Facebook changes. Updating is a safe first fix that keeps all your data.

iPhone & iPad

  1. Open the App Store, tap your profile icon, scroll to App Updates and tap Update next to Facebook if it’s listed.
  2. If there’s no Facebook update, check Settings > General > Software Update. Meta’s App Store listing shows the minimum iOS version the current app needs.

Android

  1. Open Google Play, tap your profile icon > Manage apps & device, and update Facebook under Updates available.
  2. Check for a phone update: on many phones Settings > System > System update (some phones use Software update).

Did it work? Facebook opens normally after the update and the problem doesn’t come back.

Fix 3: Close Facebook completely and restart your phone

Safe & reversible2 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

Restarting clears temporary glitches in the app and the phone’s memory. Apple’s and Google’s own troubleshooting steps for misbehaving apps both include it.

iPhone & iPad

  1. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause, then swipe the Facebook preview up to close it.
  2. Restart the iPhone (on iPhone X and later: hold a volume button and the side button, drag the slider, wait 30 seconds, then hold the side button), and open Facebook again.

Android

  1. Force stop Facebook from its page in Settings > Apps (names vary by phone maker).
  2. Restart the phone (hold the power button — on some phones power and volume up — and choose Restart), then open Facebook again.

Did it work? The error you saw doesn’t reappear when you open the same screen.

Fix 4: Clear Facebook’s cache (temporary files)

Safe & reversible3 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

Damaged temporary files can cause blank areas, endless spinners and repeated errors. Clearing the cache removes only temporary data; it doesn’t delete your account.

iPhone & iPad

  1. iPhone has no “clear cache” button for Facebook. The equivalent is offloading: Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Facebook > Offload App, then Reinstall App. Apple says offloading keeps the app’s documents and data.

Android

  1. On Facebook’s page in Settings > Apps, tap Storage & cache > Clear cache. Leave Clear storage alone — that signs you out and resets the app.

Need more detail, or does the app close by itself? The App keeps crashing guide has the full device-by-device steps, including phones where Facebook came pre-installed.

Did it work? Pages load fully instead of showing blank areas or spinners.

Fix 5: Free up space on your phone

Safe & reversible10 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

Apps misbehave when the phone is almost full. Google’s Android help notes problems can start when less than 10% of storage is free.

iPhone & iPad

  1. Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage to see how much space is left.
  2. Delete or offload apps you don’t use, and remove large videos you’ve backed up, then try Facebook again.

Android

  1. Open Settings > Storage to see how much is free (names vary).
  2. Remove unused apps and large downloaded files you no longer need, then try Facebook again.

Did it work? Your phone has comfortable free space and Facebook loads normally.

Fix 6: Fix facebook.com in your browser

May sign you out5 minComputer (browser)

When Facebook fails only on a computer, the browser is the usual suspect: stale cached files, damaged cookies, an extension blocking scripts, or an outdated browser.

Computer (browser)

  1. Reload the page with a hard refresh: Ctrl + Shift + R on Windows, or Cmd + Shift + R on a Mac.
  2. Open facebook.com in a private or incognito window. If it works there, an extension or stored data is the cause.
  3. Turn off extensions one at a time (especially ad blockers and privacy tools) and reload.
  4. Clear cookies and cached files for facebook.com in your browser’s privacy settings. This signs you out of Facebook in that browser.
  5. Update your browser, or try a different one (Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari).

Did it work? facebook.com loads normally in your usual browser window.

Fix 7: Reinstall the Facebook app (signs you out)

May sign you out5 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

A clean install replaces a damaged app. It signs you out, so check you can log back in first — if you use two-factor authentication, make sure you can get your codes.

iPhone & iPad

  1. Make sure you know your password and can receive your login code.
  2. Touch and hold the Facebook icon > Remove App > Delete App (Apple warns you may lose data stored only in the app), then reinstall from the App Store and sign in.

Android

  1. Make sure you know your password and can receive your login code.
  2. Uninstall Facebook and reinstall it from Google Play. If there’s no Uninstall option, Facebook came pre-installed — see the steps in App keeps crashing.

Uninstalling the app doesn’t delete your Facebook account. Most content is stored online, but end-to-end encrypted Messenger chat history may need your Messenger PIN or backup to restore after reinstalling — check this before you remove the app (see Meta’s help).

Did it work? The fresh install opens without the problem. If it still fails, the issue is likely your account, your network or a wider outage.

Fix 8: Report the problem to Facebook and use a fallback

Safe & reversible5 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

If nothing above works and there’s no outage, the bug may be in Facebook itself. Reporting it gives Meta the details, and a fallback keeps you going meanwhile.

iPhone & iPad

  1. Tap ☰ Menu (top left of the Home screen), tap Help and support to open it, then tap Report a problem. Or, quicker: go to the screen where the problem happens and shake your phone. Either way, a sheet opens headed “Go back to where you saw an issue and shake your phone”.
  2. Tap Continue to report a problem. Facebook says reports about abuse or spam shouldn’t be sent here: use the Report option on the post, profile or message instead.
  3. Choose Include or Don’t include for complete logs and diagnostics. Basic details about your device, account and the app are added either way; the full logs (activity, network and crash logs) help Meta trace a bug.
  4. On Select product, pick the part of Facebook that’s broken, such as Marketplace, Notifications, Feed, Messages or Video.
  5. On Send report, describe the issue: what you tapped, what you expected and what happened. Add proof with Record screen or Upload From Phone, then tap the send arrow at the top right.
  6. Never include your password or login codes in a report. If you were logged in, the report later appears in Download Your Information.
  7. Tip: the same sheet has two switches, Shake phone to report a problem and Show button to report a problem. The second puts a small, draggable report button on some screens. Turn shaking off if it opens the sheet by accident.
  8. Meanwhile, use facebook.com in your phone’s browser, or on a computer.

Android

  1. Tap ☰ Menu (top right of the Home screen), tap Help and support to open it, then tap Report a problem.

Computer (browser)

  1. Log in, click your profile picture (top right) > Help and support > Report a problem, then follow the on-screen instructions. Meta says adding a screenshot and a description helps it find the problem.
  2. Describe what happened and when. Never include your password or login codes in a report.

Did it work? You can reach your feed and messages through the fallback while you wait for an app update.

Facebook error messages A–Z (wording as commonly reported)

These are the messages as people report seeing them. The exact wording on your screen can differ by app version, language and region, so match the meaning, not every word.

Couldn’t send (Messenger)
What it usually means
Usually a connection problem, a temporary Messenger issue, or a limit on who you can message.
Facebook will be back soon
What it usually means
Meta has a help page about this message; it generally indicates a problem on Facebook’s side rather than your device.
What to do
Wait and try again later. Run the 60-second test to confirm it isn’t your connection.
Location Mismatch (Facebook Dating)
What it usually means
A Dating notice that, as its name suggests, relates to your location not matching what Dating expects.
Marketplace isn’t available to you
What it usually means
Facebook has decided this account can’t use Marketplace right now.
Session expired
What it usually means
Facebook has signed you out, often after a password change, a security check, or cleared cookies.
What to do
Log in again. If it keeps happening, see Can’t log in.
Something went wrong / Sorry, something went wrong
What it usually means
A general error. It’s often temporary — possibly a server hiccup, a weak connection or a glitching app.
What to do
Retry after a minute. If it keeps coming back, see Something went wrong for the fix by where you see it.
Sorry, this content isn’t available right now
What it usually means
Usually the post or profile was deleted, its privacy settings don’t include you, or you can’t view it — rather than a bug.
What to do
Check the link is current. If lots of content shows this, try Fix 4.
This page isn’t available right now
What it usually means
Often the page was removed, renamed, or isn’t visible to you.
What to do
Search for the page by name. If every page shows this, check your connection and app version.
Upload failed
What it usually means
Often a weak connection, a file the app can’t process, or low storage.
What to do
Try Wi-Fi, a smaller file, and Fix 5.
We suspended your account / We disabled your account
What it usually means
Meta has taken action on the account.
You’ve tried entering too many codes. Try again later.
What it usually means
A temporary security limit after several code attempts.
What to do
Stop trying for a while, then see Login code not received.
You’re temporarily blocked
What it usually means
Facebook has limited an action (such as posting or messaging) for a period, often because it was done many times quickly.
What to do
Wait for the limit to lift and check the notice for details. See Account disabled or suspended.
Your account has been locked
What it usually means
Usually a security lock after suspicious activity; Facebook asks you to confirm it’s you.
What to do
Follow the on-screen steps. If you think someone else got in, see Facebook hacked.

When the problem is your account, not the app

App and device fixes can’t change decisions made about your account. If you see any of the following, skip the reinstalling and go straight to the matching guide:

  • You’re asked to confirm your identity, enter a code, or take a video selfie — see Can’t log in.
  • Your password or email changed without you doing it, or friends received messages you didn’t send — see Facebook hacked.
  • “We suspended your account”, “We disabled your account” or similar — see Account disabled or suspended.
  • One feature is unavailable while the rest of Facebook works — see the Marketplace or Dating guides.

How to know it worked

  • Your feed refreshes with new posts and images load.
  • You can open Messenger, Marketplace and notifications without errors.
  • The problem doesn’t return after closing and reopening the app.
  • It works on both Wi-Fi and mobile data.

Still not working? Your next steps

  1. Re-run the 60-second test. If it now fails everywhere, it’s likely an outage that started after you began.
  2. Use the matching guide in Pick your problem — feature-specific problems have their own fixes.
  3. Use Facebook in a browser while you wait for the next app update.
  4. Report the problem to Facebook (see Official help routes).
  5. Not sure what’s wrong? Try the Fix Finder — a few questions will point you to the right guide.

Can you contact Facebook? What support actually exists

Many people search for a Facebook phone number when things break. It helps to know what’s realistic before you spend time on it:

  • In-app help: Meta says it has introduced a centralised support hub inside the Facebook and Instagram apps on iPhone and Android, for things like account recovery and security.
  • Report a problem: for bugs (a broken feature or a payment issue), use profile picture > Help & support > Report a problem on facebook.com, and add a screenshot and description.
  • Phone support: Meta has a help page explaining where phone support is and isn’t available. Be very wary of numbers found in search results or comments — scam “support lines” are common.
  • Account recovery: Meta’s official recovery hub covers Facebook, Instagram and Threads.

All of these are linked in Official help routes. SocialAppFix is independent and can’t contact Meta for you or see your account.

Frequently asked questions

Is Facebook down right now?

Run the 60-second test: try a second device and a second network, and check whether others are affected. Meta’s metastatus.com page covers business products such as Ads Manager, not the everyday app, so it isn’t a reliable answer on its own.

Why is Facebook not working on my phone but working on my computer?

That usually points to the app on your phone, for example an outdated version, damaged cache or a data setting. Update the app, clear its cache (or offload it on iPhone), and check mobile data is allowed for Facebook.

Will reinstalling Facebook delete my account or photos?

No — your account isn’t affected and most content is stored online. Reinstalling signs you out, so check you know your password and can get login codes first. End-to-end encrypted Messenger chat history may need your Messenger PIN or backup to restore.

Why does Facebook keep saying “Something went wrong”?

It’s a general error that’s often temporary. Wait a minute and retry, check your connection, update the app and clear its cache. If it happens for everyone, it’s likely an outage. Our Something went wrong guide breaks it down by where you see it.

Does clearing the Facebook cache delete anything?

Clearing the cache on Android removes temporary files only. Clear storage (or Clear data) is different: it resets the app and signs you out. On iPhone, offloading keeps the app’s documents and data.

What are the most common Facebook problems?

Login and two-factor code problems, the app crashing or not loading, Marketplace or Dating going missing, Messenger messages not sending, notifications not arriving, and hacked or disabled accounts. Each has its own guide in Pick your problem.

Is there a Facebook phone number I can call?

Meta has a help page about where phone support is and isn’t available (linked above). Be cautious with numbers found in search results or comments — fake support lines are a common scam.
