Quick answer
If the Comment button is missing under someone’s post, a common reason is that they limited who can comment, for example to friends or to people they mention. Meta says you’ll then see that they’ve limited comments, and there’s nothing to fix on your side. In a group, admins can slow comments to one every five minutes, limit how often you comment, or suspend you. If you can’t comment anywhere, Facebook may have restricted your account: check Profile status. If comments just won’t load, update the app and clear its cache. To control who comments on your own posts, go to Settings & privacy > Settings > Followers and public content.
Does this match what you see?
- There’s no Comment button under someone’s public post.
- A note says the person has limited who can comment.
- In a group you can only comment every few minutes, or not at all.
- You can’t comment on any post, and a notice mentions a restriction.
- Comments show a count but won’t open or load.
- You want fewer strangers commenting on your public posts.
iPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)
Comment settings are Meta’s own, for each device. The fixes for comments that won’t load are general troubleshooting.
Why this happens: the possible causes
Find the line that matches what you see.
| What you see | Most likely reason | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| No Comment button on one person’s post | They limited who can comment | Check the comment audience |
| Can’t comment on someone’s profile or cover photo | By default only friends can comment on these | Profile pictures |
| Can only comment every five minutes in a group | An admin slowed comments on that post | Group limits |
| Can’t comment in one group at all | An admin, or Facebook, suspended or limited you | Group limits |
| Can’t comment anywhere | A Facebook restriction on your account | Check Profile status |
| Comments won’t load | An app, browser or connection problem | Fix loading |
- The person limited who can commentCheck this first
Meta says people can choose who comments on their public posts, from everyone down to only the profiles and Pages they mention. If you’re outside that audience, Meta says you won’t see Comment below the post, and you’ll see that they’ve limited who can comment.
- A group admin limited commentsPossible
Meta says group admins can slow comments on a post to one per person every five minutes, limit how often a member comments, or suspend a member.
- Facebook restricted your accountPossible
Meta restricts features, including commenting, as strikes add up for content that breaks its Community Standards.
- An app or connection problemPossible
If comments won’t load at all, on every post, the app, the browser or your connection is the more likely cause.
Try these 60-second checks first
- Is it one post or every post? One post usually means a comment limit; every post points to a restriction or an app problem.
- Look under the post for a note that the person has limited who can comment.
- In a group, wait five minutes and try again.
- Open Profile status to check for a restriction.
How to fix it, step by step
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.
- Fix 1: Comment button missing on one person’s post? They limited who can comment
- Fix 2: Can’t comment on someone’s profile picture or cover photo?
- Fix 3: Can’t comment in a group? Check the admins’ limits
- Fix 4: Can’t comment anywhere? Check for a restriction
- Fix 5: Comments won’t load? Refresh the app or browser
- Fix 6: Control who can comment on your own public posts
- Fix 7: Your comment disappeared?
Fix 1: Comment button missing on one person’s post? They limited who can comment
Meta lets people choose who can comment on each public post. The options are Public, Friends and established followers (followers of more than 24 hours), Friends of friends, Friends, and Profiles and Pages you mention.
- Look below the post. Meta says if you’re not in the comment audience, you won’t see Comment, and you’ll see that the person has limited who can comment.
- This isn’t an error and there’s nothing to reset on your side. It’s the poster’s choice.
- If the person chose Friends and established followers and you only just followed them, you may be able to comment once you’ve followed for more than 24 hours.
Meta says a setting on one post applies to that post only. The same person’s other posts may allow your comments.
Did it work? You understand why you can’t comment on that post, and can comment on others.
Did Fix 1 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 1. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Fix 2: Can’t comment on someone’s profile picture or cover photo?
Profile pictures and cover photos follow a separate setting. Meta says that by default, only friends (and friends of anyone tagged) can like or comment on public profile information.
- If you’re not friends with the person, you may not be able to like or comment on their profile photos and videos, cover photos, featured photos or updates about their basic info. That’s the default, not an error.
- They can widen it themselves; it isn’t something you can change from your side.
Want more people to comment on yours? Meta’s steps: Settings & privacy > Settings > Followers and public content. Set Who Can Follow Me to Public, then under Public Profile Info choose Public, Friends of friends or Friends. Meta says follower settings are changing, and that to let anyone on Facebook like or comment on this information you need to turn on pro mode (external site, opens in a new tab).
Did it work? You know why you can’t comment on that photo, or you’ve changed the setting on your own profile.
Did Fix 2 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 2. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Fix 3: Can’t comment in a group? Check the admins’ limits
Group admins have their own tools for comments, and Meta explains each one.
- Slowed comments: Meta says admins and moderators can slow comments on a post so each person can comment only once every five minutes. Wait five minutes, then try again.
- Activity limits: an admin can cap how many comments you make per hour, for a time they choose.
- Suspension: an admin can temporarily stop you posting, commenting and reacting in the group.
- Limited membership: in some large private groups you can see and react but can’t comment until an admin approves you to participate.
- Facebook restriction: Meta says Facebook can also temporarily turn off your ability to post or comment in groups. Check your Support Inbox and Profile status.
- Using another profile? Meta says only one profile can interact with a single group post. If you posted with one profile, you can’t comment on that post with another.
Each of these is explained in full, with Meta’s steps, in can’t post or comment in a Facebook group and can’t join a Facebook group.
Did it work? You can comment once the limit ends, or you know who to ask.
Did Fix 3 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 3. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Fix 4: Can’t comment anywhere? Check for a restriction
If commenting is blocked on every post, across groups and profiles, Facebook may have restricted your account. Meta restricts features such as posting and commenting as strikes add up.
- Open Profile status. In the app: your profile > ⋯ > Profile settings > Profile status. On a computer: your profile > Options > Profile Status (where to find it).
- Look for a limited feature and its end date, and for Content removed.
- If you think a removal was wrong, request a review from Profile status, where it’s offered.
- For how long restrictions last, see Facebook jail.
Did it work? You know whether a restriction is blocking comments, and until when.
Did Fix 4 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 4. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Fix 5: Comments won’t load? Refresh the app or browser
If comments fail to open on every post, but nothing says you’re limited, the problem is usually the app, the browser or the connection. These are general troubleshooting steps.
iPhone & iPad
- Close Facebook completely and reopen it.
- Update Facebook from the App Store.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data to rule out the connection.
- Still stuck? Offload or reinstall the app. See clear Facebook’s cache.
Android
- Close Facebook completely and reopen it.
- Update Facebook from Google Play.
- Clear the Facebook app’s cache: your phone’s Settings > Apps (on some phones, App Management) > Facebook > Storage & cache (or just Storage) > Clear cache. See clear Facebook’s cache.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data to rule out the connection.
Computer (browser)
- Reload the page.
- Try a private window, or another browser, to rule out extensions and stored data.
- Clear Facebook’s cached data in your browser. See clear Facebook’s cache.
If you see an error such as “Something went wrong”, follow Facebook “Something went wrong”. If the whole app is down for many people at once, waiting is usually the only fix.
Did it work? Comments open and load normally.
Did Fix 5 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 5. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Fix 6: Control who can comment on your own public posts
Meta says by default everyone can comment on your public posts, even people who don’t follow you. You can change that for all your public posts, or for one post or reel.
iPhone & iPad
- All public posts: Menu > Settings & privacy > Settings > Followers and public content > Who can comment on your public posts? Choose Public, Friends of friends or Friends.
- One post: go to the post on your profile > Options (top right of the post) > Who can comment on this post? > choose an audience > Done.
- One reel: your profile > the reel > Options > Who can comment on this reel? > choose > Done.
Android
- All public posts: Menu > Settings & privacy > Settings > Followers and public content > Who can comment on your public posts? Choose Public, Friends or Friends of friends.
- One post: your profile > the post > Options > Who can comment on your post? > choose an audience > Done.
- One reel: your profile > the reel > Options > Who can comment on your reel? > choose > Done.
Computer (browser)
- All public posts: click your profile picture > Settings & privacy > Settings > Followers and public content (under Audience and visibility) > Who can comment on your public posts?
- One post: go to the post on your profile > Options > Who can comment on your post? > choose an audience > Done.
For a single post or reel, Meta lists five audiences: Public, Friends and established followers (friends, and people who’ve followed for more than 24 hours), Friends of friends, Friends, and Profiles and Pages you mention. A choice for one post or reel applies to that one only. On an iPad, in Facebook Lite or in a mobile browser, Meta says to change a single post’s comment audience from a computer. Meta also says changing a reel’s comment audience isn’t available to everyone yet; if you can’t, try the iPhone or Android app.
Did it work? People outside the audience you chose no longer see Comment on your post.
Did Fix 6 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 6. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Fix 7: Your comment disappeared?
If a comment you wrote is gone, Facebook may have removed it for going against its Community Standards, or, in a group, it may be waiting for admin approval.
- Check your notifications and Profile status > Content removed.
- If Facebook removed it, see Facebook removed your post for what it means and how to request a review.
- In a group where you’re a limited member, Meta says comments are only published once an admin approves you to participate.
Did it work? You know whether the comment was removed, or is waiting for approval.
Did Fix 7 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 7. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
How to know it worked
- You can comment on posts where you’re in the comment audience.
- Comments load normally in the app and browser.
- Your own public posts allow only the commenters you chose.
Still not working? Your next steps
- Can’t comment in a group? See can’t post or comment in a Facebook group.
- A restriction you don’t understand? See Facebook jail and Profile status.
- The whole app misbehaves? See Facebook not working.

Frequently asked questions
Why is there no Comment button on a Facebook post?
A common reason is that the person limited who can comment on that post. If you’re not in the audience they chose, you won’t see Comment, and you’ll see that they’ve limited comments.
What does “Friends and established followers” mean?
It’s one of Meta’s comment audiences: your friends, plus people who have followed you for more than 24 hours.
Why can I only comment every five minutes in a group?
A group admin or moderator has slowed comments on that post. Meta says each person can then comment only once every five minutes.
Why can’t I comment on someone’s Facebook profile picture?
Meta says that by default only friends (and friends of anyone tagged) can like or comment on public profile information such as profile pictures and cover photos. The owner can widen this in their settings.
How do I stop strangers commenting on my public posts?
Go to Settings & privacy > Settings > Followers and public content > Who can comment on your public posts?, and choose Friends or Friends of friends. You can also change it for a single post from its Options menu.
Can I turn off comments completely on my Facebook post?
Meta’s options for a single public post include Profiles and Pages you mention, which lets only the people you mention comment. We found no option that switches comments off entirely for profile posts in Meta’s help.
