Can’t Post or Comment in a Facebook Group? Why, and What You Can Do

When you can’t post, comment or take part in a group, the block comes from one of two places. Either a group admin has limited you, or Facebook has, sometimes by making your posts wait for admin approval. Less often, the app is simply misbehaving. Meta’s help explains each case. This guide helps you tell which one you have and what you can do about it.

Quick answer

Meta says your ability to post, comment or participate in a group can be turned off by a group admin, who may have temporarily suspended you, limited how often you can post or comment, or slowed down comments on a post. It can also be turned off by Facebook, which may require admins to approve your posts, for example after Community Standards violations. Check your Support Inbox for details, and Profile status for restrictions. If you can’t post in every group, it’s probably Facebook. If it’s one group, it’s probably that group’s admins.

Does this match what you see?

  • The box to write a post or comment is missing or greyed out in a group.
  • A notice says you’ve been suspended from a group, or can’t post for a while.
  • Your posts sit as pending and never appear.
  • You can only post or comment every so often, or comments on a post are slowed down.
  • You can’t post in any group, while other features work.
  • You can’t join a group with another of your profiles.

Group rules and admin tools work the same in the app and on facebook.com. The ☰ Menu is at the top left of the Home screen on iPhone and the top right on Android.

Why this happens: the possible causes

Meta’s help names two sources of group limits: the group’s admins, and Facebook itself.

Who is limiting you, and what it usually looks like

  • A group admin limited youCheck this first

Meta says admins can temporarily suspend you, limit how frequently you can post or comment, or slow down comments on a post. These limits apply only in that group.

  • Facebook restricted your participationPossible

Meta says Facebook may temporarily turn off your ability to post, comment or participate in groups, or require admins to approve your posts, for reasons such as Community Standards violations. Under Meta’s strike rules, two to six strikes can restrict features like posting in groups.

  • The group requires approval for postsPossible

Many groups review new posts before they appear. Posts then wait as pending until an admin approves or declines them.

  • The app, a link or a fileLess likely

If posting fails with an error rather than a notice, the cause may be the app, a blocked link or a file Facebook can’t accept.

Try these 60-second checks first

  • Can you post in other groups? If yes, it’s this group’s admins. If no, it’s probably Facebook.
  • Open your Support Inbox and look for a message about groups.
  • Check Profile status for an active restriction.
  • Read the group’s rules (on the group’s About section) for posting limits.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Blocked in one group? Check the admin’s limits

Safe & reversible5 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Admins can limit members in their own group. Meta lists three tools: a temporary suspension, a limit on how often you can post or comment, and slowed-down comments on a post.

  1. Open the group and look for a notice near the top, or where the post box should be. It often says what’s limited and for how long.
  2. Check your notifications for a message from the group.
  3. Read the group’s rules (usually in the group’s About section). Many groups limit promotions, links or how often you can post.
  4. If you’re suspended for a set time, wait for it to end. Admin suspensions are controlled by the group’s admins.
  5. If you think it’s a mistake, message one of the group’s admins politely. You can usually find them in the group’s members list.

Meta has help pages for group suspensions (external site, opens in a new tab), limits on how often you can post or comment (external site, opens in a new tab) and slowed-down comments (external site, opens in a new tab).

Did it work? The post box is back after the suspension or limit ends, or the admin has lifted it.

Fix 2: Blocked in all groups? Check for a Facebook restriction

Safe & reversible5 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says Facebook may temporarily turn off your ability to post, comment or participate in groups, for reasons such as Community Standards violations. Meta recommends checking your Support Inbox.

  1. Open your Support Inbox: on facebook.com, go to facebook.com/settings?tab=support (external site, opens in a new tab). Look for messages about groups.
  2. Open Profile status (profile photo > ⋯ > Profile Settings > More options > Profile status) and check Content removed and any active restriction with its end date.
  3. Wait for the end date. Meta’s strike rules and restriction lengths are in Facebook jail: restricted account.
  4. If Facebook removed content you think follows the rules, Meta says it usually offers a way to request a review. See how to ask for a review.

Did it work? Profile status shows no active restriction, and you can post in groups again.

Fix 3: Posts stuck as pending? They’re waiting for approval

Safe & reversibleVariesiPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

A pending post is waiting for an admin to approve it. Some groups review every post. Meta also says Facebook may require group admins to approve your posts as a restriction.

  1. Check whether the group says new posts need approval (often in the post box or the group’s rules). Meta says admins can turn on Require post approval, so every post waits in Pending posts until an admin or moderator approves it.
  2. Edited a post and it disappeared? Meta says admins can also turn on Approve edits, which sends edited posts back to Pending posts for review.
  3. New to the group? In private groups with limited membership, Meta says new members can see posts and react but can’t post, comment or chat until an admin approves them to participate. In public groups, participant approval can hold your first post or comment for review.
  4. Give admins time. Busy groups can take a while, and some admins review in batches.
  5. Don’t post the same thing again and again while it’s pending. That can look like spam.
  6. If your posts need approval in every group, check your Support Inbox and Profile status (Fix 2). Facebook may be requiring approval.
  7. If an admin declines your post, read the group rules before trying again. Meta says admins can decline a post and give feedback, and that Admin Assist can automatically decline posts that match criteria the admin chose, so a decline may happen without a person looking at it.

Did it work? Your post appears in the group after approval.

Fix 4: Using another of your profiles

Safe & reversible2 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

If you have additional profiles, Meta explains how a suspension affects them. This isn’t a way around a limit. It explains what you’ll see.

  1. Meta says your profiles that are already in the group and aren’t suspended or banned can still take part.
  2. Meta says profiles that aren’t already in the group can’t see, join or take part in it until the suspension ends.

Did it work? You understand why one profile can take part and another can’t.

Fix 5: Posting fails with an error? Check the app, link and file

Safe & reversible5 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

If there’s no notice about a limit, and posting fails with an error, the post itself or the app may be the problem.

  1. Try the post without any link. If it goes through, the link may be blocked.
  2. Try a smaller photo or video, on Wi-Fi.
  3. Update the Facebook app, or try posting from facebook.com.
  4. For “Something went wrong” errors, see Something went wrong when posting.

Did it work? Your post goes through, or shows as pending in a group that needs approval.

Are you a group admin?

Meta’s strike rules also affect groups:

  • Meta says groups that repeatedly break its policies may be required to have admins approve posts, and may be removed from recommendations.
  • Meta says strikes can count against a group, including for violating posts that admins approve.
  • You can check your group’s violations and restrictions in Group Quality.
  • Meta also warns that Facebook may disable the group if an admin or moderator approves violating content from a member.
  • To review posts, Meta’s path on a computer is facebook.com/groups > your group > Pending posts (below Admin tools). You can also preapprove trusted members so their posts skip the queue.

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t I post in a Facebook group?

Meta says either a group admin has limited you (a suspension, a posting limit or slowed comments), or Facebook has (a temporary restriction, or requiring admins to approve your posts). If it’s one group, it’s usually the admins. If it’s every group, it’s usually Facebook.

Why are my group posts always pending?

They’re waiting for admin approval. Meta says admins can require approval for every post, for edited posts, and for new members’ first posts. If it happens in every group, Facebook may require approval for your posts, so check your Support Inbox and Profile status.

How long does a group suspension last?

It depends on the admin or the restriction. The notice in the group, your Support Inbox or Profile status usually shows when it ends.

Can Facebook support lift a group admin’s suspension?

Admin decisions belong to the group’s admins. You can message an admin politely if you think it was a mistake.

Where is my Support Inbox?

On facebook.com it’s at facebook.com/settings?tab=support. Meta recommends checking it for information about your ability to post, comment or participate in groups.
