Can’t Join a Facebook Group? Every Reason and What to Do

Joining a Facebook group is usually one tap, so it’s confusing when it doesn’t work. Facebook’s own help pages explain almost every case: a request that’s waiting for an admin, a hidden group that won’t show in search, a limit on how many groups you can be in, or rules about joining as a Page. Find what you’re seeing below.

Quick answer

Most of the time, nothing is broken: private groups need an admin to approve you, so your request waits until they do. Other reasons Facebook gives: you’re already in 6,000 groups (its limit), the group is hidden (hidden groups don’t appear in search, and only former members can request to join), you’re trying to join as a Page and the admins don’t allow Pages, or you were removed or banned from the group. If one of your profiles is suspended from a group, your other profiles that aren’t already in it can’t join until the suspension ends.

Does this match what you see?

  • You tapped Join but the group still shows your request as pending.
  • The group doesn’t appear when you search for it.
  • You can’t join new groups at all.
  • You can join as your profile but not as your Page.
  • You joined a private group but can’t post, comment or chat in it.
  • A group you used to be in has disappeared or won’t let you back in.

The search-and-join steps are Meta’s own for each device; the other steps are our advice based on Meta’s rules. Group admins choose many of these settings, so two groups can behave differently.

  • Your request is waiting for an adminCheck this first

Meta says that to join a private group you need to be approved by an admin, and that you may have to wait for approval, depending on the group’s settings.

  • The group is hidden, or you searched the wrong namePossible

Meta says hidden groups you’re not a member of won’t appear in search results. A misspelled name, or a group that was removed, also won’t show up.

  • You’re at the 6,000-group limitPossible

Meta says you can join up to 6,000 groups. After that you need to leave some before you can join new ones.

  • You’re joining as a PagePossible

Meta says group admins might not allow Pages to join, and that groups can’t invite Pages: Pages can only request to join.

  • You were removed, banned or suspendedLess likely

Removed members can request to join again; banned people can’t find the group or be invited again. A suspension on one profile also stops your other profiles that aren’t already in the group from joining until it ends.

Try these 60-second checks first

  • Check the group’s privacy: private groups need admin approval, so a pending request is normal.
  • Search for the exact group name, and check the spelling.
  • Make sure you’re joining as your profile, not a Page, unless the group accepts Pages.
  • If you’re in a lot of groups, count: Facebook’s limit is 6,000.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Request pending? Wait for an admin to approve you

Safe & reversibleDepends on the adminsiPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says anyone can join a public group automatically, with no approval. Private groups need admin approval to join, unless the group uses limited membership. Meta doesn’t say how long approval takes.

  1. Check whether the group is private. If it is, a pending request is normal. (In a public group you join straight away, though Meta says admins can still require approval before you post or participate.)
  2. Read the group’s About section and rules, if you can see them, so you know what the admins expect.
  3. Wait. Avoid canceling and re-sending the request repeatedly.
  4. If you know an admin or a member, you can ask them to look at the pending requests.

Meta has a page on the differences between public and private groups (external site, opens in a new tab).

Did it work? The group shows you as a member.

Fix 2: Can’t find the group? Search for it the right way

Safe & reversible2 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

You can only join a group you can open. Meta’s steps differ slightly by device.

iPhone & iPad

  1. Tap Search at the top of the page.
  2. Enter the group name, then tap Search.
  3. Tap the group name in the results, then tap Join Group.
  4. On an iPad, Meta’s route is Menu > Groups, then search for the group and tap Join Group.

Android

  1. Tap Search at the top of your screen.
  2. Enter the group name.
  3. Tap the group name in the results, then tap Join.

Computer (browser)

  1. Click Groups in the left menu of your Feed.
  2. Enter the group name in the search bar at the top.
  3. Select the group, then click + Join Group below the cover photo.

Don’t know the exact name? Browse instead: Menu > Groups > Discover shows groups Suggested for you (on a computer, Groups in the left menu > Discover). Still not there? Meta says hidden groups you’re not a member of don’t appear in search: only current, invited and former members can find them, and only former members can request to join. If you’ve never been a member, you’ll likely need a member to invite you. The group may also have been removed, or you may have been removed or blocked from it. See Facebook group not showing.

Did it work? You can open the group’s page and see a Join button.

Fix 3: In too many groups? Leave some to make room

Safe & reversible10 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says you can join up to 6,000 groups. Once you reach the limit, you can’t join new ones until you leave some. These are Meta’s steps for leaving a group.

iPhone & iPad

  1. Tap Menu > Groups > Your groups, and open a group you no longer use.
  2. Tap Joined below the group’s name, then Leave Group, and Leave Group again to confirm.
  3. Repeat for other groups, then try joining the new group again.

Android

  1. Tap Menu > Groups > Your groups, and open a group you no longer use.
  2. Tap Joined below the group’s name, then Leave Group, and Leave Group again to confirm.
  3. Repeat for other groups, then try joining the new group again.

Computer (browser)

  1. Go to facebook.com/groups and open a group you no longer use.
  2. Click Joined at the top right, select Leave group, then click Leave Group to confirm.
  3. Repeat for other groups, then try joining the new group again.

Meta says members aren’t notified when you leave. The group disappears from your list and your Feed, and you stop getting its notifications. Are you the only admin? You’ll be asked to invite a new admin, and Meta says the group is automatically paused if you don’t pick one, or nobody accepts, within seven days.

Did it work? The Join button works for the new group.

Fix 4: Joining as a Page? Check the group allows it

Safe & reversible3 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta gives specific rules for Pages: admins might not allow Pages to join, groups can’t invite Pages, and Pages can only request to join.

  1. Check whether the group accepts Pages. Meta says admins choose between Profiles and Pages or Only profiles: in private groups this controls who can join, and in public groups whether Pages can post and comment. If it’s set to Only profiles, you can only join as your profile.
  2. Don’t wait for an invitation for your Page: groups can’t invite Pages, so the Page has to request to join.
  3. Already in the group as your profile? To take part as your Page instead, change your interaction settings (external site, opens in a new tab).

Meta also points out that several people may manage a Page, and Meta says all of that Page’s admins can see and interact with the group’s posts and members. Meta has a page on allowing Pages to join groups (external site, opens in a new tab). Group admins: see the setting below.

Did it work? Your Page’s join request is sent, or you know the group only accepts profiles.

Fix 5: Joined but can’t post? You may be a limited member

Safe & reversibleDepends on the adminsiPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Some large private groups use limited membership. Meta says you join automatically and can see all group content and members, react and invite others, but you can’t post, comment or chat until an admin approves you to participate. You’re listed as a “limited member”.

  1. Answer any participation questions the admins have set up. You don’t need to fill in a membership questionnaire to join, but you may be asked questions when you request to participate.
  2. Wait for the admins. Meta says your request to participate goes to them when you join, or when you first create a post or comment.
  3. Posts or comments you write before you’re approved stay waiting: Meta says they’re only published if the admins approve your request to participate.
  4. Watch your notifications: Meta says limited members are notified when they’re approved. After that you can post, comment and chat like any member.
  5. If you were able to post before and now can’t, it’s a different problem: see can’t post in a Facebook group.

If the admins turn limited membership off, Meta says existing limited members become pending membership requests again, and lose access to the group’s content until they’re approved. Meta’s page: about limited membership (external site, opens in a new tab).

Did it work? You’ve been notified that you’re approved, and you can post and comment.

Fix 6: Using an additional profile? Two per group, each approved separately

Safe & reversible2 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta has specific rules for additional profiles in groups. They explain why one of your profiles can join and another can’t.

  1. Only two profiles per account per group. Meta says up to two profiles from the same account can join or participate in the same group. If two of yours are already in it, a third can’t join.
  2. Each profile needs its own approval. In private groups, and public groups that require participant approval, Meta says every profile has to be approved separately, even if your main profile is already a member.
  3. Suspensions and bans carry over to profiles outside the group. If one of your profiles is suspended or banned, your profiles that aren’t already in the group can’t see or join it (until a suspension ends). A removal has no effect on your other profiles.

Meta says you can no longer create new additional profiles; existing ones aren’t affected. Its Community Standards apply to every profile, and serious or repeated violations from any of them can lead to profiles being disabled, including your main one. Meta’s page: how additional profiles work in groups (external site, opens in a new tab).

Did it work? You know which of your profiles can join the group.

Fix 7: Removed, banned or suspended from the group?

Safe & reversible2 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Group admins and moderators can remove or ban members, and admins can suspend them. Each one affects joining differently.

  1. Removed: Meta says removed members have to request to join again. Send a new request.
  2. Banned: Meta says banned people can’t find the group in search, can’t see its content and can’t be invited again. Only the group’s admins or moderators can lift a ban: see removed vs banned from a group.
  3. One of your profiles is suspended: Meta says your other profiles that aren’t already in the group can’t see, join or participate in it until the suspension ends. Wait for the suspension to finish.

Don’t create new profiles to get around a ban. Meta says admins can also ban future accounts a person creates, though Facebook may not detect every one.

Did it work? You know whether you can request again, or need to wait or contact an admin.

Group admins: limited membership in brief

  • Who can use it: Meta says only certain large private, visible groups. It isn’t available to hidden groups.
  • Turn it on or off in the Facebook app: your group > Manage > Group settings > Membership > Limited membership. Any membership questions become participation questions.
  • Review requests: instead of membership requests you get Participation requests (on a computer, under Admin tools; in the app, under Manage). Approving someone also publishes their pending posts and comments.
  • Automate it: Admin Assist > Approve participant if, using account age, participation questions, friends in the group or location. Meta says it only approves when all criteria are met.
  • Meta suggests it may not suit sensitive groups where you want to vet people before they can see content and members.

Group admins: let Pages join, or keep them out

Meta says group admins choose whether Pages, profiles or both can join or take part.

  • Private group: Manage > Group settings > Membership (on a computer, Manage membership) > Who can join the group > Profiles and Pages or Only profiles > Save.
  • Public group: Manage > Group settings > Participation > Pages can post and comment > On or Off (on a computer, Who can participate in the group > Profiles and Pages or Only profiles) > Save.
  • Meta says changing this setting doesn’t remove Pages already in your group.

What happens after you join

  • Meta says that when you join a group, group members can see that you’re a member.
  • Depending on the group’s privacy level, people outside the group may see it too.
  • If you joined as a Page, everyone who manages that Page may be able to see and interact with the group, depending on the settings.

How to know it worked

  • The group shows you as a member, or your request is pending with a reason you understand.
  • You can find the group in search, or you know it’s hidden and need an invitation.
  • You know whether you’re joining as your profile or your Page.

Still not working? Your next steps

  1. Joined but can’t post or comment after approval? See can’t post in a Facebook group.
  2. Group gone from your list or search? See Facebook group not showing.
  3. Can’t use groups at all, and other features are blocked too? Check Profile status for a restriction.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Facebook group request still pending?

Private groups need an admin to approve new members, and Meta says you may have to wait for approval, depending on the group’s settings. Meta doesn’t say how long approval takes.

How many Facebook groups can I join?

Meta says up to 6,000. After that you need to leave some groups before you can join new ones.

Why can’t I find a Facebook group in search?

Meta says hidden groups you’re not a member of don’t appear in search. Only current, invited and former members can find them. The name might also be misspelled, or the group may have been removed.

Can a Facebook Page join a group?

Sometimes. Meta says group admins might not allow Pages, groups can’t invite Pages, and Pages can only request to join.

I joined a group but can’t post. Why?

The group may use limited membership, which Meta says lets you see and react to content but not post, comment or chat until an admin approves you to participate.

Will members know if I leave a Facebook group?

No. Meta says members aren’t notified when you leave. You’re removed from the member list, and people no longer know when you’ve seen a group post.

Can people see which groups I join?

Meta says group members can see that you’re a member, and non-members may too, depending on the group’s privacy level.
