How to Change Your Facebook Page Name or Username (and Why the Option Might Be Missing)

A Facebook Page name change is a request. You make it from inside the Page, and only people with the right kind of access can do it. Your Page’s username (the @name in its web address) is set in the same place, but only on a computer. Here are Meta’s steps for both, and the reasons Meta gives when the options don’t appear.

Quick answer

Switch into your Page, then go to Settings & privacy > Settings > Page setup > Name. Update the name and choose Review Change. On a computer you then enter your password and click Request Change. In the apps you tap Submit for approval. Only people with Facebook access to the Page can do this, not people with task access. If there’s no option to edit, Meta gives four reasons: your access doesn’t allow it, the name was changed recently, the Page has limits on it, or it’s a regional Page under a global Page. Changing the name doesn’t change the Page’s username. To create a username, use a computer: Page setup > Name > Edit next to your username.

Does this match what you see?

  • You want to rename a Facebook Page you manage.
  • You can’t find where to edit the Page name.
  • The Edit option next to the Page name isn’t there.
  • You’re not sure whether a new name will also change the Page’s web address (username).
  • You want a short @username and web address for your Page, or the one you want is taken.

iPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta’s instructions for Facebook Lite say to change a Page name on a computer, a mobile browser, or the Facebook app for iPhone or Android.

Why this happens: the possible causes

If you can’t change the name, Meta gives these reasons.

  • You have task access, not Facebook accessCheck this first

Meta says people with Facebook access to a Page can request a name change, and people with task access can’t.

  • The name was changed recentlyCheck this first

Meta says the option may not appear if you, or someone else with Facebook access, recently changed the Page’s name.

  • Limits on the PagePossible

Pages can have limits placed on them for not following Meta’s rules. Meta limits significant name changes that could mislead people.

  • A regional Page under a global PageLess likely

Meta says you can’t change the name of a regional Page if it falls under a global Page.

Try these 60-second checks first

  • Make sure you’ve switched into the Page. The name setting is in the Page’s own settings, not your profile’s.
  • Read Meta’s guidelines for Page names (external site, opens in a new tab) before you choose a new name.
  • Have your Facebook password ready. On a computer, Meta asks for it to request the change.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Request a new Page name on a computer

Safe & reversible3 minComputer (browser)

These are Meta’s steps for facebook.com.

Computer (browser)

  1. Log into Facebook, then click your profile photo in the top right.
  2. Click See all Profiles, then select the Page.
  3. Click your Page photo in the top right.
  4. Click Settings & privacy, then Settings.
  5. Click Page setup, then Name.
  6. Below General Page Settings, click Edit next to the Page name.
  7. Update the name, then click Review Change.
  8. Enter your password, then click Request Change.

Did it work? You’ve sent the request. The new name shows on the Page once it’s approved.

Fix 2: Request a new Page name in the Facebook app

Safe & reversible3 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

In the app, you switch into the Page first, then open its settings.

iPhone & iPad

  1. Tap Menu at the top left (on iPad, the bottom right), or your profile picture.
  2. Tap Options, then select the Page you want to switch into.
  3. Tap Menu again (top left; on iPad, bottom right), scroll down and tap Settings & Privacy, then Settings.
  4. Tap Page setup, then Name.
  5. Update the name, tap Review Change, then Submit for approval.

Android

  1. Tap ☰ Menu. Meta’s steps put it at the top left. On the Android phone we checked, it was at the top right.
  2. Tap Options, then select the Page you want to switch into.
  3. Tap ☰ Menu again (the same place as before), scroll down and tap Settings & Privacy, then Settings.
  4. Tap Page setup, then Name.
  5. Update the name, tap Review Change, then Submit for approval.

Using Facebook Lite? Meta says to change a Page name on a computer, a mobile browser, or the Facebook app for iPhone or Android instead.

Did it work? You’ve submitted the name for approval.

Fix 3: No option to edit the Page name? Check these

Safe & reversible5 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta lists four reasons the edit option may not appear.

  1. Your access: only people with Facebook access to the Page can request a name change. With task access you can’t. Check your access with Meta’s steps to see your Page access or role (external site, opens in a new tab), and ask someone with Facebook access to make the change.
  2. A recent change: if you or someone else with Facebook access changed the name recently, the option may not appear.
  3. Limits on the Page: check the Page’s status for restrictions. See Facebook Page restricted.
  4. Regional Pages: you can’t rename a regional Page that falls under a global Page.

Did it work? You know which reason applies, or the Edit option now appears.

Fix 4: Create or change your Page’s username and web address (on a computer)

Safe & reversible3 minComputer (browser)

A username appears below your Page name and in its web address (facebook.com/username), which helps people find and remember the Page. Meta says you can only create or change it on a computer, and you need Facebook access to the Page: with task access you can’t.

Computer (browser)

  1. Log into Facebook on a computer, then click your profile photo in the top right.
  2. Click See all profiles, then select the Page.
  3. Click the Page’s profile picture in the top right.
  4. Click Settings & privacy, then Settings.
  5. In the left menu, click Page setup.
  6. Click Name. Below General Page Settings, click Edit next to your username.
  7. Enter a new username. If it’s available, click Save changes.

Using the iPhone, iPad or Android app, or a phone browser? Meta says you can only create or change a Page’s username when you’re logged into Facebook on a computer. Changing the username also changes the Page’s web address, so update any links you’ve shared.

Did it work? The @username shows below your Page name, and facebook.com/yourusername opens the Page.

Page usernames: what to know

  • Changing a Page’s name doesn’t change its username, according to Meta.
  • Meta’s example: a Page named Jasper’s Market could use @JaspersMarket.
  • If the username you want is taken or not approved, choose a different one that follows Meta’s guidelines for custom usernames (external site, opens in a new tab).
  • Newly created Pages may not be able to create a username straight away. Meta says this can happen if you’ve recently created several new Pages.
  • A Page’s username may be removed because of inactivity.

Meta’s username rules

  • Only one username per Page or profile, and it can’t be one that’s already in use.
  • Only letters A–Z, numbers 0–9 and periods (.).
  • No generic terms and no domain extensions such as .com or .net, including country ones such as .ie, .de or .ca.
  • At least 5 characters long.
  • Periods and capital letters don’t make a username different: Meta says johnsmith55, John.Smith55 and john.smith.55 count as the same username.
  • It mustn’t impersonate someone else, and it must follow Facebook’s Terms (external site, opens in a new tab).
  • For Pages, Meta’s username guidelines say you must be an admin to create or change the username. Its Page-username page describes this as having Facebook access to the Page.

Choosing a name that’s likely to be approved

Name changes are requests, not instant edits, so check Meta’s guidelines for Page names (external site, opens in a new tab) first. Meta also says it limits significant name changes that may mislead people.

Changing your personal profile name has different rules, including a 60-day limit. See How to change your name on Facebook.

  1. If the Page has other limits, see Facebook Page restricted.
  2. If you’ve lost access to the Page, see Facebook Page hacked or lost admin access.
  3. To change your own name instead, see How to change your name on Facebook.
