Quick answer
If a group won’t show in search, Meta says it may be hidden from search, you may have misspelled its name, it may have been removed for going against the Community Standards, or you may have been removed or blocked from it. To keep Groups handy, pin the tab: Settings > Preferences > Tab bar > Customize the bar. To see the newest group posts, open Feeds (and its Groups filter, if shown). If you’re an admin and your group was removed, Meta lets you appeal (external site, opens in a new tab).
Does this match what you see?
- You search for a group by name, but it doesn’t appear.
- A group you were in seems to have disappeared.
- The Groups tab isn’t on your tab bar any more.
- You don’t see posts from your groups in your feed.
- You manage a group and it’s been removed.
iPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)
The tab bar steps are for the Facebook app (checked on an Android phone). Search and group rules apply on every device.
Why this happens: the possible causes
Start with what you see.
| What you see | Likely reason | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| Group not in search results | Hidden group, misspelling, removed group, or you were removed | Fix 1 |
| A group you were in has gone from your list | You may have been removed or blocked, or the group was removed | Fix 1 |
| No Groups tab | It may be set to Auto or Hidden on your tab bar | Fix 2 |
| Group posts missing from your feed | Home shows recommendations; Feeds shows the newest posts | Fix 3 |
| You’re an admin and the group is gone | Meta may have removed it | Fix 4 |
- The group is hidden from searchCheck this first
Meta says a group may not appear in search because it’s hidden. Meta explains the difference between visible and hidden groups (external site, opens in a new tab).
- A misspelled nameCheck this first
Meta says you may have misspelled the group’s name in search.
- You were removed or bannedPossible
Meta says banned people can’t find the group in search or see its content. Removed members can request to join again.
- The group was removedPossible
Meta says a group may have been removed for going against its Community Standards.
- Search is personalizedPossible
Meta says your search results are based on things like your Facebook activity and Facebook community activity.
Try these 60-second checks first
- Check the spelling of the group’s name, or ask a member to send you a link.
- Ask a friend who’s a member whether they can still see the group.
- Look for the Groups tab along the tab bar in the app.
How to fix it, step by step
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.
Fix 1: Group not showing in search? Check these four things
Meta lists four reasons a group can’t be found in Facebook search.
- Spelling: search again with the exact name, or ask a member to send you a link to the group.
- Hidden group: Meta says only current, invited and former members can find a hidden group in search, and only former members can request to join it. If you’ve never been a member, ask a member to invite you. See hidden groups explained.
- Removed or banned: Meta says removed members have to request to join again. Banned people can’t find the group in search, can’t see its content and can’t be invited again. Only an admin or moderator can unban someone. See removed or banned.
- Group removed: if members can’t find it either, Meta may have removed it for going against its Community Standards.
Meta says search results are based on things like your Facebook activity, so the same search can give different results for different people. See what shows up in search (external site, opens in a new tab).

Fix 2: Groups tab missing? Pin it to your tab bar
Facebook lets you choose which tabs appear on your tab bar. On the phone we checked, Groups could be pinned there.
- Open ☰ Menu > Settings and privacy > Settings.
- Under Preferences, tap Tab bar, then Customize the bar.
- Next to Groups, use the drop-down to set it to Pinned. On the phone we checked, the screen said you can pin up to 2 tabs.
- If two tabs are already pinned, change one of them to Auto first. If Groups is under Hidden, set it to Pinned or Auto.
Under Tab bar, Manage notification dots lets you turn the dots on the Groups tab on or off.
Did it work? The Groups tab shows on your tab bar.
Did Fix 2 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 2. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Fix 3: Group posts not in your feed? Use Feeds and the Groups filter
Meta describes Home as built around recommendations, and Feeds as the tab for the most recent posts from your friends, Favorites, Pages and groups.
- Open ☰ Menu, tap See more, then Feeds.
- Use the Groups filter at the top of Feeds, if it’s shown, to see posts from your groups.
- Or open the Groups tab, if it’s on your tab bar, to see your groups’ activity.
- If the whole feed is stuck or showing old posts, see Facebook feed not updating.
Did it work? You can see recent posts from your groups.
Did Fix 3 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 3. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Fix 4: Admin of a group that was removed? You can appeal
Meta says a group may be removed for going against its Community Standards, and admins can appeal the decision to disable it.
- Follow Meta’s steps to appeal the decision to disable your group (external site, opens in a new tab).
- Read the Community Standards (external site, opens in a new tab) for the rule involved before you appeal.
- Never pay anyone who offers to restore a group for a fee. See account recovery scams.
Did it work? You’ve submitted an appeal.
Did Fix 4 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 4. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Fix 5: Admin: make your group visible (or hidden)
If people can’t find your group in search, it may be hidden. Meta says admins can switch a group between visible and hidden. Public groups are always visible; to hide one, make it private first.
iPhone & iPad
- Tap Menu (top left; on iPad, bottom right), then Groups > Your groups, and select your group.
- Tap Manage group at the top right.
- Tap Group Settings.
- Under Set up group, tap Hide Group and choose Visible or Hidden.
- Tap Save.
Android
- Tap Menu, then Groups > Your groups, and select your group (if you don’t see Groups, tap See more). Meta’s steps put Menu at the top left; on the Android phone we checked, it was at the top right.
- Tap Manage group at the top right.
- Scroll down and tap Group settings.
- Under Basic group info, tap Hide group and choose Visible or Hidden.
- Tap Save.
Computer (browser)
- Go to facebook.com/groups and select your group.
- Click Group Settings in the left menu.
- Click Edit next to Hide Group.
- Choose Visible or Hidden, then click Save.
In a phone browser or Facebook Lite: Menu (top right) > Groups > select your group > tap the group’s name > Settings > Hide Group > Visible or Hidden. Meta says members aren’t notified when you change the group’s visibility.
Did it work? Group Settings shows the visibility you chose.

Visible and hidden groups explained
| Visible | Hidden | |
|---|---|---|
| Who can see the group’s name | Anyone | Current, invited and former members |
| Who can see the description | Anyone | Current, invited and former members |
| Who can find it in search and elsewhere on Facebook | All Facebook users | Current, invited and former members |
| Who can request to join | All Facebook users | Former members |
Meta says public groups are always visible. Only private groups can be hidden.
Removed or banned from a group: what it means
| Removed | Banned | |
|---|---|---|
| Can rejoin? | Yes, by requesting to join again | No, and can’t be invited again |
| Can find the group in search? | Depends on the group’s visibility | No |
| Can see the group’s content? | Depends on the group’s privacy | No |
Meta notes a banned person may still see content they previously sent in certain chats with Meta AI or other AIs while they were a member.
For admins and moderators: unban someone
- Computer: go to facebook.com/groups (external site, opens in a new tab), select the group, click Members or People below the cover photo, then click Unban next to the person and confirm.
- Android: Manage (top right of the group) > Members or People > Blocked > their profile > Unban member > UNBAN MEMBER.
- iPhone and iPad: Manage (on iPad, Manage group) > Members or People > Banned > their profile > Unban [name].
- Phone browser: Manage below the group’s name > Members or People > Blocked > their profile > Unban [name] > Confirm.
When banning, Meta offers Delete recent activity (their last 7 days of posts, comments, reactions, polls and pending member invitations) and Ban future accounts, though Meta says Facebook may not detect all new accounts.
Hidden, removed or blocked: how to tell
- Misspelling: try the exact name, or ask a member for a link.
- Hidden group, or you were banned: members can still find the group, but you can’t. From the outside these look the same, so ask a member whether they can invite you.
- The group was removed: nobody can find it, including members.
These are our own rules of thumb, based on Meta’s four reasons, not Meta’s wording.
Error messages and what they mean
Meta’s help doesn’t quote on-screen messages for this, so we describe what you might notice.
How to know it worked
- You’ve found the group, or know why you can’t.
- The Groups tab is pinned, if you want it.
- You can see recent group posts in Feeds.
Still not working? Your next steps
- If you can see the group but can’t post or comment, see Can’t post in a Facebook group.
- If the whole feed is stuck, see Facebook feed not updating.
