Instagram Music Not Available or Audio Muted? Why It Happens and What You Can Do

Our take: music problems on Instagram are usually about licensing rather than your phone. Meta says a song may not be available for your account type or country or region, licensing deals can change, and rights holders can block content that uses their music. Here’s what each situation means and what you can do.

Quick answer

If a song isn’t available, Meta says the Licensed Music Library may not be available for your account type or in your country or region, or licensing agreements may have changed. You can use music and sound effects from Meta’s Sound Collection instead. If your audio was muted, you may be able to replace the track. If you can’t hear someone else’s audio, it may not be available where you are, or it may have been muted or taken down.

Does this match what you see?

  • A song you want doesn’t appear or can’t be used when you add music to your content.
  • You can’t see the Music option or music sticker at all.
  • Your reel is credited to the wrong song, or a downloaded reel has no sound.
  • Instagram muted the audio on a post you made.
  • Someone else’s Reel or Story plays without sound.

Meta says the Licensed Music Library may not be available for some account types or in some countries or regions, so (our note) two people may see different music options.

Why this happens: the possible causes

Meta lists these reasons, depending on whose content it is.

Instagram audio problem and possible causes
ProblemPossible causes (Meta)
Can’t access a song for your contentLicensed Music Library not available for your account type or country/region; licensing agreements changed
Audio on your content is mutedNo access to the Licensed Music Library; licensing changed; the rights holder blocked your content
Can’t hear someone else’s audioNot available in your country/region; muted for the creator; track taken down; artist or label technical issues; licensing changed; rights holder blocked it

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Can’t use a song? Use the Sound Collection instead

Safe & reversible5 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

Meta says the Licensed Music Library is meant for personal, non-commercial use, so certain business accounts and certain types of posts don’t have access to it. Licensed music may also not be available in some countries or regions, and licensing agreements can change.

  1. No Music option at all? Meta says to update Instagram to the latest version from the App Store or Google Play, and notes the music sticker isn’t available to everyone. When you record a reel, Music is in the tool menu on the left.
  2. Our tip: try another song, because availability varies by track.
  3. If you don’t have access to the Licensed Music Library, Meta says you can add audio from its Sound Collection: over 14,000 royalty-free songs and sounds that are safe to use in Reels and Stories, including for commercial purposes like ads.
  4. Find it in Stories by swiping up and choosing the Music sticker, or in Reels by tapping Audio in the Reels camera.

Our advice: don’t try to get around regional music limits (for example with a VPN). Content can still be muted or blocked by the rights holder.

Did it work? Your content has audio you’re allowed to use.

Fix 2: Audio on your post or reel was muted? Try replacing the track

Safe & reversible3 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

Meta says your audio may be muted because you don’t have access to the Licensed Music Library, licensing agreements changed, or the rights holder blocked your content because it contains content they own. Your post can still be viewed while the audio is muted.

  1. Open the Instagram app on your Android or iPhone and find the post or reel with the muted audio.
  2. Tap Audio unavailable.
  3. Tap Replace audio, then tap Replace audio again.
  4. Choose the part of the track you want (for a reel, tap the track first).
  5. Tap Done in the top right, then tap Done again to finish.

Meta says you can only replace a muted track one time, using another licensed track from the Instagram audio library. You may also see a notification to replace the audio when you view the post. For reels, Meta notes you can only replace the audio if the reel has been muted. Our note: Meta describes replacements only with licensed audio from the Instagram audio library (not the Sound Collection), so if your account has no library access, replacement may not be offered; use Sound Collection audio or a voiceover when you post again.

Did it work? The post plays with the new audio.

Fix 3: Your reel is credited to the wrong song

Safe & reversible1 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

Meta says that when it detects licensed audio in a reel you recorded or uploaded, it automatically changes the credit from Original Audio to the artist and song title and adds your reel to that song’s audio page. If it picked the wrong track, you can undo it.

  1. Open the reel and tap Options at the bottom.
  2. Tap Remove From Audio Page.

Meta says your audio will then be credited to you as Original Audio next to your username. It also says that if you upload licensed audio as original audio, it may change the description to the artist’s name and song.

Did it work? Your reel shows Original Audio next to your username.

Fix 4: Downloaded reel has no sound, or all your reel’s audio disappeared

Safe & reversible1 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

Meta says that when you download a reel that includes licensed audio or another creator’s original audio, all the audio is removed from the download. Reels with only your own original audio download with all their audio.

  1. Check what audio the reel uses: if it includes library music or someone else’s original audio, a silent download is expected.
  2. If all the audio vanished from a posted reel, Meta says this happens when audio included in your reel is deleted; you’ll get a notification if it does.
  3. If the audio was muted rather than removed, see replace the track.

Did it work? You know why the audio is missing.

Fix 5: Reel plays in a different language or an AI voice? Switch or turn off translations

Safe & reversible2 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says that if a reel’s creator used Meta AI to translate it, you’ll hear it in your default language when available. Translated reels aren’t available to everyone yet, and currently cover Spanish, English, Hindi, Portuguese, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Kannada.

  1. This reel: tap Translated with Meta AI, then tap the language you want to hear. The language it was recorded in says Original.
  2. All reels (app): go to your profile, tap the menu in the top right (Settings and activity), then Language and translations, where you can turn off text and voice translations.
  3. While watching (app): tap More > Translations to choose a language to translate to, mark languages not to translate, turn off text or voice translations, or report a translation error.

Meta says Meta AI’s translations may not be accurate or relevant. To report one: More > Translations > Report translation error, then choose the type of error.

Did it work? The reel plays in the language you chose.

Fix 6: Can’t hear audio on someone else’s post

Safe & reversible1 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

Meta lists several reasons. Our note: none of them can be fixed from your side.

  1. The audio may not be available in your country or region.
  2. The track may have been muted because the creator didn’t have access to the audio’s source.
  3. The track may have been taken down, or the artist or label may be having technical issues.
  4. Licensing agreements may have changed, or the rights holder may have blocked the content.

Our advice: if no posts play sound at all, check your phone isn’t on silent and the volume is up, then see Instagram keeps crashing for general fixes.

Did it work? Other posts play with sound, so the issue is limited to that track.

What audio you can use in a reel

  • Meta says you can use your own original audio, original audio by another Reels creator, or audio from the Instagram audio library using the Audio tool.
  • You can’t use original audio from a feed video unless you remix the video.
  • Licensed audio includes music, movies, TV shows and sound effects, and must be credited to the artist with the track name.
  • You can mix audio before sharing: after recording, tap Next > Audio, then add Music, a Voiceover or Sound Effects, drag the bars to adjust each volume, and tap Edit below an audio type to add effects, edit or remove it (Meta notes not all options are available for every audio type).
  • Meta says your microphone audio (or audio in a video you uploaded) shows as Camera Audio on the left; library audio or another creator’s audio shows on the right.
  • Your original audio on public reels: Meta says anyone on Instagram, and on Meta AI apps or websites, can make a reel with it. To turn this off for Meta AI: Profile > Menu > under How others can interact with you, tap Sharing and reuse, then switch off Reels under Allow people to create with and reuse your original audio on Meta AI. Meta says making your account private keeps your original audio from being reused in other people’s reels.

Spotify music note not showing or not updating

Meta says you can share what you’re playing on Spotify as an Instagram note, but the feature isn’t available to everyone.

  • To share: tap Messages (on iPad, your profile picture on the left) > Note… > Music (tap Link Spotify first if needed) > More next to Share from Spotify. If nothing appears, start playing music in the Spotify app. Add up to 60 characters, choose who sees it, then tap Share.
  • It stopped updating: Meta says the note updates in real time for up to 24 hours, or until 30 minutes after you stop playing. Posting a new note replaces your Spotify note.
  • To stop: tap your note > Stop sharing from Spotify.
  • Link or unlink Spotify: your profile > Menu > below Your app and media, tap App and website permissions > Spotify, then follow the instructions.

No music you can use? Add your own voiceover

Before you share a reel, Meta says you can record a voiceover over it:

  1. After recording a clip for your reel or choosing one from your gallery, tap Edit Video at the bottom.
  2. At the bottom, tap Voiceover.
  3. Tap or hold Record to record audio over the video (on Android, then tap Done), and finish sharing your reel.
  • You can record more than one voiceover clip, and use the slider bar to choose where it starts.
  • To remove a clip, tap the voiceover track, then tap Discard (Delete on iPad).
  • Meta says that on reels with licensed audio or another creator’s original audio, only your voiceover is attributed to you; on reels with only your original audio, the reel’s audio page is attributed to you and includes your voiceover.

How to know it worked

  • Your Reel or Story has audio you can use.
  • Other people’s posts play with sound, except tracks that are restricted.
