Instagram Removed Your Post? How to Request a Review (and What Happens Next)

Meta says it removes posts, comments and stories that go against Instagram’s Community Guidelines, but admits it doesn’t always get it right. If you think your content didn’t break the rules, you can request a review in most cases. Here are the three ways to do it, how long it can take, and what to do if you still disagree.

Quick answer

Open the notification about the removal and tap Ask for a review, or go to your profile > Menu > Help > Account Status > Removed content > Removed content, tap the content and choose Request a review. Meta says it may take up to 90 days to hear back, and your request may be closed before it’s reviewed. If Instagram finds it made a mistake, your content is reposted.

Does this match what you see?

  • Instagram told you a post, comment or story was removed for going against the Community Guidelines.
  • You think the removal was a mistake.
  • You asked for a review and haven’t heard back.

Meta gives two unlabeled versions of the steps: one where your profile picture is in the bottom right, and one where it’s on the left. Meta’s Account Status page confirms the profile-picture-on-the-left layout is the iPad app. The menus are the same apart from one label noted below.

  • Content judged to break the Community GuidelinesCheck this first

Meta says it removes content (posts, comments, stories) that goes against Instagram’s Community Guidelines, and that it uses both technology and people to review content.

Try these 60-second checks first

  • Find the notification Instagram sent about the removal; it explains why.
  • Our advice: request a review once, then check its status in Account Status.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Ask for a review from the notification

Safe & reversible2 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says you can request a review from the notification about your violation.

  1. Open the notification about the violation to see why your content was removed.
  2. Tap Ask for a review at the bottom.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Did it work? Your review request is submitted.

Fix 2: Request a review from Account Status

Safe & reversible3 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says Account Status shows content removed for going against the Community Standards, features you can no longer use, and lets you request a review.

  1. Go to your profile: tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right (or, if your profile picture is on the left, tap it there).
  2. Tap Menu in the top right, then below More info and support, tap Help.
  3. Tap Account Status, then Removed content (if your profile picture is on the left: Removed content and messaging issues).
  4. Tap Removed content, tap the content that was removed, then tap Request a review.
  5. Choose why you want another review, tap Continue, then Submit and Done.

Meta’s Account Status page also gives a shorter route to Account Status itself: in the app, your profile > Menu > below More info and support, tap Account Status; on a computer, More (bottom left) > Settings > Account Status.

Did it work? You can check the request’s status in Account Status.

Fix 3: Request a review from Support Inbox

Meta says the update about its decision is also in your Support Inbox, where you can request a review.

  1. Go to your profile, tap Menu in the top right, then below More info and support, tap Help.
  2. Tap Support Requests, then Violations.
  3. Open the update about the decision, tap See options at the bottom, then Request review and follow the on-screen steps.

Meta says you can check the status of your request at any time in Account Status or by tapping the violation in your Support Inbox.

Did it work? You can check the request’s status by tapping the violation in Support Inbox.

What Account Status shows, and why it matters

  • Removed content: posts, stories or comments removed for going against the Community Standards, which Meta says may lead to your account being taken down.
  • Features you can’t use: features you’ve lost access to, with options to resolve it, such as appealing removed content.
  • Recommendations Guidelines (professional accounts): whether your content or something on your profile (like your photo or bio) may stop all your content being recommended in places like Explore, Reels and Feed to people who don’t follow you. You can tap Edit or remove content, or Disagree with decision to have the review team look again.

How long a review takes, and what happens next

  • Meta says it uses technology and people around the world to review content again, and that some appeals are prioritized for human review, which can limit how many requests it can look at.
  • Because of this, it may take up to 90 days to hear back, and your request may be closed before it’s reviewed.
  • When a decision is made, you’ll get a push notification. If Instagram finds it made a mistake, it will let you know and your content will be reposted.
  • Meta says that for some types of content you can’t request a review, though it’s adding more options.

Still disagree? The Oversight Board

If you’ve requested a review and still don’t agree, Meta says you may be able to appeal to the Oversight Board. Not all decisions are eligible, and the board only selects a certain number of eligible appeals, so it may not choose yours.

Our advice: don’t pay anyone who says they can get your post restored. Only Instagram’s review process (and, in some cases, the Oversight Board) can do that. See Instagram scams.

How to know it worked

  • You’ve requested a review and can check its status in Account Status or Support Inbox.

Still not working? Your next steps

  1. Your whole account was disabled? See disabled or deleted accounts.
  2. Think someone else posted it from your account? See Instagram hacked.
