Quick answer
Close Instagram fully and reopen it, then update Instagram from the App Store or Google Play — Instagram itself notes that problems can happen when you’re on an old version that’s no longer supported. If it still crashes, restart your phone, free up storage, and clear the app’s cache (Android) or offload and reinstall it (iPhone). If only one feature crashes — Reels, the camera or messages — check that feature’s permissions first. When nothing works, report the problem from inside the app.
Does this match what you see?
- Instagram opens to the logo, then closes straight back to your home screen.
- The app crashes only when you open Reels, the camera, Stories or your messages.
- Instagram freezes and stops responding to taps, then closes or needs to be force-closed.
- You see "Couldn’t refresh feed" and posts won’t load, even though the app stays open.
- It started right after an Instagram update or a phone software update.
iPhone & iPadAndroid
Settings menus differ between iPhone models, Android phone makers and app versions. If a label below doesn’t match exactly, look for the closest equivalent.
Crash, freeze or won’t load? Why the difference matters
These three problems look similar but point to different fixes:
- Crash — Instagram closes by itself and you’re back on your home screen. Think app version, damaged files or storage.
- Freeze — the screen stops responding but the app is still open. Think memory, a stuck process or a heavy video. Force-closing usually helps.
- Won’t load — the app stays open but shows errors like "Couldn’t refresh feed". Think connection or a problem on Instagram’s side.
Why this happens: the possible causes
Crashes feel random, but the pattern of when Instagram crashes points to the likely cause. Find your row first.
| What happens | Possible cause | Do this first |
|---|---|---|
| Closes every time you open it | Outdated app, damaged install or an app/phone version mismatch | Fix 2 then Fix 5 |
| Crashes only in Reels, camera, Stories or DMs | A permission, storage or feature-specific glitch | Fix 4 |
| Freezes, then closes | Low storage, low memory or a stuck app process | Fix 1 and Fix 3 |
| Started right after an update | A bug in that version, or the phone needs a restart to finish updating | Fix 6 |
| You can’t install the latest update | Your phone’s software may be too old for the current Instagram version | Update your phone’s software if possible; otherwise use instagram.com in a browser |
| "Couldn’t refresh feed" but no crash | Connection problem or a temporary issue on Instagram’s side | See the error |
- An old or unsupported version of InstagramCheck this first
Instagram’s own help centre notes you may be using an old version of the app that’s no longer supported. Older versions can crash as Instagram’s servers and features change.
- Damaged temporary files (cache)Check this first
Apps store temporary data to load faster. If those files become corrupted, the app can crash as it tries to read them.
- Your phone is low on storageCheck this first
Instagram handles a lot of photos and video. Google notes that Android phones can start having issues when less than 10% of storage is free, and full storage causes similar trouble on iPhone.
- A missing permission for one featurePossible
If the camera, microphone or photo library permission is off or limited, the features that need it can fail — sometimes by closing the app.
- Phone software out of date or mid-updatePossible
New app versions are built for recent iOS and Android releases. A pending system update or a restart that hasn’t happened yet can cause instability.
- A temporary problem on Instagram’s sideLess likely
Occasionally Instagram has problems that affect many people at once. If friends see the same thing at the same time, it’s probably not your phone.
Try these 60-second checks first
- Is it just you? Ask someone nearby, or check whether Instagram works in a browser at instagram.com.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data and try again.
- Check your free storage: on iPhone Settings > General > iPhone Storage; on Android Settings > Storage.
- Turn off any VPN or "data saver" app for a moment to see if Instagram behaves differently.
How to fix it, step by step
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.
Fix 1: Close Instagram completely, then reopen it
A stuck app process is the simplest cause of freezing and crashing. Apple recommends closing an app only when it’s unresponsive — which is exactly this situation.
iPhone & iPad
- From the Home Screen, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause in the middle.
- Find the Instagram preview and swipe it up and off the screen.
- Wait a few seconds, then open Instagram again.
Android
- Open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Instagram (names vary by phone maker).
- Tap Force stop, then OK.
- Open Instagram again.
Did it work? Instagram opens to your feed and stays open while you scroll for a minute.
Fix 2: Update Instagram to the latest version
This is the fix Instagram itself points to: older versions may no longer be supported. Updates also contain crash fixes.
iPhone & iPad
- Open the App Store and tap your account icon at the top.
- Scroll to App Updates and tap Update next to Instagram if it’s listed.
- To stay current, turn on automatic updates in Settings > Apps > App Store > App Updates.
Android
- Open Google Play and tap your profile icon (top right).
- Tap Manage apps & device, then Updates available.
- Tap Update next to Instagram.
Did it work? Instagram no longer crashes at the point where it used to.
Fix 3: Free up storage space on your phone
Instagram needs room to cache photos and video. When storage is nearly full, apps that handle media are often the first to crash.
iPhone & iPad
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Follow any recommendations shown, or delete videos and apps you no longer need.
- Aim to leave a comfortable amount of free space, then reopen Instagram.
Android
- Open Settings > Storage (or Battery and device care > Storage on some phones).
- Remove large files, old downloads and apps you don’t use.
- Google notes problems can start when less than 10% of storage is free — try to stay above that.
Did it work? Instagram opens faster and the crashes stop.
Fix 4: Crashing in Reels, the camera, Stories or DMs? Check that feature’s permissions
When only one part of Instagram crashes, the app itself is usually fine. Features that use the camera, microphone or your photos can fail if access is switched off or limited.
iPhone & iPad
- Open Settings, scroll down and tap Instagram.
- Check Camera, Microphone and Photos (set Photos to full access or choose the photos you want to share).
- Close Instagram fully and try the feature again.
Android
- Open Settings > Apps > Instagram > Permissions.
- Allow Camera, Microphone and Photos and videos (or Files and media) as needed.
- Force stop Instagram and try the feature again.
If DMs crash only when you open one particular chat, the problem may be with a large photo or video in that conversation. Updating the app is the best next step.
Did it work? The feature that used to crash now opens normally.
Fix 5: Clear Instagram’s cache (Android) or offload and reinstall it (iPhone)
This removes damaged temporary files. On Android, clearing cache deletes temporary data only. On iPhone, offloading removes the app but keeps its documents and data, then you reinstall it fresh.
iPhone & iPad
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Instagram.
- Tap Offload App and confirm.
- Tap Reinstall App on the same screen, then open Instagram.
Android
- Open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Instagram.
- Tap Storage & cache > Clear cache.
- Don’t tap Clear storage yet — that permanently deletes the app’s data and signs you out.
- Reopen Instagram; it may be a little slow the first time.
Did it work? Instagram opens and stays open where it used to crash.
Fix 6: Restart your phone and install any system update
A restart clears memory and finishes pending updates. Apple and Google both recommend a restart and an up-to-date operating system when an app won’t open or keeps closing.
iPhone & iPad
- Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears (iPhone X and later), then drag it.
- Wait about 30 seconds, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
- Check Settings > General > Software Update and install any update.
Android
- Press and hold the power button and choose Restart. On some phones you press Power + Volume up instead. If the phone is frozen, Google suggests holding the power button for about 60 seconds.
- Check for a system update in Settings > System > System update (or Software update on some phones).
Did it work? Instagram stays stable after the restart.
Fix 7: Delete and reinstall Instagram
A clean install replaces any damaged app files. You’ll need to log in again, so make sure you know your password and can receive your login code if you use two-factor authentication.
iPhone & iPad
- Check you know your Instagram password and have access to your login code method.
- Touch and hold the Instagram icon > Remove App > Delete App.
- Reinstall Instagram from the App Store and log in.
Android
- Check you know your password and login code method.
- Touch and hold the Instagram icon > Uninstall.
- Reinstall from Google Play and log in.
Apple warns that deleting an app can remove data stored only in that app. Your posts, followers and messages are kept on Instagram’s servers, but unsent drafts on the phone may be lost.
Did it work? The freshly installed app opens and works without crashing.
Fix 8: Report the crash to Instagram from inside the app
If Instagram still crashes after all of the above, it may be a bug in the current version. Instagram’s help centre says technical problems can be reported from within the app, which helps get them fixed.
- If the app stays open long enough, go to your profile, open the menu (☰) and look for Help > Report a problem (names vary by version).
- Describe what you were doing when it crashed and which phone you use.
- Never include your password or login codes in a report.
Did it work? You see a confirmation that your report was sent.
Error messages and what they mean
These are the messages as people report seeing them. The exact wording on your screen can differ by app version, language and region, so match the meaning, not every word.
Couldn’t refresh feed- What it usually means
- Instagram couldn’t load new posts. This is usually a connection problem, a temporary issue on Instagram’s side, or an outdated app — not a crash.
- What to do
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, turn off any VPN, update the app (Fix 2) and try again later if others see it too.
Instagram keeps stopping- What it usually means
- Android’s message when an app crashes repeatedly.
Something went wrong- What it usually means
- A general error that can mean a connection problem, a temporary server issue or a problem with your session.
- What to do
- Close and reopen the app, check your connection, and update Instagram.
What not to do
- Don’t install a modified or "plus" version of Instagram, or download the app from a website instead of the App Store or Google Play. Unofficial versions can steal your login and may put your account at risk.
- Don’t tap Clear storage or reinstall before you know your password. Both sign you out.
- Don’t give your login details to anyone offering to "fix" your account. Crashes are fixed on your phone, not by a third party. Read how to spot recovery scams.
How to know it worked
- Instagram opens to your feed and stays open while you scroll, watch Reels and open messages.
- The feature that used to crash (camera, Stories, DMs) works at least twice in a row.
- You can post or send a test message without the app closing.
Still not working? Your next steps
- Use Instagram in a web browser at instagram.com while you wait for an app update.
- Keep automatic updates on; a fix may arrive in the next version.
- Report the problem from inside the app (Fix 8) or via Instagram’s help centre.
- If you can’t log in, or think someone else is using your account, use Instagram’s official login and hacked-account help (below) — not a crash fix.

Frequently asked questions
Why does Instagram keep crashing all of a sudden?
Possible reasons include an out-of-date app, nearly full storage, damaged temporary files, or a new update that needs a phone restart. Work through the fixes above in order; the update and restart steps are the quickest to try first.
Will I lose my photos if I reinstall Instagram?
Your posts, followers and messages are stored on Instagram’s servers, so they come back when you log in. Drafts saved only on your phone may be lost, so post or save them first.
Why does Instagram crash only when I open Reels or the camera?
One-feature crashes often come from a missing camera, microphone or photos permission, or low storage. Check permissions in your phone’s settings (Fix 4) before reinstalling.
Is Instagram down or is it just me?
If friends on different networks see the same problem at the same moment, it’s likely on Instagram’s side and you can only wait. If it’s only you, the fixes on this page apply.
How do I clear the Instagram cache on iPhone?
iPhone doesn’t offer a "clear cache" button for Instagram. The closest option is Offload App in Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Instagram, which keeps your documents and data, then Reinstall App.
Did this solve your problem?
Your answer stays in your browser — nothing is sent or stored. The “tell us” link opens your own email app.
