Can’t Log In to Instagram? Password, Username, Email and Identity Fixes

Most Instagram login problems come down to one of a few things: the wrong login details, a password reset email that doesn’t arrive, or losing the email or phone the account was set up with. Here are Instagram’s own steps for each, plus what to expect if you’re asked to confirm your identity.

Quick answer

Log in with the email, phone number or username on the account. If your password doesn’t work, tap Forgot password? on the login screen to get a login link; if your Instagram and Facebook accounts are linked, you can also reset through Facebook. No reset email? Check spam. Link not working? Request a new one, because the old email may have expired. If you think you were hacked, start at instagram.com/hacked.

Does this match what you see?

  • Your password isn’t accepted, or you can’t remember it.
  • You don’t get Instagram’s password reset email, or the link doesn’t work.
  • Instagram says your email address can’t be found, or sends a reset email for the wrong account.
  • You no longer have the email or phone number you signed up with.
  • Instagram asks for your ID or a video selfie before you can get back in.

Steps are from Instagram’s Help Center. Button names can differ slightly by device and language (for example Forgot password? is Forgotten password? in UK English). Meta is gradually moving people to Meta Accounts, so you may see Accounts Center or Meta Account settings.

  • The wrong login detailsCheck this first

Meta says you must use the username and password for the account you’re logging in to. You can also use an email or confirmed phone number on the account.

  • The reset email is in spam or has expiredCheck this first

Meta says reset emails can go to spam, and an older reset email may have expired.

  • The account was set up with a different or mistyped emailPossible

Meta says that if you can’t find your email when resetting, you may have registered with a different address or mistyped it when you signed up.

Try these 60-second checks first

  • Try logging in with your email or phone number instead of your username.
  • Enter phone numbers without zeros before the country code and without symbols.
  • Check your spam folder for Instagram’s email.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Log in with the right details

Safe & reversible2 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says you have to use the login details for the account you’re logging in to, and lists the options you can use.

  1. Open the Instagram app or go to instagram.com.
  2. Log in with one of: your username; a mobile phone number confirmed on the account (don’t add zeros before the country code, or any symbols); or an email address associated with your account.
  3. Enter your password and log in.
  4. If your Facebook and Instagram accounts are in the same Accounts Center and allowed to log in to each other, Meta says you can also enter your Facebook phone number or email and password on Instagram’s login screen.

Meta says that if two-factor authentication is on for your Facebook or Instagram account, you can’t use your Instagram login details to log in to Facebook on an unrecognized device.

Did it work? You’re logged in.

Fix 2: Forgot your password? Request a login link

Safe & reversible5 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says you can reset your password using your email address, phone number or username.

  1. On the login screen, tap or click Forgot password?
  2. Enter your username, email address or phone number, then choose Send login link.
  3. Choose OK and follow the on-screen steps. Meta says a link is sent to your email address or phone number to help you reset your password.
  4. In the app, if your Instagram and Facebook accounts are linked, you may also see Reset using Facebook after you tap Continue (more on this).

Meta says that if you can’t reset your password this way, go to instagram.com/hacked (external site, opens in a new tab) in a desktop or mobile browser to secure your account.

Did it work? You set a new password and can log in.

Fix 3: Reset email not arriving or not working

Safe & reversible5 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says a missing reset email might be in your spam folder, and that if a reset isn’t working, the previous email may have expired.

  1. Email not arriving: check your spam folder.
  2. If your Instagram and Facebook accounts are linked, reset your password through Facebook instead.
  3. Ask your email provider to make sure you can receive emails from the @instagram.com domain.
  4. Link not working: request a new password reset email. Meta says the previous one may have expired.
  5. In the email, choose reset your Instagram password. Meta says not to choose to log in from the email.

Meta says that if you mistyped your email address when you signed up, it isn’t able to give you access to that account.

Did it work? The reset email arrives and you can set a new password.

Fix 4: “Email can’t be found” or a reset email for the wrong account

Safe & reversible5 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says that if your email can’t be found, you may have registered with a different email address or mistyped it when you signed up. If a reset email goes to the wrong account, it’s likely that account was registered with a different email address.

  1. Try any other email addresses, phone numbers or usernames you may have used before.
  2. You can also reset your password by attempting to log in.
  3. In the Instagram app for Android or iPhone, tap Forgot password?, enter your username, email or phone, tap Continue, and if your Instagram and Facebook accounts are linked, tap Reset using Facebook.
  4. If your account is already in Accounts Center, Meta says you can change your password under Password and security in Account settings.

Meta says that if you can’t access the email you registered with and didn’t link your Instagram and Facebook accounts, it’s unable to give you access to the account.

Did it work? A reset email or login link reaches you for the right account.

Fix 5: Forgot your username

Safe & reversible2 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says you can still log in with the phone number or email on the account, then see your username at the top of your profile.

  1. Log in with your email address or phone number instead of your username.
  2. Forgot your password too? Reset it using your email or phone instead of your username (Forgot password).
  3. Once you’re in, your username is at the top of your profile.
  4. Think a hacker changed your username? Check for an email from Instagram saying your account information changed, and ask a friend to visit your profile and screenshot your current username. Then see Instagram hacked.

Did it work? You know your username and can log in.

Fix 6: Lost access to the email or phone you signed up with

May sign you out15 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says you can try to regain access to that email or phone, or update your account with new details once you’re logged in.

  1. Ask your email provider to help you get back into your email. Look for an option like Forgot your password? or Trouble signing in? on their login page. Meta says Instagram can’t help you get back into your email account.
  2. If you can still get into Instagram (with your email, phone number or by logging in with Facebook), change the email address or phone number on your account to one you can access.
  3. After you change your email, Meta says both the old and new addresses get a request to confirm or deny the change.

Meta says that if you can’t access the email you registered with and didn’t link your Instagram and Facebook accounts, it’s unable to give you access to the account. Our advice: be wary of anyone who claims they can get you in anyway.

Did it work? Your account has an email address and phone number you can access.

Fix 7: Asked to confirm your identity with ID or a video selfie

Safe & reversible10 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says it may ask for a copy of your ID to confirm the account is yours, to confirm or edit your age, to process payments, or to help prevent abuse such as scams or phishing. It may ask for a video selfie to confirm you’re a real person.

  1. ID: follow the on-screen instructions to upload it. Meta says in most cases you’ll have at least two attempts, and your ID won’t be visible to other users. You may temporarily lose access to your account during the review.
  2. Video selfie: you’ll turn your head in different directions. Meta says you won’t have access to your account while it reviews the selfie.
  3. If you pass, you may get an email at the secure email address you provided with a link to reset your password.
  4. If you don’t pass, you’ll get an email and may be able to resubmit your selfie in the Instagram app.

Meta says that if you choose not to confirm your identity, you may not be able to log back in, and in some cases, if you don’t pass the review, it may disable your account and delete its data. Our advice: only upload ID through Instagram’s own on-screen steps, never through a link someone sends you.

Did it work? For a video selfie, you get an email from Instagram about the review; for ID, follow what the app tells you.

Accounts showing on your login screen

Meta says you may see several accounts from Meta apps on Instagram’s login screen because they were recently logged in on that device, they’re in the same Accounts Center and allowed to log in to each other, or (on Android) you’re signed in to a Google account associated with them. A saved account lets you log in with one tap, though you may still need your password.

To remove one on your phone: on Instagram’s login screen, tap Settings at the top right, tap the account’s name, then tap Remove profile.

Disabled or deleted accounts

  • Disabled: Meta says you’ll see a message when you try to log in. If you think it was a mistake, you may be able to ask for a review by logging in and following the on-screen instructions.
  • No disabled message: Meta says it may be a login issue, someone may have got into your account (Instagram hacked), or the account may have been deleted by you or someone with your password.
  • Deleted: Meta says there’s no way to restore a deleted account. You can create a new one with the same email, but you may not get the same username.

How to know it worked

  • You can log in with your own password.
  • The email address and phone number on the account are ones you can access.

Still not working? Your next steps

  1. Think someone else is in your account? Follow Instagram hacked.
  2. Don’t pay anyone who offers to “recover” your account. See account recovery scams.

Frequently asked questions

Why am I not getting Instagram’s password reset email?

Meta says it may be in your spam folder, or you may have mistyped your email when you signed up. Check spam, request a new reset email (the old one may have expired), reset through Facebook if your accounts are linked, and ask your email provider to make sure you can get emails from @instagram.com.

Can I log in to Instagram with my Facebook password?

Meta says yes, as long as your Facebook and Instagram accounts are in the same Accounts Center and allowed to log in to each other: enter your Facebook phone number or email and password on Instagram’s login screen.

I lost the email I signed up with. Can Instagram give me access?

Meta says that if you can’t access the email you registered with and didn’t link your Instagram and Facebook accounts, it’s unable to give you access. Try to recover the email through your email provider first.

Can a deleted Instagram account be restored?

Meta says no. You can create a new account with the same email address, but you may not get the same username.

Why does Instagram want my ID?

Meta says it may ask for ID to confirm the account is yours, to confirm or edit your age, to process payments, or to help prevent scams or phishing. Your ID isn’t visible to other users, and in most cases you get at least two attempts.
