Quick answer
Meta says Reels isn’t available to everyone, and some accounts can see reels but not record them. If you can record but a reel won’t upload: try Wi-Fi and mobile data, restart your phone, update Instagram and your phone’s software, then reinstall the app. Reels can be up to 20 minutes, but Meta says reels over 3 minutes won’t be recommended to new audiences.
Does this match what you see?
- You can watch reels but there’s no way to record one.
- A reel is stuck uploading or fails to post.
- A reel over 3 minutes isn’t reaching new people.
- Others can’t remix, download or see your reel.

Why this happens: the possible causes
Why reels might not work for you (how common each is, is our estimate).
| What’s happening | Where to look |
|---|---|
| Can’t record reels | Not available to everyone |
| Reel won’t upload | Check your connection |
| Long reel, few new viewers | Length limits |
| Can’t remix or download | Remix and download settings |
| Not sharing to Facebook | Facebook sharing checks |
- Reels isn’t available on your accountCheck this first
Meta says Reels isn’t currently available to everyone, and some accounts may be able to see reels but won’t be able to record them.
- A weak connection or app problemCheck this first
Meta’s troubleshooting advice is to try Wi-Fi and mobile data, restart, update and reinstall.
- Privacy or reel settingsPossible
Meta says who can see, remix and download your reels follows your account’s privacy settings and your reel settings.
Try these 60-second checks first
- Try both Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Update Instagram and your phone’s software.
How to fix it, step by step
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.
Fix 1: Can’t record reels? It may not be available to you yet
Meta says Reels isn’t currently available to everyone. Some accounts may be able to see reels, but won’t be able to record them.
- Our tip: update Instagram to the latest version, then check again. (Meta’s general troubleshooting advice is to always run the latest app.)
- If you still can’t record, Reels may not be available on your account yet. Meta also says a feature may not be available to everyone yet in its general troubleshooting advice.
Our advice: don’t install modified versions of Instagram or use services that promise to “unlock” Reels. They can put your account at risk.
Did it work? You can start a reel.
Did Fix 1 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 1. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Fix 2: Reel won’t upload? Check your connection
Meta says to try Instagram on both Wi-Fi and mobile data to see whether the problem is a weak connection.
- On a phone or tablet, switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or the other way round, and try again. On a computer, check your internet connection.
- Our tip: long reels are large files, so a strong Wi-Fi connection helps.
Did it work? Your reel finishes uploading.
Did Fix 2 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 2. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Fix 3: Restart, then update Instagram and your phone
Meta says to always try restarting your phone or tablet first, and to make sure you’re running the latest Instagram app and the latest version of your phone or tablet’s software. It says some older app versions are no longer supported.
- Restart your phone or tablet.
- Update Instagram from the App Store (external site, opens in a new tab) or Google Play (external site, opens in a new tab).
- Update your phone or tablet’s software.
Did it work? You can post your reel.
Did Fix 3 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 3. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Fix 4: Delete and reinstall Instagram
If restarting and checking your connection don’t help, Meta says to delete and reinstall Instagram. It says your photos and profile info are saved by Instagram.
iPhone & iPad
- Tap and hold the Instagram icon, tap Remove App, then reinstall from the App Store and log in.
Android
- Go to Settings > Apps > Instagram > Uninstall, then reinstall from Google Play and log in.
Warning: Meta says reel drafts are saved on your device and are lost if you uninstall the app. Share or save any drafts you want to keep first (see Reel drafts). Our advice: also make sure you know your password and can get your login code before you reinstall.
Did it work? Reels work after you log back in.
Did Fix 4 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 4. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Fix 5: Still not working? Report it
Meta says that if these steps don’t help, it could be a bug, and you can report it so Instagram can investigate.
- Follow Instagram’s report a technical problem (external site, opens in a new tab) steps.
Did it work? Your report is sent.
Did Fix 5 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 5. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Reel won’t share to Facebook?
Meta says to first make sure both the Instagram and Facebook apps are up to date and your internet connection is stable. Then work through these steps in the Instagram app:
- Check sharing is on: your profile > Menu (top right) > Accounts Center > Sharing across profiles. Below Share from, select your account and make sure Your Instagram reels is turned on.
- Check your Facebook account is added: Accounts Center > Accounts. If your Facebook account isn’t listed, add it before you share again (see Facebook and Instagram not linking).
- Refresh the connection: in Sharing across profiles, turn Your Instagram reels off, then back on.
- Check for restrictions: your profile > Menu > below More info and support, tap Account Status. Meta says a restricted account may not be able to share reels to Facebook.
- Restart both apps: close Instagram and Facebook completely, reopen them and try again.
- Log out and back in to both apps. Our advice: make sure you know both passwords and can get your login codes first.
- Still failing? Your profile > Menu > below More info and support, tap Help > Report a problem.
Meta says it’s gradually updating people to Meta Accounts, so you may see Meta Account settings instead of Accounts Center.
Reel drafts: where they are and why they disappear
- Meta says drafts are saved on your device. You can’t open a draft on another device, even if you log in to your account there, and uninstalling the app deletes your drafts.
- Drafts are kept until you share or delete them, and there’s no limit to how many you can save.
- Save a draft: on the reel you’re recording, tap Next, then Next again, then Save draft at the bottom.
- Find your drafts: go to your profile, tap Reels below your profile info, then Drafts.
- Keep a copy in your camera roll: tap Next, swipe up to edit, swipe left to right, then tap Save. To edit it later, start a new reel and choose the video from your camera roll (tap Recents > Videos to filter).
- Meta says downloading your reel won’t save music you added from Instagram’s music library.
How long a reel can be (and the 3-minute rule)
- Meta says you can record one or multiple clips adding up to 20 minutes. The progress bar at the top shows how long you’ve recorded.
- Meta says reels over 3 minutes won’t be recommended to new audiences. Our note: if you want a reel to reach people who don’t follow you, keep it to 3 minutes or less.
Edit, pin, archive, hide or delete a posted reel
Meta says that after posting, you can open your reel, tap Options in the bottom right, then Manage (app only, not on computers). From there you can:
- Edit the caption and location.
- Turn off commenting.
- Pin to your reels, to keep it at the top of the Reels tab on your profile.
- Hide likes, so others can’t see how many people liked it.
- Add to profile grid, to show the reel on your profile’s main grid (Meta lists this for Android and iPhone).
- Archive, to move it to your archive.
Tap Sharing options in the bottom right to Share, Copy link or Download the reel. In Instagram Lite, tap Options to share, copy the link or save, and to edit or turn off commenting.
Delete a reel (or several at once)
- One reel: open it, tap or click Options above it, then Delete, and Delete again to confirm.
- Several at once (Android, iPhone and iPad): your profile (on iPad, your profile picture on the left) > Menu > below How you use Instagram, tap Your activity > below Content you shared, tap Posts. Tap Select, pick the posts (sort by newest to oldest or filter by All dates), then tap Delete and confirm.
- Several at once (mobile browser): tap your profile picture in the bottom right > Settings at the top > Your Activity > Photos and videos > Reels. Tap Select, pick the reels (use Sort & Filter if you like), then tap Delete and confirm.
- Several at once (computer): click Menu in the bottom left > Your Activity > Photos and Videos > Reels at the top. Click Select in the top right, select the reels (use Sort & Filter to narrow them down), then click Delete at the bottom and confirm.
- Our tip: if you only want to hide a reel, archive it instead. Meta says archived posts are hidden from your profile and from your followers and others on Instagram. Meta also has a page on restoring content you recently deleted (external site, opens in a new tab).
- Our note: if you shared the reel to Facebook, check Facebook too. Meta has separate help for deleting a reel you shared to Facebook.
Reel view or like count looks wrong?
- Meta says the number in the bottom left of each reel on your profile is video plays: how many times your reel starts to play. It doesn’t include replays.
- If you recommend your reel to Facebook, Meta says play and like counts may include Facebook interactions.
- Deleting a comment on a reel shared to Facebook removes it from both Instagram and Facebook.
- Profile count vs Insights “Views”: in reel Insights, Meta defines Views as the number of times your reel starts to play or replay, so it includes replays, unlike the plays count on your profile grid. Our note: that’s why the two numbers can differ.
- Other reel insights: Watch time (total time played, including replays), Average watch time (watch time divided by initial views), Viewers (unique accounts that saw it on screen; estimated and in development) and Follows (accounts that followed you after viewing it). Open the reel from the Reels tab on your profile and tap or click View insights; Meta says reel insights also appear in your overall account insights.
- No insights for an old reel? Meta says reel insights are available for reels posted on and after May 14, 2021, for up to two years after the reel was published, and only on a public account.
- Share count looks low? Meta says the shares number (reshares to stories or in direct messages) may not be accurate if your reel was shared before reshare counts were enabled.
- In the app: tap your profile picture in the bottom right (on iPad, on the left) > Reels below your profile info, then tap a reel to see likes, comments and shares. On a computer: click your profile picture on the left > Reels, then hover over a reel.
Why people can’t remix or download your reel
- Private account: Meta says no one can record a reel using your original audio or text, or remix your reel.
- Public account: Meta says anyone can remix or download your reel unless you turn off remixing or turn off reel downloads, either in your account settings or on individual reels.
- When you share a reel on Android or iPhone, Meta says you can tap More options to choose whether your reel can be used as a template or downloaded.
- Under 18 with a public account? Meta says downloading your reels is off by default, and you can turn it on at any time.
- Meta says downloaded reels include an Instagram watermark, your username and audio attribution, and can’t be used for commercial purposes.
Turn reel downloads on or off
- For all your reels: go to your profile > Menu (top right) > Sharing and reuse (on iPad, under How others can interact with you), then use the toggle next to Downloads, below Allow people to share externally.
- For one posted reel: open the reel > Options > Manage > Turn off downloading (or Turn on downloading).
- While posting: tap Next > More options, scroll to Allow people to download your reels, toggle it, choose all reels or just this one, then tap Back and Share.
- Meta says turning downloads off doesn’t affect copies people already downloaded, and Instagram can’t control what people do with reels after they download them. Our advice: if a reel is personal, keep your account private or turn downloads off before you post.
- Downloaded reel has no sound? See Instagram music not available.
Who can see and share your reels
- Public account: Meta says anyone on Instagram can see and share your reels, including in Feed, the Reels viewer, Explore, and audio, effect and hashtag pages.
- Private account: only your approved followers can see and share your reels, and when someone shares one, only your followers can see it.
- Your shared reels appear in the Reels section of your profile.
- On Facebook: if you share your reels to Facebook, Meta says who sees them depends on your Facebook audience settings. If you haven’t chosen one, a public Instagram account defaults to Public and a private one to Friends on Facebook.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my reel’s view count different in Insights?
Meta says Insights Views count every time your reel starts to play or replay, while the plays number on your profile grid doesn’t include replays. So the Insights number can be higher.
Why won’t my Instagram reel share to Facebook?
Meta says to update both apps, check your connection, and check that Your Instagram reels is turned on in Accounts Center > Sharing across profiles, and that your Facebook account is added in Accounts Center. A restricted account may not be able to share; check Account Status.
How do I stop people downloading my Instagram reels?
Meta says to go to your profile > Menu > Sharing and reuse and turn off Downloads, or turn off downloading on a single reel from Options > Manage. Copies already downloaded aren’t affected. Private accounts’ reels can’t be downloaded.
How do I put my reel on my Instagram profile grid?
Meta says to open the reel, tap Options in the bottom right, then Manage > Add to profile grid. Meta lists this option for Android and iPhone.
Do Instagram reel plays include replays?
No. Meta says video plays count how many times your reel starts to play and don’t include replays. If you recommend the reel to Facebook, counts may include Facebook interactions.
Where did my Instagram reel drafts go?
Meta says drafts are saved on your device, so you can’t see them on another phone, and uninstalling the app deletes them. On the same device, find them at your profile > Reels > Drafts.
How do I crop or rotate an Instagram reel?
Meta says to tap Edit video, select the clip, tap Crop in the bottom right, then pinch to scale or crop, or pinch and rotate your fingers to rotate it. You can undo or redo up to 20 actions.
Why can’t I make reels on Instagram?
Meta says Reels isn’t currently available to everyone, and some accounts can see reels but can’t record them. Our tip: update the app, and if you still can’t, it may not be available on your account yet.
How long can an Instagram reel be?
Meta says up to 20 minutes, in one clip or several. Reels over 3 minutes won’t be recommended to new audiences.
Why can’t people download or remix my reel?
On a private account, Meta says no one can remix your reel or use its original audio. On a public account, check you haven’t turned off remixing or reel downloads in your account settings or on that reel.
Why can’t my friend see a reel I shared?
If your account is private, Meta says only your approved followers can see your reels, even when someone shares them.
