Quick answer
First check your sent requests: you may already have a request waiting. If not, one of you may have hit Facebook’s limit of 5,000 friends: Meta says you can turn on professional mode to connect with more people, unfriend someone, or follow them instead. One of you may also allow requests only from friends of friends: ask them to send you the request. If you’ve blocked them, unblock them first. If Facebook has blocked you from sending friend requests, see Meta’s page on that block and our Facebook jail guide.
Does this match what you see?
- There’s no Add Friend button on someone’s profile, or only Follow or Message.
- You send a request but nothing happens, or it disappears.
- You can’t accept a friend request someone sent you.
- Facebook says you’ve reached a limit, or you’re blocked from sending requests.

Meta gives the same reasons for every version of Facebook: the apps, Lite and browsers.
Why this happens: the possible causes
Meta lists these reasons. Some are on your side, some on theirs.
| What’s going on | Whose side | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| A request is already pending, or you’re already friends | Either | Fix 1 |
| Someone has reached 5,000 friends | Yours or theirs | Fix 2 |
| Requests only from friends of friends | Yours or theirs | Fix 3 |
| The request was deleted | Either | Fix 4 |
| You blocked them | Yours | Fix 5 |
| You’ve been blocked from sending requests | Yours | Fix 6 |
- A request is already pendingCheck this first
Meta says you may already have sent them a request. You can check your sent requests.
- The 5,000-friend limitPossible
Meta says you can have up to 5,000 friends, and you won’t be able to accept a friend request from someone who has 5,000 friends.
- A friends-of-friends privacy settingCheck this first
Meta says either of you may have set your privacy settings to get friend requests only from friends of friends.
- A blockPossible
You can’t send a request to someone you’ve blocked. Facebook can also block you from sending friend requests.
Try these 60-second checks first
- Open your sent friend requests (external site, opens in a new tab) and look for the person.
- Check whether you’re already friends: search their name in your friends list.
- Ask the other person whether they can send you a request instead.
How to fix it, step by step
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.
Fix 1: Check whether a request is already pending
Meta’s first reason is the simplest: they haven’t accepted your request yet, or you’re already friends.
- Open your sent requests: facebook.com/friends/requests?outgoing=1 on a computer or phone browser, as Meta links it. In the app, look in Friends for your sent requests.
- If your request is there, it’s still waiting for them. Give them time, or let them know another way.
- If they’re already in your friends list, there’s nothing to add.
Did it work? You know whether a request is pending or you’re already friends.

Fix 2: Hit the 5,000-friend limit? Your options
Meta says you can have up to 5,000 friends. It also works the other way: you can’t accept a request from someone who already has 5,000 friends.
- Turn on professional mode (pro mode). Meta says this lets you connect with more than 5,000 friends. See Meta’s steps to turn on professional mode (external site, opens in a new tab).
- Unfriend someone you no longer keep in touch with, then send the new request. Meta’s steps are on its unfriend page (external site, opens in a new tab).
- Follow them instead, if they’ve turned following on. Meta says you’ll still see their public posts. See follow someone (external site, opens in a new tab).
- If they have 5,000 friends, they’d need to unfriend someone or turn on professional mode. You can follow them if they’ve turned following on.
Did it work? The request goes through, or you’re following them instead.

Fix 3: No Add Friend button? Check the friends-of-friends setting
If someone only accepts requests from friends of friends, and you have no friends in common, you can’t send them one.
- Ask the person to send you the request instead. Meta suggests this.
- If your setting is the problem (people can’t add you), change who can send you friend requests in your privacy settings (external site, opens in a new tab). Meta’s Privacy Checkup also lets you review who can send you friend requests.
- If you only see Follow or Message, the person may also have following turned on, so you can follow them in the meantime.
Did it work? The request is sent from one side or the other.
Did Fix 3 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 3. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Fix 4: Request disappeared? It may have been deleted
Meta lists a deleted request as a reason you can’t add someone.
- Send them a new friend request (Meta’s steps (external site, opens in a new tab)), or ask them to send you one.
- If they deleted it on purpose, respect that, and don’t keep resending.
Did it work? A new request is pending, or they’ve sent you one.
Did Fix 4 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 4. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Fix 5: You blocked them? Unblock first
You can’t send a friend request to someone you’ve blocked.
- Follow Meta’s steps to unblock someone (external site, opens in a new tab).
- Then send them a friend request.
Did it work? The Add Friend button appears on their profile.
Did Fix 5 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 5. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Fix 6: Blocked from sending friend requests
Facebook can block you from sending friend requests. This is a limit on your account, not a setting on theirs.
- Read Meta’s page on why you may be blocked from sending friend requests (external site, opens in a new tab).
- As general advice, stop sending requests for now. Repeating them is unlikely to help.
- For how temporary blocks and longer restrictions work, and how to check your status, see Facebook jail: restricted account.
- When you can send requests again, add people you know personally. Meta says you can add people you know personally as friends.
Did it work? You can send friend requests again without a warning.
Did Fix 6 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 6. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
A note on who to add
Meta says you can add people you know personally as friends. In our experience, sending lots of requests quickly, especially to people you don’t know, is the kind of activity that can lead to a block. To keep up with public figures or people you don’t know, follow them instead.
Error messages and what they mean
Meta’s page doesn’t quote the on-screen messages, so we describe them. Match the meaning to what you see.
No Add Friend button on a profile- What it usually means
- Possibly a pending request, a friends-of-friends setting, the friend limit or a block (our reading of Meta’s reasons).
A message about a friend limit- What it usually means
- You or they have 5,000 friends.
- What to do
- Fix 2
A message that you can’t send friend requests right now- What it usually means
- Facebook has blocked you from sending requests for now.
- What to do
- Fix 6
How to know it worked
- Your request is pending, or you’re now friends.
- Or you’re following them, if adding isn’t possible.
Still not working? Your next steps
- If you can’t post, comment or message either, see Facebook jail: restricted account.
- If the app itself misbehaves, see Facebook not working.

Frequently asked questions
Why can’t I add someone as a friend on Facebook?
Meta lists six reasons: a request is already pending or you’re already friends; one of you has 5,000 friends; one of you only accepts requests from friends of friends; the request was deleted; you’ve blocked them; or you’ve been blocked from sending friend requests.
What is the Facebook friend limit?
Meta says you can have up to 5,000 friends. Turning on professional mode lets you connect with more than 5,000.
Why can’t I accept a friend request?
Meta says you won’t be able to accept a friend request from someone who has 5,000 friends. You also can’t add more friends if you’ve reached 5,000 yourself.
How do I see friend requests I’ve sent?
Meta links your sent requests at facebook.com/friends/requests?outgoing=1.
Why is there only a Follow button?
Meta doesn’t say exactly, but likely reasons are a friends-of-friends setting or the friend limit. If they have following turned on, you can follow them to see their public posts.
