Can’t Create a Facebook Account? Sign-Up Steps and Fixes

Creating a Facebook account takes a few minutes, but sign-up can stall on your phone number: Facebook may not recognize it, or say an account already exists with it. And if you reuse the same (or a similar) number and password, Meta says Facebook logs you into your old account instead. Here are Meta’s sign-up steps for each device and its fixes for each problem.

Quick answer

On a computer, go to facebook.com > Create new account, enter your name, email or mobile number, password, date of birth and gender, then Sign up and confirm your email or number. You must be at least 13. Number not recognized? Check it and add your country code before the number. Number already in use? Meta says you may need to wait a few days, or sign up with an email instead. If you use the same (or a similar) number and password as an existing account, Meta says you’ll be logged into that account. Log out of any existing accounts before you start.

Does this match what you see?

  • Facebook says your mobile number isn’t recognized.
  • Facebook says an account already exists with your number.
  • Signing up logs you into an old account instead.
  • You don’t have a mobile number to sign up with.

Steps come from Meta’s help pages for each device, including iPad, Facebook Lite and mobile browsers.

Why this happens: the possible causes

Start with the line that matches what you see.

Try these 60-second checks first

  • Log out of any existing Facebook accounts first.
  • Include your country code before your number.
  • Have your email or phone with you to confirm it.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Sign up (Meta’s steps)

Safe & reversible5 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

To finish creating your account, Meta says you need to confirm your email or mobile number.

iPhone & iPad

  1. Open the Facebook app and tap Create new account (on an iPad, Sign up for Facebook), then Get started.
  2. Enter your first and last name, date of birth and gender.
  3. Enter your mobile number, or tap Use your email address.
  4. Create a password you’ll remember, then tap Sign up.
  5. Confirm your email or mobile number to finish (Fix 2).

Android

  1. Open the Facebook app and tap Create new Facebook account, then Next.
  2. Enter the name you go by in everyday life, your date of birth and gender, tapping Next each time.
  3. Enter your mobile number, or tap Sign up with email address.
  4. Create a password, tap Next, then Sign up.
  5. Confirm your email or mobile number to finish (Fix 2).

Computer (browser)

  1. Go to facebook.com and click Create new account.
  2. Enter your name, email or mobile number, password, date of birth and gender.
  3. Click Sign up.
  4. Confirm your email or mobile number to finish (Fix 2).

In Facebook Lite: Create new account > Next, then your name, mobile number (or Sign up with email), date of birth, gender and password, then Sign up. In a mobile browser, go to facebook.com/r.php and fill in the same details. Then confirm your email or number: see Fix 2.

Did it work? Your email or number is confirmed and your new profile opens.

Fix 2: Confirm your email or mobile number (don’t skip this)

Safe & reversible3 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says you need to confirm that you own the email or number you signed up with. Until you do, you may not be able to use your account, and an unconfirmed account may be deleted after one year of inactivity.

  1. Mobile number: when you log in, enter the code from the text message in the Confirm box.
  2. Email in the app (iPhone, iPad, Android, Lite): enter the code from the email you got when you signed up.
  3. Email on a computer or mobile browser: click or tap the link in that email.
  4. Can’t find the email? Meta says check your junk folder (in Gmail, also the Social tab), make sure you entered the right email (if not, change it and send the email again), or try signing up with a mobile number instead.

No code? Meta’s fixes, from the Account confirmation screen in the app (on a computer or mobile browser, go to facebook.com/confirmemail.php): check the number you entered and, if it’s wrong, tap Change phone number (computer: Update contact info; mobile browser: Add Another Number); tap Send SMS Again (mobile browser: Send Code Again); or tap Confirm by email to use an email address instead (computer: Update contact info > add your email). For an email code, tap Send email again. More fixes for codes that won’t arrive: login code not received. Don’t skip this step: Meta says an account that’s unconfirmed and not used at all for a year after creation may be disabled and deleted.

Did it work? Facebook no longer asks you to confirm, and your account works normally.

Fix 3: “Mobile number isn’t recognized”? Check it and add the country code

Safe & reversible2 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says to make sure you typed the number correctly, and to enter your country code before it (Meta’s example: 91 for India).

  1. Check every digit of the number.
  2. Put your country code in front: for example 1 for the US or Canada, 44 for the UK, 61 for Australia (our examples).
  3. Still not working? Our suggestion: sign up with an email address instead (Fix 1).

Did it work? Facebook accepts the number and sends a code.

Fix 4: “An account already exists with this number”? Wait, or use email

Safe & reversible5 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says that if an account already exists with your mobile number, you may need to wait a few days to try adding it to your account.

  1. Is it your old account? If you forgot the password, reset it (external site, opens in a new tab) and log in instead (see can’t log in).
  2. Don’t have that number any more? Meta has steps to get back into your account without it.
  3. Want a new account? Sign up with an email now. Meta says you may need to wait a few days before you can add the number to an account: see add a phone number.

Did it work? You’ve signed in to your existing account, or created a new one with email.

Fix 5: Signing up with email? “Already in use”, “invalid” or a broken link

Safe & reversible5 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says you can’t create a new account with an email that’s already tied to an existing account, and lists fixes for each email problem.

  1. “Existing account with this email”: check you typed it correctly. If it’s your account and you forgot the password, request a new password (external site, opens in a new tab) instead.
  2. Shared email (for example, with a family member who already has Facebook on it): Meta suggests creating a free email account for yourself, for example with Yahoo! or Gmail.
  3. “Email is invalid”: make sure you entered it correctly.
  4. Signed up with the wrong email? iPhone or iPad: open the Facebook app, tap Change Email Address, enter your correct email and tap Submit. Android and Facebook Lite: the same, but tap Continue. Computer: go to facebook.com/confirmemail.php, click Update Contact Info, enter an email (or mobile number) you have access to and click Add. Mobile browser: go to facebook.com/confirmemail.php, tap I Didn’t Receive the Code > Add Another Email Address, enter your correct email and tap Add (tap Remove to delete the old one). Meta says that when you confirm the new email, it replaces the wrong one. Use a secure email that only you can access.
  5. Error when you click the confirmation link: try logging in with the email you signed up with. If you can’t, copy the link from the email and paste it into your browser.
  6. Still stuck? Try signing up with a mobile number instead (Fix 1).

Did it work? You’ve created the account, or signed in to the one you already had.

Fix 6: Signing up logs you into your old account?

Safe & reversible2 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says that if you try to sign up with the same or similar phone number or email and password as an account you already created, you’ll be logged into that existing account. Meta also says it’s against its Community Standards to keep more than one personal account.

  1. Log out of any existing accounts first: Meta says to do this before creating an account.
  2. Our tip: use a different email or number and a new password for the new account.

Did it work? You reach the sign-up form and create a separate account.

Fix 7: Have Instagram? Create Facebook with it

Safe & reversible3 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

Meta says you can use an existing Instagram account to create a Facebook account. Both use the same login information and are added to the same Accounts Center.

  1. Open the Facebook app on a phone where you’ve logged into Instagram before. Your Instagram account(s) should appear on the login screen.
  2. Tap the Instagram account to use, then Yes, continue (or Continue without Instagram).
  3. Choose Sync this info to sync your name and profile picture, or Not now and enter your name.
  4. Select your gender, tap Next, review the terms, then tap I agree.

You can manage profile syncing later in Accounts Center. To link an existing Facebook account instead, see Facebook and Instagram not linking.

Did it work? Your new Facebook account opens, linked to Instagram.

How to know it worked

  • You can log in to your new account.
  • Your email or phone number shows as confirmed.

Still not working? Your next steps

  1. Already have an account but can’t get in? See can’t log in to Facebook.
  2. Need to change the email or number later? See change your email or phone number.

Frequently asked questions

I used the wrong email to create my Facebook account. How do I fix it?

On iPhone, iPad or Android, Meta says to open the Facebook app, tap Change Email Address, enter your correct email and tap Submit (on Android or Facebook Lite, tap Continue). On a computer, go to facebook.com/confirmemail.php, click Update Contact Info, add an email or mobile number you have access to, and click Add. In a mobile browser, go to the same page, tap I Didn’t Receive the Code, then Add Another Email Address. Then confirm the new email. The new email then replaces the wrong one. If your account is already set up, change your email in Accounts Center instead.

I got a Facebook confirmation email for an account I didn’t create. What do I do?

Meta sends confirmation emails when someone creates a new account or adds a new email to an account. If you didn’t create the account, Meta says to click the link at the bottom of the email to let it know this wasn’t you. Meta also says that if someone else used your email, it won’t be added to their account unless it’s confirmed. Our advice: don’t click the confirm link itself, and don’t share any code from the email.

Can I have two Facebook accounts?

Meta says it’s against its Community Standards to maintain more than one personal account. If you sign up with the same or similar email or phone and password as an existing account, you’ll be logged into that account.

Why can’t I sign up with my email?

Meta says you can’t create a new account with an email that’s already tied to an existing account. Check it’s typed correctly, reset the password if it’s your account, or use another email or a mobile number.

I didn’t get the code to confirm my new Facebook account. What now?

Meta says to check the number on the Account confirmation screen (or facebook.com/confirmemail.php), change it if it’s wrong, tap Send SMS Again, or confirm with an email instead.

What happens if I don’t confirm my Facebook account?

Meta says you may not be able to use your account until you confirm your email or mobile number, and an unconfirmed account may be deleted after one year of inactivity.

How old do you have to be to create a Facebook account?

Meta says you must be at least 13 years old to create a Facebook profile.

Why does Facebook say an account already exists with my number?

The number is already on an account. Meta says you may need to wait a few days to add it, or you can sign up with an email instead. If it’s your account, reset the password and log in.

Can I create a Facebook account without a phone number?

Yes. Meta says you can create an account with your email instead.

Why did Facebook log me into my old account when I tried to sign up?

Meta says signing up with the same or similar phone number and password as an existing account logs you into that account. Log out first; our tip is to use different details for the new account.
