Facebook Restricted List: Hide Posts From a Friend (Like Your Boss) Without Unfriending

Want to stay friends with someone on Facebook, like your boss, without them seeing everything you post? Meta’s Restricted list is built for that: they’ll only see your public posts and info, and posts you tag them in. Here’s how it works, how to add or remove someone, and what Facebook’s other friend lists do.

Quick answer

Add them to your Restricted list: go to their profile, click Friends > Edit Friend List > Restricted. Meta says they’ll then see only your Public posts and info, and posts you tag them in, not posts shared with Friends. To remove someone, on a computer go to Friends > Custom Lists > Restricted and click Remove.

Does this match what you see?

  • You want a friend (such as your boss or a relative) to stop seeing your everyday posts.
  • You don’t want to unfriend or block them.
  • You’re not sure what the Restricted list does.

Meta’s Restricted list page has steps for a computer, iPhone, iPad and Android. Meta says to see all your lists, you need to open Facebook on a computer.

Why this happens: the possible causes

What each audience means for someone on your Restricted list, according to Meta.

What a restricted friend can see
You post or tag…Can a restricted friend see it?Meta’s example
A post shared with PublicYesYour boss can see it
A post shared with FriendsNoYour boss won’t see it
A post or photo you tag them inYesYour boss can see it
Private posts or profile infoNo, unless you tag them or share publicly
  • Restricted hides Friends-only posts and profile info, not public onesCheck this first

Meta says restricted friends still see your public information, public posts and posts you tag them in.

Try these 60-second checks first

  • Check the audience before you post: Public posts are still visible to restricted friends.
  • Don’t tag a restricted friend in posts you want to keep from them.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: What the Restricted list does

Safe & reversible1 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says your Restricted list is for people you’ve added as a friend but may not want to share with, like your boss.

  1. They’ll see your public information and posts you tag them in, but not your private posts.
  2. Post with Public as the audience: they can see it.
  3. Post with Friends as the audience: they won’t see it.
  4. Tag them in a post or photo: they can see it.

You stay friends. Meta’s help doesn’t say whether they’re notified when you add them to Restricted.

Did it work? You know which of your posts they can see.

Fix 2: Add someone to your Restricted list

These are Meta’s steps to add a friend to Restricted.

iPhone & iPad

  1. Go to their profile and tap Friends.
  2. Tap Edit friend lists, tap Restricted, then tap Done.

Android

  1. Go to their profile and tap Friends.
  2. Tap Edit friend list, then tap Restricted.

Computer (browser)

  1. Go to their profile.
  2. Click Friends on their profile.
  3. Select Edit Friend List.
  4. Select Restricted.

These are Meta’s Restricted-list steps for each device.

Did it work? They appear on your Restricted list.

Fix 3: See or remove people on your Restricted list

Safe & reversible2 minComputer (browser)

Meta says you view and edit your Restricted list from Friends on a computer.

  1. From your Feed, click Friends in the left menu (under See more if needed).
  2. Click Custom Lists, then Restricted.
  3. To remove someone, click Remove next to their name.

Did it work? They’re no longer on the list.

Fix 4: Close Friends, Acquaintances and custom lists

Safe & reversible3 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says friend lists help you post to specific people and see updates from specific groups. You already have three built-in lists, and can create your own.

  1. Close Friends: people you may want to share with exclusively. To add someone, go to their profile, click Friends > Edit Friend List > Close friends, then Exit (on iPhone or iPad: Edit Friend Lists > Close Friends > Done; on Android: Edit Friend List > Close friends).
  2. Acquaintances: people you might want to share less with. Choose Friends except Acquaintances in the audience selector when you post. Meta says no one is notified when you add them to this list.
  3. Add someone to Acquaintances on a computer: from your Feed, click Friends in the left menu (under See more if needed) > Custom lists > Acquaintances > Add/Remove (top right). Tick the friends you want (or use Search for a friend), then click Save. To remove someone, click Remove next to their name.
  4. Add or remove someone in the app: tap Search, find the person, then tap Friends on their profile > Edit friend lists > Acquaintances > Done (iPhone and iPad). On Android: Friends > Edit friend list > Acquaintances, then tap Edit friend list in the top left to go back to their profile.
  5. Create a custom list: Meta says you need to log into Facebook on a computer, even if you use the app. Then: Friends > Custom Lists > Create List, enter a name and click Confirm, then Add Friends. Meta says you can use a list to post an update for specific people, like coworkers.
  6. Rename a list you created: Meta says to use Facebook on a computer, even if you use the app or a mobile browser. Go to Friends > Custom Lists > choose the list > Options (top right) > Edit List Name, type the new name and click Save. Meta says Close Friends, Acquaintances and Restricted can’t be renamed.
  7. To see your lists, Meta says to open Facebook on a computer: Friends > Custom Lists. A friend can be on more than one list.

Did it work? Your friends are organized the way you want.

Fix 5: Need them to see nothing at all?

May sign you out2 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Restricted still lets someone see your public posts and posts you tag them in. If that’s not enough, you have stronger options.

  1. Unfriend them: see how to unfriend someone. Meta says they aren’t notified.
  2. Block them: they can’t see your posts, tag you or start a conversation with you. Blocking also unfriends them; Meta notes it may not stop all contact, and other profiles they have must be blocked separately. See block a profile.
  3. After unfriending, limit what non-friends can see: see lock your Facebook profile.

Did it work? They can no longer see what you don’t want them to see.

How to know it worked

  • The person is on your Restricted list.
  • Your posts are shared with Friends, not Public, when you don’t want them to see them.

Still not working? Your next steps

  1. Someone is harassing you? See how to report content on Facebook.
  2. Worried about who can find you? See People You May Know.
