Who Can See My Facebook Posts? Change a Post’s Audience, Your Default and Past Posts

Every Facebook post has its own audience: Public, Friends, Only me and so on. You choose it with the audience selector below your name when you post, and you can change it later on the post itself. This guide shows how to do that on a computer, iPhone, iPad, Android, Facebook Lite and a mobile browser, how to set a default audience for future posts, and how to switch all your past posts to Friends at once.

Quick answer

When you create a post, tap or click the audience selector below your name (for example Friends) and choose who can see it. To change a post you’ve already shared, tap Options on the post > Edit Privacy in the app, or click the audience icon next to the post’s date on a computer. To set the audience for future posts, go to Settings & privacy > Settings > Audience and visibility > Posts > Who can see your future posts? To make all old posts Friends-only, use Limit Past Posts in the same place. Meta says this can’t be undone in one click.

Does this match what you see?

  • A post went out as Public when you meant Friends.
  • Your posts keep defaulting to the wrong audience.
  • People who aren’t your friends can see your old posts.
  • Someone you didn’t share with saw a post you were tagged in.

Steps are from Facebook’s Help Center for computer, iPhone, iPad, Android, Facebook Lite and mobile browser. This guide is about posts on your own profile. Meta says Page posts have their own default audience settings.

Why this happens: the possible causes

Common reasons a post is seen by more (or fewer) people than you expected, according to Meta.

  • The audience was changed for one post onlyCheck this first

Meta says changing the audience for one post only changes that post. On most devices, your next post goes back to your default audience.

  • Your default audience is PublicCheck this first

Meta says your default audience, set in your privacy settings, is used for your future posts.

  • You tagged someone, or posted somewhere publicPossible

Meta says a tagged person’s friends may also see the post, and posts or comments in a public group are always public.

  • You posted on someone else’s profilePossible

Meta says when you post on another person’s profile, that person controls who can see the post.

Try these 60-second checks first

  • Look at the small audience icon next to the post’s date or time. It shows who the post is shared with.
  • Before you tap Post, check the audience button below your name.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Choose the audience before you post

Safe & reversible1 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says you choose who can see each post with the audience selector, which appears in most places where you share content, such as posts and photos.

iPhone & iPad

  1. At the top of your Feed or profile, tap the text box next to your profile picture.
  2. Below your name, tap the audience selector (for example Friends).
  3. Select the audience you’d like to share with (for example Friends, Public or Only me), then tap Done.

Android

  1. At the top of your Feed or profile, tap the text box next to your profile picture.
  2. Below your name, tap the audience selector (for example Friends).
  3. Select the audience you’d like to share with (for example Friends, Public or Only me). In Facebook Lite, tap the circle to the right of the audience.

Computer (browser)

  1. Computer: at the top of your Feed or profile, click the text box next to your profile picture. Mobile browser: tap What’s on your mind? in Feed, or Post a status update on your profile.
  2. Below your name, click or tap the audience selector (for example Friends).
  3. Choose the audience (for example Friends, Public or Only Me).

Meta says if you have additional Facebook profiles, the audience you choose on one profile doesn’t carry over to your other profiles. Reels and stories have their own audience setting, chosen separately.

Did it work? The audience button below your name shows the audience you picked before you post.

Fix 2: Change who can see a post you’ve already shared

Safe & reversible1 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says the audience selector also appears on things you’ve already shared, so you can see and change who each post is shared with.

iPhone & iPad

  1. Tap Menu (top left on iPhone; bottom right on iPad), then tap your name to go to your profile.
  2. Scroll down to the post you want to edit.
  3. Tap Options in the top right of the post, then tap Edit Privacy.
  4. Select a new audience (for example Public, Friends or Only Me), then tap Done.

Android

  1. Go to your profile. (Meta’s Android and Lite steps say to tap Menu, top left on Android and top right in Lite, then scroll to the post. Our note: tap your name in Menu to open your profile first.)
  2. Scroll down to the post you want to edit.
  3. Tap Options in the top right of the post, then tap Edit Privacy (in Lite, Meta’s pages also call it Change Audience).
  4. Select a new audience (for example Public, Friends or Only Me).

Computer (browser)

  1. Computer: click your profile picture in the top right, then your name. Scroll to the post and click the audience selector next to its date or time (the icon depends on its current audience), then pick a new audience.
  2. Mobile browser: tap Menu in the top right, then your name. Scroll to the post, tap Options > Edit Privacy (one Meta page calls it Change Audience), choose the audience, then tap Done at the bottom.

Meta says a change on one device updates the post on all your devices. If you shared the post on someone else’s profile, they control its audience, not you.

Did it work? The audience icon next to the post’s date or time has changed.

Fix 3: Set a default audience for future posts

Safe & reversible2 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says your default audience is used for your future posts. Changing one post’s audience doesn’t change it.

iPhone & iPad

  1. Tap Menu (top left on iPhone; on iPad, Menu is in the bottom right), then Settings & privacy > Settings.
  2. Scroll down to Audience and visibility, then tap Posts.
  3. Tap next to Who can see your future posts? and tap the audience you want. Meta says your choice is saved immediately. Tap See all for every option.

Android

  1. Tap Menu (top left on Android; top right in Facebook Lite), then Settings & privacy > Settings.
  2. Scroll down to Audience and visibility, then tap Posts.
  3. Tap next to Who can see your future posts? and tap the audience you want. Meta says your choice is saved immediately. Tap See all for every option.

Computer (browser)

  1. Click your profile picture in the top right of Facebook.
  2. Select Settings & privacy, then Settings.
  3. Scroll down to Audience and visibility, then click Posts.
  4. Click next to Who can see your future posts?, select the audience, then click Done.

Our note: we received Meta’s steps for computer, iPhone, Android and Facebook Lite. On iPad and in a mobile browser, look for the same Audience and visibility > Posts settings from Menu.

Did it work? When you start a new post, the audience button below your name shows your new default.

Fix 4: Make all your past posts Friends-only (Limit Past Posts)

Read first: can remove data2 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says Limit Past Posts changes every past post that’s visible to more people than your friends (for example Public posts) to Friends, all at once.

iPhone & iPad

  1. Tap Menu (top left on iPhone; bottom right on iPad), then scroll down and tap Settings & privacy > Settings.
  2. Scroll down to Audience and visibility and tap Posts.
  3. Tap View next to Limit who can see past posts.
  4. Tap Limit Past Posts, then tap Limit Past Posts again to confirm.

Android

  1. Tap Menu (top left on Android; top right in Facebook Lite), then scroll down and tap Settings & privacy > Settings.
  2. Scroll down to Audience and visibility and tap Posts.
  3. Tap View next to Limit who can see past posts.
  4. Tap LIMIT PAST POSTS, then tap Limit past posts to confirm (in Lite, both buttons say Limit Past Posts).

Computer (browser)

  1. Click your profile picture in the top right of Facebook.
  2. Select Settings & privacy, then Settings.
  3. In the left, click Posts.
  4. Next to Limit who can see past posts, click Limit Past Posts, then click Limit Past Posts again to confirm.
  5. Mobile browser: tap Menu in the top right > Settings & privacy > Settings > Audience and visibility > Posts > View next to Limit who can see past posts > Limit Past Posts, then confirm.

Meta says this can’t be reversed in one click: to put posts back the way they were, you have to change the audience of each post yourself. Posts you shared with a custom audience (such as Friends except Acquaintances, or Close Friends) aren’t changed.

Did it work? Your old Public posts now show the Friends icon next to their date.

Why other people may still see your post

Meta lists several things that affect who sees what you share:

  • Tags: if you tag someone, Meta says the tagged person’s friends may also see the post. After Limit Past Posts, a post still includes the person you tagged and people they include in posts they’re tagged in. You can remove the tag.
  • Public groups: Meta says posts and comments in a public group are always public and can be seen by anyone.
  • Someone else’s profile: when you post on another person’s profile, that person controls who can see it. Limit Past Posts also doesn’t change posts by other people that you’re tagged in.
  • Where posts appear: Meta says your post shows up in Feed, on your profile and in search results, and people in the audience may be able to see it across Meta technologies.
  • Reels and stories: you choose their audience separately from posts.
  • Locked profile: Meta says if you’ve locked your profile, your sharing choices are more restricted. See Lock your Facebook profile.
  • Page posts: Meta says default audience settings for Page posts are different from those for profile posts.

Will my next post use the same audience?

Meta’s Help Center gives two different answers, depending on the device:

  • Computer, iPhone, iPad, Android and Lite: Meta says choosing a new audience only changes that post. Your next post goes back to the default audience in your privacy settings.
  • Mobile browser: Meta says the audience selector keeps the audience you last used. If you choose Public for one post, your next post will also be Public.

Control what’s on your profile

Your posts are only part of your profile. Meta lists these tools for the rest:

  • About info (places you’ve lived, family and relationships and so on): on a computer, click About below your cover photo, then Options next to the info > Edit. In the app, tap See Your About Info on your profile, then Edit. In Facebook Lite, tap See More About Yourself on your profile, then Edit. In a mobile browser, tap Menu (top right) > your name > See More About Yourself > Edit. Use the audience selector next to each item to choose who sees it.
  • Timeline review: turn it on to approve or dismiss photos, posts and app activities you’re tagged in before they appear on your timeline. Meta says you can still be tagged, and the tagged content is still shared with the audience the person who posted it chose, in other places on Facebook such as Feed and search.
  • Tagged posts on your profile: set an audience for who can see posts you’ve been tagged in on your profile.
  • Posts by others: Meta says only you and your friends can post to your profile. Choose who sees their posts with the Who can see what others post on your profile? setting.
  • Stop friends posting on your profile: on a computer, profile picture > Settings & privacy > Settings > Profile and tagging (left column) > Who can post on your profile? > choose Only Me. On iPhone and Android: Menu (top left) > Settings & privacy > Settings > Audience and visibility > Profile and tagging > Who can post on your profile? > Only Me. Meta notes friends can still comment on any post they can see.
  • View As: see what your profile looks like to other people.
  • All audience settings: on a computer, profile picture > Settings & privacy > Settings > Audience and visibility in the left column. In the app, Menu (top left on iPhone and Android; bottom right on iPad; top right in Facebook Lite and a mobile browser) > Settings & privacy > Settings > Audience and visibility, then tap the option you want to change (for example posts or stories).

Other ways to control who sees your content

Meta also points to these settings:

  • Activity Log: review your posts and things you’ve been tagged in.
  • Profile and Tagging settings: manage who can see what other people post on your profile, and who can see content you’re tagged in.
  • Profile details: edit your basic info and choose who can see it.

Our note: if you want some friends to see less, you can add them to your Restricted list, or choose a custom audience such as Friends except Acquaintances when you post.

How to know it worked

  • The audience icon next to each post’s date shows who can see it.
  • New posts start with your chosen default audience.

Still not working? Your next steps

  1. Want only friends to see your profile? See Lock your Facebook profile.
  2. Want some friends to see less? See Facebook Restricted list.
  3. Someone is harassing you? See Block someone on Facebook.

In the app, go to the post on your profile, tap Options > Edit Privacy and choose Friends. On a computer, click the audience icon next to the post’s date or time and choose Friends.

How do I make all my old Facebook posts private?

Use Limit Past Posts: Settings & privacy > Settings > Posts (under Audience and visibility in the app) > Limit who can see past posts (tap View in the app) > Limit Past Posts, then confirm. Meta says it changes Public posts to Friends, but can’t be reversed in one click.

Why did my Facebook post go back to Public?

Can people I tag, and their friends, see my Friends-only post?

Yes. Meta says the tagged person’s friends may also see the post, and after Limit Past Posts the audience still includes the person you tagged and people they include in posts they’re tagged in. You can remove the tag.

Can I change the audience of a post on someone else’s profile?

No. Meta says when you share on someone else’s profile, that person controls the audience.

What on my Facebook profile is always public?

Meta says anyone can see your name, profile picture, cover photo, gender, username, user ID (account number) and networks.

How do I stop friends posting on my Facebook profile?

Meta says go to Settings & privacy > Settings > Profile and tagging > Who can post on your profile? and choose Only Me. Friends can still comment on posts they can see.

How do I see what my Facebook profile looks like to others?
