Facebook Marketplace Ratings: Can’t Rate, Can’t Remove a Bad Rating, or Rating Dropped

Marketplace lets buyers and sellers rate each other. Most rating problems come down to a few rules: ratings can only be given in the Facebook app for iPhone or Android, they may become public once you receive 5 or more eligible ratings, you can’t change or remove ratings you receive, and you can change a rating you gave only until the other person rates you or 14 days pass, whichever comes first (deleting has a 14-day limit). Here’s each one, from Meta’s help page.

Quick answer

Use the Facebook app for iPhone or Android: Meta says ratings can’t be given on facebook.com or in Facebook Lite. You can rate someone once you’ve bought from or sold to them, or chatted with them in Messenger. Your ratings may become public after 5 or more eligible ratings. You can’t change, delete or hide ratings you receive. A rating you gave can be changed until the other person rates you or 14 days pass, and deleted within 14 days. Ratings can drop when Meta changes how it collects and shows them or when a rater deletes their account.

Does this match what you see?

  • There’s no Rate seller or Rate buyer option.
  • You can’t see your own rating, or someone else’s.
  • Someone left you an unfair rating and you want it removed.
  • Your overall rating suddenly went down.

  • Open the Facebook app on an iPhone or Android phone (not a computer or Lite).
  • Check you’ve bought from, sold to or messaged the person in Messenger.
  • Remember the time limits: you can change a rating you gave until the other person rates you or 14 days pass (whichever comes first), and delete it within 14 days.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Can’t find Rate seller or Rate buyer?

Safe & reversible2 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

Meta says you can rate a seller or buyer once there’s been a purchase or a Messenger conversation between you, and only in the Facebook app for iPhone or Android.

  1. Switch to the Facebook app on iPhone or Android: Meta says ratings can’t be given on facebook.com or in Facebook Lite.
  2. Rating a seller: Meta says buyers can rate from their Messenger conversation, or from the item’s listing page. Rate seller appears once you’ve bought something from them or chatted with them in Messenger.
  3. Rate a seller in Messenger (Meta’s steps): open the Messenger app, tap Search at the top, search for the person, open your conversation, then tap Rate seller. Choose 1 to 5 stars (1 very poor, 2 poor, 3 fair, 4 good, 5 excellent). You can also pick reasons, such as communication or harassing messages, and add details.
  4. Rating a buyer: Meta says sellers can rate from the Messenger conversation, or when they mark the listing as sold. Rate buyer appears once the buyer has bought from you or chatted with you in Messenger.

Meta says sellers can also ask buyers to rate them. Meta also lets people rate each other without a completed sale, because a rating may be about behavior.

Did it work? You see Rate seller or Rate buyer and can submit a rating.

Fix 2: Sellers: ask buyers to rate you

Safe & reversible2 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

Meta says sellers can request that buyers rate them, from the Marketplace profile or from a listing. Meta says this isn’t available on computers.

  1. Tap Menu (top left; on iPad, bottom right), then Marketplace (under See more if needed).
  2. From your Marketplace profile: tap Profile > Marketplace profile, scroll down and tap Request ratings, find the buyer, then tap Send request.
  3. From a listing: tap Profile, then below Selling tap Your listings. Scroll to the listing, tap Ask for reviews, then Send request below the buyer’s name.

Did it work? The request is sent to the buyer.

Fix 3: Can’t see a rating?

Safe & reversible2 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

Meta says ratings may become public once you receive 5 or more eligible ratings, and that where they show depends on the app.

  1. If you have fewer than 5 eligible ratings, they may not be public yet.
  2. Buyer ratings are only visible in the Facebook app for iPhone or Android, not on a computer or in Lite.
  3. Seller ratings show on the seller’s profile on all platforms, except Facebook Lite, where Meta says the rating shows on the product details page.
  4. Where to look (Meta’s steps): your own profile: Computer Marketplace > Buying > Marketplace profile; iPhone/Android Marketplace > Marketplace profile > View Marketplace profile at the top; Lite Marketplace > Marketplace profile > your profile photo (top right). Someone else’s: open an item for sale (in Lite, tap the item photo), then click or tap the seller’s name (computer and Lite) or scroll to Seller information > Seller details (iPhone/Android).
  5. Your own new rating: Meta says you can view it once you rate the other person back, or 14 days after you receive the rating, whichever comes first. This is to stop people being pressured into changing ratings.

Did it work? You can see the rating where Meta says it appears.

Fix 4: Got an unfair rating or review? Report written reviews that break the rules

Safe & reversible3 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

Meta says you can’t change, delete or hide the ratings you receive, to keep the system fair and balanced.

  1. Written seller review? Meta says you can report seller reviews that don’t follow its Community Standards or don’t focus on the service you offered, and that it may remove reviews that don’t follow its standards. You can only report a review that includes text and that you didn’t write.
  2. Report it (iPhone/Android): Marketplace > Your profile > Marketplace profile, scroll to Seller reviews, tap Options next to the review, then Report review. Computer: Marketplace > Selling > Marketplace profile, then Options next to the review below Seller reviews > Report review.
  3. If you had a negative experience on Marketplace, Meta says you can leave them a rating, block them, and report the buyer, seller or listing. See how to report.
  4. If you’re concerned about your physical safety, theft or fraud, Meta says to contact your local law enforcement.
  5. Your overall rating is the average of all your eligible ratings, so (our note) one low rating counts for less as you get more.

Did it work? You’ve rated, blocked or reported the person as needed.

Fix 5: Change or delete a rating you gave

Read first: can remove data2 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

Meta has time limits on editing ratings, to stop people being pressured into changing them.

  1. Change it: Meta says you can change a rating you gave until the other person submits their rating, or for 14 days, whichever comes first.
  2. Delete it: Meta says you have up to 14 days. After that, you can’t delete it or create a new rating for that listing.
  3. If you delete a rating, Meta says you can’t create a new one for that listing.

Did it work? Your rating shows the change, or is gone.

Fix 6: Your rating dropped?

Safe & reversible1 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

Meta lists two reasons your ratings may drop.

  1. Meta changes the way it collects and shows ratings.
  2. A buyer or seller who rated you deleted their account: Meta says that account’s rating data is deleted too.

Meta says your overall rating is the sum of your star ratings divided by the number of ratings, and may include both buyer and seller ratings.

Did it work? You know why your rating changed.

Seller reviews: written comments about a seller

As well as star ratings, Meta says buyers can write seller reviews: comments about their experience after buying something through Marketplace. They appear on the seller’s Marketplace profile and on the listing they relate to. Meta says seller reviews are only available in the Facebook app for iPhone or Android, not on a computer or mobile browser, and that it doesn’t verify that every reviewer actually bought from the seller.

How to review a seller

  • From your messages: tap Menu (top left) > Marketplace (under See more if needed) > Profile > Inbox, then tap Review seller below the seller’s name.
  • From the listing you bought: scroll down to Seller information and tap Review seller next to the seller’s name.

Rules to know before you post

  • Once your review is public, you can’t edit it. You can delete it at any time.
  • If you delete it (before or after the seller replies), you can’t post another review of that seller for the same transaction.
  • The seller can reply, but you can’t reply to their reply. Sellers’ replies are public and can be deleted at any time.
  • If you block the seller after posting, your review won’t be visible to the public.
  • Sellers: Meta says you may be able to request a review from a buyer through your Marketplace profile, the product page, the listing inventory page or a chat thread.

Sellers: reply to a review

Meta says you can only reply to seller reviews in the Facebook app for iPhone or Android, not on a computer or mobile browser.

  • From Notifications: tap You have a new review on your Marketplace profile, tap Write a reply... below the buyer’s review, enter your reply and tap Share.
  • From your Marketplace profile: tap Menu (top left) > Marketplace > Profile > Marketplace profile, scroll to Seller reviews, tap Options next to the review > Reply, enter your reply and tap Share.
  • You can reply only once per review. Your reply is public and shows with the review (you may need to tap View reply).
  • Delete a reply at any time: same route, tap Options next to your reply > Delete.

Got a review that breaks the rules? See how to report a seller review.

How to know it worked

  • You can rate a buyer or seller in the iPhone or Android app.
  • You understand when your ratings become visible and what you can change.

  2. Someone is harassing or scamming you? See Marketplace scams.
