Quick answer
Go to Billing and payments, select the ad account, click Payment methods, then Pay now, and choose a working payment method. Before you pay, check Meta’s list: the card must be enabled for online transactions, have a CVV, have enough funds, not be expired, and be linked to a phone you can get an OTP on. Meta says one payment method can typically be added to up to ten ad accounts. Once you’ve paid, Meta resumes active and scheduled ads. If ads stay paused after paying, you may have hit Meta’s daily spending limit.
Does this match what you see?
- Your ads stopped and a notice says a payment failed.
- Billing and payments says your account is unsettled.
- Your ad account is disabled after a payment problem.
- Your card is declined when you try to pay or add it.
- You paid, but ads haven’t restarted.

Billing is easiest to manage on a computer. Payment methods available differ by country.
Why this happens: the possible causes
Meta’s checklist for payment methods covers the most common reasons a payment fails.
| Problem | What to check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Card blocked for online use | The card must be enabled for online transactions | Card checklist |
| Not enough funds | The payment method needs sufficient funds | Pay balance |
| OTP not received | The card must be linked to a phone you can get an OTP on | Card checklist |
| Card on too many ad accounts | Typically one method can be on up to ten ad accounts | Card checklist |
| Expired or wrong details | Expiry date, card number, CVV and bank details must be correct | Card checklist |
| Method not supported | It must be supported in your country | Card checklist |
- The card isn’t enabled for online transactionsCheck this first
Meta lists this as a requirement. Many banks switch online or international card payments off until you turn them on in your banking app.
- Not enough funds or an expired cardCheck this first
Meta says the method needs sufficient funds and shouldn’t expire before future charges.
- The OTP can’t reach youPossible
Meta says the payment method should be connected to the phone where you expect an OTP, and you need access to that phone.
- Too many ad accounts on one cardPossible
Meta may limit how many ad accounts use the same payment method, typically up to ten.
Try these 60-second checks first
- Is your card enabled for online (and international) payments in your banking app?
- Does it have enough funds and a CVV?
- Can you receive the OTP on the phone linked to the card?
- Is the card not expired?
How to fix it, step by step
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.
Fix 1: Check your payment method against Meta’s list
Most failed payments come down to one of the items on Meta’s checklist.
- Make sure the payment method is supported in your country. Meta notes, for example, that American Express works only with automatic billing.
- Make sure it’s enabled for online transactions. Check this in your bank’s app or with your bank.
- Cards must have a CVV (the 3-digit code on the back, or a 4-digit code on the front).
- Make sure the card is linked to a phone you can receive OTPs on, and you have that phone with you.
- Check the expiry date, and that the card number, CVV and bank details you entered are correct.
- Make sure there are enough funds.
- If the same card is on many ad accounts, Meta says it may limit this, typically to ten.
Meta says local payment methods can only be used to add money to your available funds, and generally can’t be saved to the account (except some used for auto-reload).
Did it work? Your payment method meets every item on the list.
Fix 2: Pay your balance (Pay now)
Meta says a failed payment pauses ads and disables the ad account until the amount due is paid, and that paying the automatic billing balance may fix it.
Computer (browser)
- Go to Billing and payments.
- Select the ad account.
- Click Payment methods, then Pay now.
- Choose an existing payment method or add a new one.
- If the payment fails again, Meta suggests trying again later with a different card.
Meta notes that advertisers in India may not be able to use Pay now or Add funds when the ad account is disabled.
Did it work? The balance shows as paid.
Fix 3: Using available funds? Add funds
If your ad account uses available funds only (not automatic billing), Meta says delivery stops when funds run short.
Computer (browser)
- Go to Billing and payments and select the ad account.
- Click Payment methods, then Add funds.
- Add enough to cover your campaigns.
Meta says that if your account was disabled for a failed payment and you add funds, it may take a little while to return to a good state. With automatic billing, adding funds isn’t required to run ads.
Did it work? Your available funds cover your campaigns.
Paid, but ads are still paused?
- After you pay, Meta says it resumes active or scheduled ads and tries to make up lost time to meet your original dates and budgets. Give it a little time.
- If ads are still paused after paying, Meta says you may have reached your daily spending limit, set by Meta. Its help page on the daily spending limit (external site, opens in a new tab) explains more.
- If the account is restricted for another reason (policy, security or verification), see ad account disabled or restricted.
Stop it happening again (Meta’s tips)
- Add a backup payment method, so ads aren’t paused if your main one fails.
- Keep cards active, check they aren’t restricted by your bank, and watch their expiry dates.
- Keep enough money on the card, especially near your monthly billing date. Meta says it charges you when you reach your payment threshold, and again on your monthly bill date for leftover costs.
- Add money to your available funds. Meta says these are used first, which reduces failed automatic payments. Local payment methods may work for this.
- If your card has a per-transaction limit, Meta says you can lower your payment threshold to match it.
- Using available funds only? Set up auto-reload so you don’t run out.
- Still failing after all this? Meta says to use Contact support at the bottom of Business Support Home.
Bank checks that block ad payments (US, Canada, Australia, UK and Europe)
This is general advice, not from Meta, so check the details with your bank. Before you add or retry a card:
- Check the card is enabled for online payments in your bank’s app, as Meta’s checklist asks. Some banks also let you block international or foreign payments, so check that setting too (names vary by bank). Meta notes some banks decline charges because of their own internal rules.
- Expect a 3D Secure (3DS) check when adding a card: a one-time passcode or approval in your bank’s app. Meta says 3DS is mandatory in some countries, and in the UK and EU most online card payments must pass this kind of strong customer authentication.
- Check any spending limit your bank sets on the card.
- Keep the phone that gets your bank’s OTP with you while you pay.
- If one card keeps failing, try a different card, as Meta suggests.
Error messages and what they mean
Meta’s help lists these common reasons under these headings. The message on your screen may be worded differently.
Payment method not supported- What it usually means
- The method isn’t available in your country, or it’s on too many ad accounts.
- What to do
- Check Meta’s list of payment methods available in your country (external site, opens in a new tab). Meta advises not adding the same method to more than ten ad accounts.
Card or recurring payment method may not be active- What it usually means
- The card or recurring payment can’t be charged.
- What to do
- Update your payment details, or add a new payment method. If it keeps happening, Meta says to contact your bank.
Expiry date may be invalid- What it usually means
- The expiry date on the card doesn’t match, or the card has expired.
- What to do
- Check the expiry date and update your payment details, or add a new payment method. If it continues, Meta says to contact your bank.
Card couldn’t be verified- What it usually means
- In some countries Meta says a 3DS check is mandatory when you add a card. It can fail because of a wrong CVV or OTP, an OTP that never arrives, connection problems at the card network, or your bank’s own rules.
- What to do
- Re-enter the details carefully and keep your OTP phone with you. If it keeps failing, contact your bank or add another payment method.
We couldn’t charge your payment method- What it usually means
- The charge didn’t go through.
- What to do
- Check every card detail and update them. If it continues, contact your bank or add another payment method.
Charge is declined by your financial institution- What it usually means
- Your bank refused it, possibly because of its own internal rules.
- What to do
- Check your details, then ask your bank why, or use another payment method.
Connection error / time out- What it usually means
- The connection between Meta’s payment partner and your bank dropped.
- What to do
- Try again later, or use a different payment method.
Charge declined due to insufficient funds- What it usually means
- Not enough money, or a limit on the card.
- What to do
- Top up the account behind the card, or add a payment method with enough funds.
How to know it worked
- Your balance shows as paid.
- Your payment method meets Meta’s checklist.
- No unsettled-account message shows in Billing and payments.
Still not working? Your next steps
- If ads stay paused after paying, check Meta’s daily spending limit.
- If the account is restricted for policy reasons, see ad account disabled or restricted.
- If you think someone else ran ads or charged your card, secure your account and contact your bank. See Facebook hacked.
- Meta says that if payments keep failing after trying everything, use Contact support at the bottom of Business Support Home.

Frequently asked questions
Why was my Facebook ad account disabled after a failed payment?
Meta says ads are paused and the ad account is disabled until the amount due is paid. You won’t be charged more until then. Pay the balance with a working payment method.
Why does my card keep getting declined for Facebook ads?
Check Meta’s list: supported in your country, enabled for online transactions, has a CVV, enough funds, not expired, details correct, and linked to a phone you can get an OTP on.
How many ad accounts can use one card?
Meta says it may limit this, and typically one payment method can be added to up to ten ad accounts.
I paid, so why are my ads still paused?
Meta says you may have reached your daily spending limit. Otherwise, check Business Support Home for other restrictions.
