Facebook “Session Expired” or Keeps Logging You Out? How to Stay Logged In

Facebook keeps you logged in with a small piece of saved data: a cookie in your browser, or saved login data in the app. When that data is blocked, wiped or replaced, you land back on the login screen with Session expired. Usually it’s a browser or app setting. Sometimes, though, it means someone changed your password and logged every device out. This guide checks that first, then fixes the everyday causes.

Quick answer

First rule out a security problem. If you can log back in with your usual password, check Where you’re logged in for devices you don’t recognize. If your password no longer works or your email was changed, go to Facebook hacked. Otherwise the usual cause is your browser blocking or clearing cookies. In Safari on iPhone, Apple warns that Block All Cookies will likely stop you signing in to sites. Settings that delete cookies when you close the browser, privacy extensions, and cleaning apps do the same. In the app, update Facebook and clear its cache (Android), or reinstall it (iPhone).

Does this match what you see?

  • You see Session expired and have to log in again.
  • Facebook logs you out every time you close the browser or app.
  • You’re logged out on one device but not another.
  • You were logged out of every device at once.
  • You get logged out, then can’t log back in with your usual password.

Browser menu names vary by browser and version. The Facebook app on iPhone and Android uses the same Settings menus.

Why this happens: the possible causes

The cause depends on how and where you get logged out.

How you get logged out and what it usually means
What happensWhat it usually meansDo this first
Logged out everywhere, and your password no longer worksSomeone may have changed your passwordFix 1
Logged out everywhere, but your password still worksA password change (yours) with “Log out of other devices” ticked, or a security sign-outFix 1
Logged out each time you close the browserCookies are blocked or deleted when the browser closesFix 2
Logged out only in one browserAn extension or that browser’s privacy settingsFix 3
The app logs you outOld app version or damaged app dataFix 5
  • Your browser blocks or deletes cookiesCheck this first

Facebook needs a cookie to remember you’re logged in. Apple warns that with Safari’s Block All Cookies on, you’ll likely be unable to sign in to sites even with the right password. Settings that clear cookies when you close the browser log you out every time.

  • Privacy extensions or cleaning appsCheck this first

Ad blockers, privacy extensions and phone “cleaner” apps can remove or block Facebook’s cookies and saved data.

  • Old app version or damaged app dataPossible

If the app’s saved login data is damaged, it can keep asking you to log in.

  • A password change logged out your devicesPossible

Facebook’s Change password screen has a Log out of other devices option, for when someone else used your account. If you, or someone else, ticked it, every other device is logged out.

  • Someone else got into your accountLess likely

Meta lists login problems, and emails about a changed password, email or phone, among the signs of a hacked account.

Try these 60-second checks first

  • Try your usual password. If it no longer works, go straight to Facebook hacked.
  • Check for a message from Facebook about a password, email or phone change you didn’t make. To be sure an email is genuine, check it at facebook.com/recent_emails/security (or Accounts Center > Password and security > Recent emails), as Meta suggests.
  • Notice when you get logged out: on closing the browser, in one app, or everywhere at once.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Rule out a security problem first

Being logged out everywhere at once can be the first sign that someone changed your password. Checking takes a few minutes and protects everything else.

  1. Log in with your usual password. If it doesn’t work and you didn’t change it, or Facebook emailed you about a change to your email or phone, follow Facebook hacked. Meta says that when your email is changed, it sends your previous address a link to reverse the change.
  2. If you can log in, open Where you’re logged in. Meta says this section of Settings lets you log out devices you don’t recognize. In recent app versions, look under Accounts Center > Password and security.
  3. Log out any device you don’t recognize, then change your password: Accounts Center > Password and security > Change password.
  4. On the Change password screen, tick Log out of other devices if you think someone else used your account. Expect to log in again on your own devices afterward.

Only enter your password on facebook.com or in the official app. Meta says it will never ask for your password in an email. Never share login codes with anyone, including people who say they’re from Meta.

Did it work? Only your own devices are listed under Where you’re logged in, and your password works.

Fix 2: Stop your browser blocking or deleting Facebook’s cookies

If Facebook can’t keep its login cookie, it can’t remember you. This is the most common reason for being logged out every time you close the browser.

Computer (browser)

  1. Safari on iPhone: go to Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced, and make sure Block All Cookies is off. Apple says that with it on, you will likely not be able to sign in to a site even with the correct password.
  2. Chrome on a computer: check More > Settings > Privacy and security. Look for a setting that deletes cookies when you close Chrome, or a list of sites not allowed to use cookies, and make sure facebook.com isn’t affected. Names vary between versions.
  3. Firefox, Edge and other browsers: look in the privacy or cookie settings for an option that deletes cookies when the browser closes, and add an exception for facebook.com or turn it off.
  4. Don’t use a private or incognito window for Facebook if you want to stay logged in. Private windows forget cookies when you close them.

Did it work? You stay logged in after closing and reopening the browser.

Fix 3: Find the extension or app that’s clearing your login

Safe & reversible5 minComputer (browser)Android

Privacy tools and “cleaner” apps often delete cookies and saved data on a schedule. They can log you out without you noticing they did it.

Android

  1. If you use a phone “cleaner” or booster app, check whether it clears app data or cache automatically. Exclude Facebook, or stop using it.
  2. Check the phone’s battery or memory “optimization” settings aren’t closing Facebook too aggressively. Names vary by phone maker.

Computer (browser)

  1. Turn off extensions one at a time, especially ad blockers, privacy and cookie-cleaning tools. Log in, close the browser, and reopen it each time.
  2. When you find the culprit, add facebook.com to its allow list, or keep it turned off.

Did it work? You stay logged in once the extension or app is changed.

Fix 4: Clear damaged cookies, then log in fresh

May sign you out5 minComputer (browser)

A damaged cookie can keep throwing you back to the login screen. Clearing it means you log in once more, with a clean cookie.

Computer (browser)

  1. Make sure you know your password first. These steps clear cookies for every website, so you’ll be logged out of other sites too.
  2. Chrome on a computer: More > Delete browsing data > choose a time range > tick Cookies and other site data > Delete data. Google notes this doesn’t delete saved passwords.
  3. Chrome on Android: More > Delete browsing data, choose a time range and the data to clear. Google notes that clearing cookies can mean signing in to sites again.
  4. Safari on iPhone: Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced > Website Data > Remove All Website Data.
  5. Log in to Facebook again and test.

Did it work? You log in once and stay logged in.

Fix 5: The app keeps logging you out: update it and refresh its data

Old app versions and damaged saved data are the usual reasons the app forgets you.

iPhone & iPad

  1. Update Facebook: App Store > your profile icon > App Updates > Update.
  2. Close Facebook fully (swipe up from the bottom, pause, swipe the app away) and reopen it.
  3. If it continues, offload and reinstall: Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Facebook > Offload App, then Reinstall App. Apple says offloading keeps the app’s documents and data, so this mainly gives you a fresh copy of the app.
  4. Still happening? Delete the Facebook app and install it again from the App Store. This removes its saved data, so know your password first.

Android

  1. Update Facebook in Google Play: profile icon > Manage apps & device > Updates available.
  2. Clear the app’s cache: Settings > Apps > Facebook > Storage & cache > Clear cache.
  3. Only if it still happens, use Clear storage on the same screen. It deletes the app’s saved data, so you’ll need to log in again. Know your password first. (Names vary by phone.)

Did it work? The app stays logged in after you close and reopen it.

Logged out on just one device

If one device stays logged in and another doesn’t, your account is fine. The problem is on the device that keeps logging you out.

  • On that device, work through Fix 2 (browser) or Fix 5 (app).
  • Check its date and time are set automatically. A wrong clock can upset secure logins.
  • If you use a VPN on that device only, try without it to see if the problem stops.
  • If that device can’t log in at all, see Facebook works on your phone but not your computer.

Don’t switch off your security to stay logged in

Keep two-factor authentication on even if logging in again is a nuisance. Never stay logged in on a shared or public computer. When you’re done there, log out, and close the browser.

Error messages and what they mean

How to know it worked

  • You stay logged in after closing and reopening the browser or app.
  • Only your own devices are listed under Where you’re logged in.
  • Two-factor authentication is still on.

Still not working? Your next steps

  1. If you can’t log in at all, see Can’t log in to Facebook.
  2. If Facebook says your account is locked, see Facebook account locked.
  3. Report a bug. In the app: ☰ Menu > Help and support > Report a problem, follow the prompts until you reach Select product, then pick Settings. On a computer, Meta’s path is your profile picture > Help & support > Report a problem.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Facebook keep saying “Session expired”?

Facebook can’t find a valid login for your browser or app. Most often your browser is blocking or clearing cookies, an extension or cleaner app is deleting them, or the app’s data is damaged. Sometimes a password change logged out all your devices.

Why does Facebook log me out every time I close my browser?

Your browser is deleting cookies when it closes, or you’re using a private window. Turn that setting off for facebook.com, or stop using private browsing for Facebook.

Facebook logged me out of all my devices. Was I hacked?

Not necessarily. Changing your password with “Log out of other devices” ticked logs out every device except the one you used. But if your password no longer works, or you got emails about changes you didn’t make, treat it as a hack and follow Meta’s hacked-account steps.

Will clearing cookies delete my Facebook account or posts?

No. Clearing cookies logs you out in that browser (of other websites too, if you clear them all). Your account and posts stay on Facebook. Make sure you know your password first.

Should I turn off two-factor authentication to stop being logged out?

No. Two-factor authentication isn’t a usual cause of being logged out, and it protects you if someone gets your password.
