Quick answer
Go to Settings and privacy > Your account (Account on Android) > Deactivate your account, read the information, tap Deactivate, enter your password, and confirm (Yes, deactivate in the app, Deactivate account on x.com). Subscriptions bought in the X app stay active, so cancel them where you originally subscribed (for example, the App Store or Google Play) first. Changed your mind? Log in within 30 days to reactivate. After 30 days, X says the account is permanently deleted.

Deactivating vs. deleting: what happens and when
- Deactivating is the first step to deleting. X says deactivation lasts 30 days, giving you time to decide whether to reactivate.
- While deactivated: X says your username and public profile can’t be seen on x.com or in the iPhone and Android apps.
- After 30 days without logging in: X says your account is permanently deleted. It’s no longer available in X’s systems, you can’t reactivate it, and you lose access to your old posts.
- Your username: once the account is deleted, X says it’s no longer linked to your account and becomes available for others to register.
Things to know before you deactivate
- Download your data first: X says you need to request your X archive before you deactivate. See download your X archive.
- Just want a new name or email? X says you don’t have to delete your account to change your username or email; update them in Account information anytime.
- Search engines: X says deleting your account won’t remove your information from Google or Bing, because X doesn’t control those sites. X has steps for contacting the search engine (external site, opens in a new tab).
- Mentions of you: X says your username in other people’s posts stays, but no longer links to your profile. To have that content reviewed under the X Rules, X says file a ticket through its help forms (external site, opens in a new tab).
- What X keeps: X says deactivating doesn’t remove data from its systems, and it may keep some information from deactivated accounts for safety and security.
Subscriptions: avoid being charged after you deactivate
- X says deactivating does not automatically cancel a paid subscription such as X Premium or Super Follows bought through the X app; it stays active.
- Manage it on the platform where you originally subscribed. See canceling X Premium and canceling a creator Subscription.
- X says subscriptions bought on x.com cancel automatically when you deactivate.
Our tip: cancel app subscriptions before you deactivate, while you can still log in and check them.
Deactivating won’t fix account problems
X says deactivating and reactivating won’t resolve issues like missing posts, wrong follower or following counts, suspicious Direct Messages, or a possible account compromise. Use these instead:
- Suspicious DMs or a possible hack: can’t log in to X and connected apps and sessions.
- Account locked or limited: unlock your account.
Changed your mind? Reactivate within 30 days
- X says if it’s been less than 30 days, just log in on x.com or in the app and confirm you want to reactivate.
- X says posts, followers and likes may take a while to fully come back.
- X says a deactivated account’s username and email become available to other accounts 30 days after deactivation.
Full steps: reactivate a deactivated account.
How to know it worked
- Our check: you’re logged out, and no app-store subscription for X is still active.
Still not working? Your next steps
- Can’t log in to deactivate? See can’t log in to X.
- Account suspended? See deactivate a suspended account.
