Can’t Change or Confirm Your Email on X (Twitter)? How to Fix It

X says you change it in Settings and privacy > Account > Email, then confirm it from the email X sends. Until you confirm, some features won’t work.

Quick answer

Go to Settings and privacy > Account > Email, enter the new address and tap Done (Next on Android). Then open the email X sends to that address and tap Confirm now. X says each email can only be on one X account at a time, and an unconfirmed email blocks features like login verification and downloading your post archive.

Does this match what you see?

  • X won’t accept your new email because another account uses it.
  • The confirmation email from X never arrived.
  • You can’t turn on login verification or request your archive.
  • You got an email saying your X email was changed.

No confirmation emailCheck the inbox and confirm
Features blockedYour email isn’t confirmed yet
  • One email per accountCheck this first

X says an email address can only be associated with one X account at a time.

  • Email not confirmedCheck this first

X says until you tap Confirm now in its email, the address stays unconfirmed.

Try these 60-second checks first

  • Check spam, junk and social folders for X’s confirmation email (our tip).
  • Make sure the email isn’t already used on another X account.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Change your email address

Safe & reversible2 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

X’s steps:

  1. In the app: open the navigation menu (on Android, the menu icon or your profile icon at the top), then Settings and privacy.
  2. Tap Account > Email.
  3. Enter the new email address and tap Done (Next on Android).
  4. On x.com: click the more icon > Settings and privacy > Your account > Account information, enter your password, click Email, type the new address and click Save.

X says it emails your previous address to alert you to the change, and keeps a record of past email addresses for safety and security (you can see the history by downloading your X data).

Did it work? Our check: the new address shows under Account > Email.

Fix 2: Confirm your new email

Safe & reversible2 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

X says it sends an email to the new address asking you to confirm it’s yours.

  1. Log in to the inbox for the new address.
  2. Open the email from X asking you to confirm.
  3. Tap Confirm now. X takes you to your account and asks you to log in if needed.

No email? X says check spam, junk and bulk folders, and Gmail’s Social tab. Button won’t work? X says the link may have expired: log in to X, find the yellow prompt at the top and click Resend confirmation. Still nothing? X says check your email is typed correctly in Account settings, or switch to an address at a large provider like Gmail or Yahoo, which X says it delivers to more reliably.

Did it work? Our check: X no longer shows the email as unconfirmed.

Email, phone or username “already in use”

X says an email address can only be linked to one X account at a time. Our tip: use a different address, or log in to the other account that has it and change that account’s email first. Forgot that account’s password? See reset your password.

  • Is it on another account? X says you may already own another X account. To check an email, send yourself a password reminder (external site, opens in a new tab). To check a username, go to x.com/username: if no account is there, X says it’s most likely on a deactivated or suspended account.
  • Someone else used your email? See emails for an account you didn’t create.
  • Deactivated account: X says its username and email can’t be used on another account for 30 days after deactivation. The same goes for its phone number unless you deleted it in settings before deactivating. After 30 days, X says its support team can clear your information (they can’t restore the account) through its help forms (external site, opens in a new tab).
  • Suspended account: X says usernames, phone numbers and emails on suspended accounts can’t be used under any circumstances. See account suspended.

Getting X emails for an account you didn’t create

X says this is usually honest confusion: someone signed up and mistyped their email, using yours. To remove your email from that account:

  • In X’s confirmation email, click the “not my account” link. You’ll see a page asking you to confirm removing your email from that account.
  • If you own the email and didn’t create the account, click the gray Opt-out button. X says your email is then disconnected from that account, and you’ll see a confirmation.
  • X says you can still use that email later to create your own X account.
  • Clicked “Not my account” by mistake on your own account? X says go to account settings (external site, opens in a new tab) and add a different email address.
  • Keep getting these emails? X says file a report with support (external site, opens in a new tab).

Our advice: don’t click other links in an email you weren’t expecting. Check it’s really from X first; see is that email really from X?

Features blocked because your email isn’t confirmed

X says if you don’t confirm, your email stays unconfirmed, and you can’t use some features, such as requesting your post archive or login verification (two-factor). Confirm it using the steps above.

Add, change or remove your phone number

X says an accurate phone number is an important step for account security: it lets you use login verification and makes account recovery easier. X says one phone number can be on up to 10 X accounts.

  • Add one: Settings and privacy > Account > Phone number (on iPhone, enter your password), tap Add, enter the number and tap Next (Add phone on Android), then type the SMS code X sends and tap Verify. X says you can sometimes ask for a voice call instead. On x.com: More > Settings and privacy > Your account > Account information > Phone > Add phone number, enter your password and the number, then enter the code and click Activate phone. X says you don’t need the country code or leading zero there.
  • Update it: navigation menu (on Android, the menu or profile icon) > Settings and privacy > Account > Phone number (then Update number on iPhone), and follow the prompts.
  • On x.com: More > Settings and privacy > Your account > Account information > Phone > Update phone number, enter your password, type the new number, then enter the SMS code X sends and click Verify.
  • Remove it (iPhone and Android app): Phone number > Delete number > Yes, delete.
  • Our note: before removing your number, make sure your email is confirmed, so you can still reset your password and use login verification.

X says your phone number was removed from your account

X says it sends this notice when it gets signals that your number may belong to someone else, and removes the number as a security precaution. This can happen when your account has been inactive for 45 days or more and the number is added to a new account whose owner can verify it. Our tip: add a phone number you control (see Add one above) and make sure your email is current, so you can still recover your account.

Phone lost or stolen

X says you can stop whoever has it from using your account: sign in to x.com on a computer, go to Apps settings (external site, opens in a new tab), and click Revoke access for apps connected through the lost phone. Forgot your password? See reset your X password. Our tip: also log out other sessions and, if you use two-factor, see lost phone with 2FA.

Got a new number

X says sign in on the web or your phone’s mobile browser, go to your mobile settings (external site, opens in a new tab), delete the old number, add the new one and click Continue. X texts you a code right away; enter it to verify.

X says an account can have only one phone number. Even with a dual-SIM phone, you need to choose one number; there’s currently no way to attach two or more. The other way round, X says one number can be added to up to 10 accounts, and each still gets texts for password resets and login verification.

“Phone number already associated with another account”

X says your number may have belonged to someone else before, and old information is still in its system. X says this doesn’t give the previous owner any access to an account you create with that number. If you can’t create an account with the number, X suggests signing up with your email address instead. (X’s Premium FAQ adds that you may not be able to add a number if it’s already linked to more than 10 accounts, to an account deleted in the past 30 days, or to a suspended account.)

A stranger shows up as someone you know

X says if a friend changed their number, delete their old number from your phone’s contacts and save the new one. Otherwise, when you upload contacts, the new owner of the old number’s account may appear as someone you know.

Before you change your phone number or get a new phone

  • X says make sure your phone number on X is up to date before you switch, and that an up-to-date phone number or email helps you never lose access. No email on the account yet? X recommends adding one.
  • New number? X says update it by signing in on the web or your phone’s mobile browser.
  • New phone? X says wipe your personal information off the old one, and remove or wipe its SD card before you get rid of it.
  • As an extra precaution, X recommends signing in to x.com on a computer, going to your Apps settings (external site, opens in a new tab), and clicking Revoke access for apps you connected through your old phone or number.

Can people see my email or phone, or find me with them?

X says your email and phone number are never shown publicly, even if people can find you with them. But X says it uses them to make your account discoverable: if someone has your email or number in their contacts and uploads them to X, they may find you, or see you as a suggested account.

  • Turn it off (iPhone): tap the navigation menu > Settings and privacy > Privacy and safety, then under Discoverability and contacts turn off Let others find you by your email and/or by your phone.
  • Android: tap the navigation menu or profile icon > Settings and privacy > Privacy and safety > Discoverability and contacts, and turn off the same two settings.
  • x.com: go to Privacy and safety > Discoverability, and uncheck Let people who have your email address find you on X and/or …phone number…. X says changes save automatically. On mobile.x.com, tap your profile photo > Settings and privacy > Privacy and safety > Discoverability and contacts.
  • X says turning these off also stops it using your uploaded contacts to suggest your account to others.
  • Several accounts on one number? X says each account has its own setting; people can find every account on that number that has it turned on.

Our tip: if an ex, stalker or someone you’ve blocked keeps finding new accounts of yours, turn both settings off on every account.

Why X suggests you to people (and people to you)

X says suggestions come from uploaded contacts (yours and other people’s), your location, your activity on X, visits to websites with X content (if your ad settings allow), and Promoted Accounts. Turning off the find-me-by-email/phone settings above stops X suggesting you to people who have your details. X says removing uploaded contacts stops suggestions based on them, though similar suggestions may still appear from who you follow. Seeing a deceased person’s account suggested? X asks you to report it; see contacting X about a deceased family member’s account (external site, opens in a new tab).

Uploaded contacts: stop syncing or remove them

X says if you upload your address book, it can suggest people you know, and may use those contacts to personalize suggestions and content.

  • Stop syncing (app): Settings and privacy > Privacy and safety > Discoverability and contacts, then turn off Sync address book contacts (slider on iPhone, checkbox on Android). X says this only stops syncing from that device, and X keeps contacts already uploaded.
  • Remove everything (app): in the same place, tap Remove all contacts and confirm. X says this deletes uploaded contacts and turns off syncing on every device.
  • On x.com: More > Settings and privacy > Privacy and safety > Discoverability and contacts > Manage contacts (you may need your password) > Remove all contacts > Remove. On mobile.x.com, tap Remove contacts.
  • X says removal takes a little time, so you may still see contact-based suggestions for a while.

How to know it worked

  • Our check: your new email shows in settings, it’s confirmed, and you can turn on login verification.

Still not working? Your next steps

Frequently asked questions

Why won’t the X Confirm now button work?

X says the link may have expired. Log in to X, find the yellow prompt at the top, and click Resend confirmation.

How do I stop people finding me on X by my phone number?

In the X app, go to Settings and privacy > Privacy and safety > Discoverability and contacts and turn off Let others find you by your phone (and by your email). On x.com, uncheck Let people who have your phone number find you on X. X says your email and phone are never shown publicly.

Can I add two phone numbers to my X account?

No. X says an account can have only one phone number, even if you have a dual-SIM phone.

Why does X say my phone number is already associated with another account?

X says the number may have belonged to someone else, and old information is still in its system. The previous owner has no access to your new account. If you can’t sign up with the number, use your email address.

Why did X remove the phone number from my account?

X says it removes a number when it gets signals it may belong to someone else, for example when your account has been inactive for 45 days or more and the number is verified on a new account.

Why am I getting X emails for an account I didn’t create?

X says someone probably mistyped their email and used yours. Click “not my account” in the email, then Opt-out to remove your email from that account.

Can I use the same email on two X accounts?

No. X says an email address can only be associated with one X account at a time.

Why can’t I turn on two-factor authentication on X?

One reason is an unconfirmed email. X says until you confirm your email, you can’t use security features like login verification.

Will my old email be told I changed it?

Yes. X says it emails the previously used address every time the email on your account changes.
