Quick answer
X says the blue checkmark comes with the Premium and Premium+ tiers (not Basic), or as an affiliate of a Premium Business / Verified Organization, and appears after a review of your account. Subscribers must confirm a phone number. If you change your profile photo, display name or @username, X removes the checkmark until it re-checks your account, and you can’t make more changes during that review.

Based on X Help Center “About X Premium”, supplied by the site owner, October 31, 2026. X says Premium is now part of The X Subscription; plans, features and prices change, so check X for current details.
Why this happens: the possible causes
Why the checkmark may be missing.
| Situation | Reason |
|---|---|
| Just subscribed | The checkmark waits for a review |
| Basic tier | Basic doesn’t include it |
| Edited profile | Removed until re-reviewed |
- Waiting for reviewCheck this first
X says the checkmark appears on eligible Premium and Premium+ profiles only after a review.
- Profile changedCheck this first
X says changing your photo, display name or @username removes the checkmark until your account is validated again.
- Basic tierPossible
X lists the checkmark under the Premium and Premium+ tiers only.
Try these 60-second checks first
- Check which tier you’re on (Basic, Premium or Premium+).
- Make sure your phone number is confirmed.
- Avoid editing your photo, name or @username while waiting.
How to fix it, step by step
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.
Fix 1: Subscribed, but no checkmark yet
X says Premium features (it says “most” in one place and “all” in another) are available right away, except the blue checkmark, which appears on eligible profiles after a review.
- Check you’re on Premium or Premium+, or are an affiliate of a Premium Business account (X’s FAQ calls it a Verified Organization). X says these are the ways to get a blue checkmark; it doesn’t list the checkmark for Basic.
- Check X’s eligibility rules: a display name and profile photo, activity in the past 30 days, a confirmed phone number, no recent changes to your photo, display name or @username, and no signs of being misleading or of platform manipulation and spam.
- Wait for the review. X’s FAQ says it’s automatic and can take several business days. Don’t change your profile photo, display name or @username meanwhile.
Did it work? Our check: the blue checkmark shows next to your name.

What the blue checkmark means (and doesn’t)
- X says the blue checkmark means the account has an active Premium subscription and meets its eligibility rules. It doesn’t mean the account has been ID verified, and X says it doesn’t endorse the views of accounts with checkmarks.
- X says accounts verified under the old system (from before April 1, 2023) lost the checkmark unless they subscribe to Premium.
Can’t subscribe to Premium?
- Where to subscribe: on x.com, select Premium in the side menu; in the iPhone or Android app, open the profile menu > Premium. X asks you to verify your phone number if you haven’t.
- Sign-up blocked? X says accounts that haven’t been active in the last 30 days, or that changed their profile photo, display name or @username in the last 3 days, may be unable to sign up. You also need a verified phone number.
- New account? X says it may set waiting periods for new accounts, and change them without notice.
- Can’t add your phone number? X’s FAQ says this can happen if the number is linked to more than 10 accounts, to an account deleted in the past 30 days, or to a suspended account. If you’ve blocked texts from 40404, X suggests unblocking it or using a number from a different carrier. See add or change your phone number.
- Not available where you are? X’s FAQ says Premium isn’t available in all markets.
Checkmark disappeared after editing your profile
X says once you’re subscribed, changing your profile photo, display name or @username removes the blue checkmark until X confirms your account still meets its requirements, and you can’t make further changes during that review. Our tip: make all your profile changes at once, then wait.
X also says it can remove a checkmark at any time, without a refund, for example if you break its Terms of Service or your account is suspended. X says the X Rules don’t apply differently to subscribers, and subscribers’ enforcement issues and reports are handled by its existing enforcement teams under the current review process.
What each Premium tier includes
- Basic: editing posts, longer posts and longer video uploads, reply prioritization, text formatting, bookmark folders and custom app icons. No checkmark.
- Premium: everything in Basic plus the checkmark, fewer ads (X says about 50% fewer in For You and Following), Creator Subscriptions and Original Content Rewards eligibility, ID verification and Media Studio.
- Premium+: everything in Premium plus no ads in most places (occasional sponsored content), the largest reply prioritization, X Pro, Articles and SuperGrok.
- Ads by tier: X says Basic has no ad reduction. Premium has about 50% fewer ads only in the For You and Following timelines; Basic and Premium subscribers still see the normal amount of ads in replies, profiles, the Explore tab and other areas. Premium+ is ad-free, but you may still see occasional sponsored content, such as branded notification offers like “like-to-remind.” X’s FAQ puts it differently: Premium+ timelines are ad-free, but you’ll occasionally see ads in replies, Explore and some other areas. Its checkmark page says no ads anywhere, with occasional promoted content.
- Reply prioritization: X says people will see a slight preference for replies from verified accounts, and it’s still testing how much it prioritizes Premium subscribers’ content against other ranking factors. Our note: a higher tier doesn’t guarantee your replies appear first.
- X says businesses and organizations have separate Premium Business and Premium Organizations plans with gold, grey and affiliate badges. X describes Premium Business (for businesses) as coming with a gold checkmark, and Premium Organizations (for governments and nonprofits) with a grey checkmark; both include affiliation badges, VIP support and impersonation defense. Elsewhere on the same page, X says grey is for governmental or multilateral organizations and gold covers non-profits.
- X says these organizations can affiliate other accounts with theirs; affiliated accounts get a label showing the organization’s profile picture. X says Premium Business and Premium Organizations accounts, and their affiliates, get Premium+ included, which also includes SuperGrok (xAI’s premium subscription for the Grok web and mobile app).
How much X Premium costs (web prices)
- United States: Basic $3.00 / $32.00 · Premium $8.00 / $84.00 · Premium+ $40.00 / $395.00 (USD)
- United Kingdom: Basic £3.00 / £32.00 · Premium £8.00 / £84.00 · Premium+ £31.00 / £313.00
- Canada: Basic C$3.75 / C$40.00 · Premium C$10.00 / C$105.00 · Premium+ C$56.00 / C$560.00
- Australia: Basic A$4.88 / A$51.43 · Premium A$13.00 / A$135.00 · Premium+ A$62.00 / A$621.00
- Most euro countries (including France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands): Basic €3.00 / €32.00 · Premium €8.00 / €84.00 · Premium+ €38.00 / €377.00. (X’s table lists Premium+ monthly in Belgium as €46.00.)
- X’s table also lists local prices for other European countries, such as Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Poland and Switzerland.
- Why is it more in the app? X’s FAQ says iOS and Android prices differ because of app store fees, and the web is where you’ll get the lowest price.
- X says you can pay monthly or yearly on the web, iOS or Android. If Premium is available to you, your local price is shown on x.com and in the iPhone and Android apps.
Upgrading, downgrading, canceling and refunds
X’s pages disagree on where you can switch tiers: its Premium page says iOS and web only, while its Premium FAQ says iOS, web and Android. Either way, switch from the platform where you already subscribed.
Upgrading to a higher tier
- iOS: X says you get a partial, prorated refund for the rest of your previous subscription.
- Web: X says the credit left on your current billing cycle goes toward the new tier, you’re charged the difference right away, the switch is immediate, and billing moves to the new tier’s cycle. X’s Premium page and FAQ also say leftover credit is applied to future payments.
- Android (Google Play), per X’s FAQ: once you pay the new price, the new tier starts instantly, and your remaining time is prorated and credited to you.
- X says upgrading on the same day won’t affect creator payouts.
Downgrading to a lower tier
- On iOS and web, X says your current tier and its features stay until the end of the billing cycle, then switch to the new tier at its price.
- Android (Google Play), per X’s FAQ: the new tier starts instantly, and your next billing date is pushed back by the value left on your old, more expensive tier.
- On iOS and web, X says you won’t get a refund for the current cycle when you downgrade, unless required by law.
Canceling Premium
- X says you cancel from your settings on the platform where you subscribed (web, iOS or Android).
- To avoid another charge, X says cancel at least 24 hours before your subscription renews.
- Your Premium features last until the end of your billing cycle, and canceling doesn’t refund amounts already paid.
- X says your blue checkmark stays until the end of the term you paid for, unless your account is suspended or X removes the checkmark for another reason.
- Gifted subscription? X’s FAQ says to cancel it by messaging @Subscriptions.
Refunds
Subscribed through the App Store or Google Play? X says to contact Apple (external site, opens in a new tab) or Google (external site, opens in a new tab) directly for all app-related refund and cancellation issues.
Someone else bought Premium on your account
X’s FAQ says if there’s a Premium subscription on your account that you didn’t authorize:
- Cancel the subscription (see canceling Premium).
- Change your password.
- Turn on extra security settings, such as two-factor authentication.
X says you can do all of this in Settings. Our note: also check connected apps and sessions. If you can’t get in at all, see can’t log in to X.
Getting help with Premium
- Subscription issues: X’s FAQ says to DM @Subscriptions on X. It says DM support is only for Premium subscribers; everyone else can use X’s Help Center.
- Verified organizations: X says you can use your dedicated help portal at x.com/i/verified/settings.
- Ad issues: X says to message @AdsSupport.
- Hacked account: X says to submit a ticket; see can’t log in to X. Suspended by mistake: see appeal a suspension. X says you can’t submit a ticket for someone else’s account.
A Premium feature isn’t working
- X says not all features are on every platform or in every location, and features can change at any time.
- Edit post: X says you get 1 hour to make up to five edits (for example updating text, tagging someone or reordering media), only on original posts and quote posts, not replies. X’s how-to page adds that you can only edit from the same device you posted from, and a post can’t be edited once you’ve replied to it yourself. To edit: tap the more icon on the post > Edit post > make changes > Update.
- Posts not appearing right away? That’s Undo post: X says it’s on by default for Premium, and your post stays private until the timer ends (5 to 60 seconds) or you tap Send now. Change the timing or turn it off in Premium > Preferences > Early access to select new features > Undo post (app), or Premium > gear icon > Undo post (x.com). You can also choose which post types it applies to.
- Check you’re subscribed: open Premium (then Preferences in the app). X says a card at the top shows your current tier with Manage next to it.
- App icon and color theme: in the app, Premium > Preferences > Extras > App Icon or Theme.
- Bookmark folders: X says Premium gives unlimited, always-private bookmark folders. iPhone: long-press the Bookmark icon on a post > Add to Folder. Android: tap the share icon > Bookmark > Add to Folder. x.com: click Bookmark > Add to Folder > Create a new Bookmark Folder. X says removing a bookmark from a folder doesn’t delete it; to delete, remove the bookmark itself (on Android: share icon > Delete Bookmark), or use the more icon at the top of Bookmarks to remove all at once.
- Missing a feature? X’s FAQ says compare your plan with X’s features list, then contact support (see getting help) if it’s still missing.
- Fewer ads / no ads and replying to verified-only posts start only after the review and checkmark.
- Replies marked as spam: X says replies are still subject to the X Rules whatever your subscription. They may be marked as spam if they’re unrelated to the original post, low quality, or look like platform manipulation.
- Dedicated support: X says Premium subscribers get dedicated support only for subscription-specific issues, such as managing your subscription, accessing your Premium account or settings, enrollment problems, and subscriber-only features. Other account problems go through X’s regular help.
- Longer posts and videos: X’s pages give different limits. Its Premium page says posts up to 25,000 characters and videos up to about 3 hours / 8GB (x.com and the iOS app only), while its posting and video pages give other figures. See can’t post and video limits.
How to know it worked
- Our check: your tier is Premium or Premium+, your phone is confirmed, and the checkmark shows after review.

Frequently asked questions
Why is there a delay before my X Premium posts appear?
X says Undo post is on by default for Premium: your post stays private until the timer ends (5 to 60 seconds). Change or turn it off under Premium > Preferences > Early access to select new features > Undo post (app), or Premium > gear icon > Undo post (x.com).
Does the blue checkmark on X mean an account is verified?
No. X says it means an active Premium subscription that meets its eligibility rules, not ID verification. In the EEA, X now calls these users “Premium” rather than “verified”.
Why don’t I have a blue checkmark after paying for X Premium?
X says the checkmark appears on eligible Premium and Premium+ accounts (or affiliates of a Verified Organization) after a review, which can take several business days; Basic doesn’t include it. You also need a display name, a profile photo and a confirmed phone number.
Why did my X checkmark disappear?
X says changing your profile photo, display name or @username removes it until X re-checks your account. X can also remove it, for example if you break its Terms of Service or your account is suspended.
What does the blue checkmark mean on X now?
X says the blue checkmark now means the account has an active X Premium subscription. Previously it marked active, notable and authentic accounts that were independently verified. X says Premium accounts aren’t reviewed against those old “active, notable and authentic” criteria.
What do the gold, grey and blue checkmarks mean on X?
X says a gold checkmark means an official business or nonprofit (Premium Business), a grey checkmark means a governmental or multilateral organization (Premium Organizations), and a blue checkmark means the account subscribes to Premium and may be a person or an organization. Note: X describes this in several ways. Its Premium page also says Premium Organizations is for governments and nonprofits, and its FAQ calls gold a Verified Organization and grey a government or multilateral individual or organization, so check the account’s profile label if you’re unsure.
Why do I still see ads with X Premium?
X says Premium cuts ads by about 50% only in the For You and Following timelines; replies, profiles and Explore still show the normal amount. Basic has no ad reduction. For Premium+, X’s Premium page says it’s ad-free apart from occasional sponsored content, while its FAQ says Premium+ timelines are ad-free but you’ll occasionally see ads in replies, Explore and some other areas.
Is there a free trial of X Premium?
Not as of October 31, 2026. X says it isn’t offering free trials of Premium at this time.
Do I have to pay for Premium to keep using X?
No. X says free X isn’t going away, and Premium is an opt-in layer of extra customization.
Can I get a refund for X Premium?
X says subscriptions are non-refundable unless required by law, even if your account is suspended or you lose access. Upgrading on iOS gives a prorated refund of the old plan. For App Store or Google Play subscriptions, contact Apple or Google.
How do I cancel X Premium?
X says manage your subscription from settings on the platform where you subscribed, at least 24 hours before it renews. Features and the blue checkmark last until the end of the paid term, and there’s no refund for amounts already paid.
Can I switch X Premium tiers on Android?
X’s pages disagree. Its Premium page says only iOS and the web; its Premium FAQ says Android is supported too, with the new tier starting instantly on Google Play. Switch from the platform where you subscribed.
Why is X Premium more expensive in the app?
X says iOS and Android prices are different because of app store fees, and buying on the web gets the lowest price.
Someone bought X Premium on my account. What do I do?
X says cancel the subscription, change your password and turn on extra security settings, all from Settings.
How long can I edit an X post with Premium?
X says you have 1 hour to make up to five edits, on original posts and quotes only, from the same device, and not after you’ve replied to your own post.
