Can’t Change Your X (Twitter) Username? Rules and Fixes

Your username (or handle) is the @name in your profile link, used to log in and shown in replies and DMs. Your display name is separate. X says you can change your username in Settings and privacy > Account > Username, as long as it follows the rules and isn’t taken.

Quick answer

Go to Settings and privacy > Account > Username, type a new one and tap Done. X says usernames can use only letters, numbers and underscores (no spaces) and be more than 4 and up to 15 characters. If it’s taken, X asks you to pick another. Your followers, DMs and replies stay, but your old username becomes available to anyone immediately.

Does this match what you see?

  • X won’t accept the username you typed.
  • X says the username is taken.
  • You’re not sure what changing it does to your followers or DMs.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Change your username

May sign you out2 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

X’s steps:

  1. Go to Settings and privacy and tap Account.
  2. Tap Username and type the new one. If it’s taken, X asks you to choose another.
  3. Tap Done.
  4. On x.com: click More in the navigation bar > Settings and privacy > Your account > Account information, enter your password, change the Username field and click Save.

X says changing your username doesn’t affect your followers, DMs or replies; followers just see the new name. X suggests telling followers first so they reply or message the new @name.

Did it work? Our check: your profile shows the new @username and your profile link uses it.

Username rules

  • X’s username page says it must be more than 4 characters and up to 15 characters. (X’s sign-up page words this as fewer than 15 characters.) Our tip: aim for 14 or fewer to be safe.
  • Only letters A–Z, numbers 0–9 and underscores: no symbols, dashes or spaces.
  • X says usernames can’t contain “Admin” or X’s own name unless they’re official X accounts.
  • Looks free but X won’t accept it? X says it may belong to a suspended or deactivated account; those usernames aren’t immediately available. Visiting that @name shows a suspension or deactivation message.

The username you want is taken

X says some usernames are unavailable because they’re taken or for other reasons, and it will prompt you to choose another.

  • X suggests adding an underscore before or after the name, like @lindsay_ or @_lindsay, and putting your real name in your display name.
  • Inactive account has it? X says it can’t release inactive usernames at this time.

No username option in the app?

X’s pages disagree here: its change-username page gives steps in the app, but its common-username-issues page says changing your username isn’t currently supported in X’s mobile apps. If you can’t find it in the app, log in on x.com or mobile.x.com in your phone’s browser and change it there.

Move a username from one of your accounts to another

  • Log in to the account that has the username you want and change it to something else (X suggests adding a number or underscore). X says this frees the username immediately.
  • Log in to your other account and change its username to the one you just freed. Our tip: do this straight away, since anyone can take it once it’s free.
  • X says deactivating an account doesn’t immediately free its username; it becomes available 30 days after deactivation.

Username vs display name

X says your display name is separate from your @username and can be playful, a business name or your real name. It can be up to 50 characters, and you can change it any time.

How to know it worked

  • Our check: the new @username shows on your profile and you can log in with it.
