Why this happens: the possible causes
Common call questions.
| What you see | Why |
|---|---|
| Call switches to speaker | You held the phone away from your face |
| Calls on the lock screen or in your call log (iPhone) | CallKit, which is built in and can’t be turned off |
| “Not on Snapchat” | Snapchat can’t match the number to a friend, often because it lacks Contacts access |
| Calls from strangers | Your Who Can Contact Me setting allows them |
- CallKit on iPhoneCheck this first
Snapchat says CallKit lets you answer without unlocking or opening the app, and it can’t be disabled.

- Make sure you and your friend both have the latest version of Snapchat.
How to fix it, step by step
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.
Fix 1: Start a voice call
Snapchat calls start from a Chat.
- Open a Chat or Group Chat.
- Tap the phone icon to start a voice call. Snapchat says up to 32 friends can join.
Snapchat says a voice call switches to speakerphone when you hold the phone away from your face, and goes back to the earpiece when you bring it close.
Did it work? Your friend’s phone rings.

Fix 2: Fix calls that won’t connect
Our note: Snapchat’s help pages don’t list call-specific fixes, so these are the steps Snapchat gives for Chat problems, which also apply to calls.
- Update Snapchat on your phone, and ask your friend to update too (iPhone (external site, opens in a new tab), Android (external site, opens in a new tab)).
- Check the connection on both sides: switch to Wi-Fi or move to better signal.
- Close Snapchat completely and reopen it.
- Free up space by clearing Snapchat’s cache. Snapchat says this won’t delete your Memories, Snaps or Chats.
Our tip: also check Snapchat is allowed to use your microphone (and camera for video) in your phone’s settings. Still failing? See Snapchat not working.
Did it work? The call connects and you can hear each other.
Did Fix 2 solve it?

CallKit on iPhone: lock-screen calls and your call log
- Snapchat says CallKit lets you answer Snapchat calls without unlocking your phone or opening the app.
- You can call friends back from your iPhone’s call log.
- Snapchat says calls through CallKit don’t appear on your phone bill.
- CallKit can’t be turned off, but you can delete entries from your iPhone’s call log.
Calling from iPhone Contacts, and “Not on Snapchat”
On iPhone, open a contact in the Contacts or Phone app and choose Snapchat as the calling option. If you’re friends on Snapchat, the call opens there.
Snapchat needs Contacts access to match the number to an account, and may ask you to turn it on in Settings. If it can’t match the number, you’ll see Not on Snapchat: you can invite them by text or make a normal phone call instead. See adding friends from contacts.
Share your screen during a call (iPhone)
Snapchat says mobile screen sharing is currently only available on iOS.
- Open a Chat and start a voice or video call with the buttons at the top right.
- In the menu at the bottom, tap the screen share button.
- Tap Start Broadcast.
- To stop, tap Stop Sharing.
Our tip: close anything private, such as banking apps or messages, before you start, since everyone on the call sees your screen.
Stop calls from people who aren’t your friends
Snapchat says to update Who Can Contact Me and Send Me Notifications in your privacy settings. See Snapchat privacy settings for the steps. To stop one person, block them.
How to know it worked
- Calls connect, and only people you choose can call you.
Still not working? Your next steps
- Using Snapchat on a computer? See Snapchat for Web call audio. Recorded audio muffled on iPhone? See muffled audio.
