Can’t Add Friends on Snapchat? 4 Reasons and What to Do

Snapchat says that if you can’t add a friend, first make sure you have a good internet connection. If that’s fine, it gives four possible reasons: the person blocked you, they deleted their account, you’ve hit the friend limit, or you’ve been adding friends too quickly.

Quick answer

Try Snapchat on both Wi-Fi and mobile data. If you still can’t add someone, Snapchat says they may have blocked you or deleted their account (in which case you can’t add them), or you may have hit Snapchat’s limits on how many friends you can have or how fast you can add them. For the speed limit, try again later.

Does this match what you see?

  • Tapping Add doesn’t work, or the request doesn’t go through.
  • You can’t add one particular person.
  • You can’t add anyone new after adding lots of friends.
  • An account shows up but you can’t add it.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Check your internet connection

Safe & reversible2 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

Snapchat says to make sure your device has a good internet connection when you can’t add a friend.

  1. Try adding the friend on Wi-Fi.
  2. If that doesn’t work, switch to mobile data and try again.

Did it work? The friend request goes through.

Can’t add one particular person?

  • They blocked you: Snapchat says if someone blocks you, you can’t add them. See what blocking does on Snapchat.
  • They deleted their account: Snapchat says you can’t add a deleted account. It may still show up in Snapchat for a while, until you log out and log back in.

Snapchat says that, for legal reasons, it can’t give out information about another Snapchatter, so Support can’t tell you whether someone blocked you or deleted their account.

Snapchat’s friend limits

  • Too many friends: Snapchat says there’s a limit to how many friends you can have (it says it’s “a lot”). If you reach it, you can’t add more until you remove some old friends to make room.
  • Adding too quickly: Snapchat says there’s also a limit to how quickly you can add friends. If you reach it, try again later.

Snapchat doesn’t publish the exact numbers for either limit in this article.

Can’t see mutual friends?

Snapchat says mutual friends can help you confirm you’re adding the right person. But you’ll only see someone’s mutual friends list on their profile if both of you have turned on sharing mutual friends. If you have it on and they don’t, no mutual friends are shown.

Snapchat gives these reasons you might not see a list:

  • You may not have any mutual friends with that person.
  • They may not be sharing mutual friends yet.
  • The mutual friends themselves haven’t turned on their Mutual Friends setting, so they stay hidden.
  • The feature may not be available for that account or region.

Turn your mutual friends list on or off

Snapchat says sharing your list, and appearing in other people’s lists, is your choice. To turn it off: open My Account, tap the edit icon, and turn off Show Mutual Friends List. You can also find Mutual Friends under My Privacy & Data in Settings.

How to know it worked

  • Your friend request is sent and the person appears as added.
