How to Block Someone on Snapchat (and What Happens When You Do)

Snapchat says that when you block a friend, they can’t send you Snaps or Chats, they no longer see your Stories or Charms, and your Snap Map location is hidden from them. Snapchat says they won’t get a notification, but they might work it out if they can no longer see your profile or contact you.

Quick answer

Swipe right to the Chat screen, tap and hold the friend’s name, tap Manage Friendship, then Block. Snapchat says blocked users can still see what you post publicly, such as Public Stories or Spotlight.

Does this match what you see?

  • Someone keeps sending you Snaps or Chats you don’t want.
  • You don’t want a friend to see your Stories or your Snap Map location.
  • You’re not sure whether to block or just remove a friend.
  • You want to report someone, including someone who has blocked you.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Block a friend in the Snapchat app

Safe & reversible1 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

Snapchat’s own steps; either way works.

  1. Swipe right to go to the Chat screen.
  2. Tap and hold the friend’s name, tap Manage Friendship, then tap Block.
  3. Or: tap a Chat with that friend, tap their profile icon at the top, tap the three circles at the top > Manage Friendship > Block.

Blocking a Public Profile: Snapchat says to go to the Public Profile, tap the three-dot icon in the top right corner, then tap Block and Yes to confirm. Snapchat says people you’ve blocked can still view content you post publicly, like Public Stories or your content on Spotlight.

Did it work? Their name no longer appears in your Friends Feed.

What happens when you block someone on Snapchat

  • They can’t send you Snaps or Chats, and you won’t receive Snaps, Chats or Stories from them.
  • They no longer see your Stories or Charms, and your Snap Map location is hidden from them, even if you were sharing it before.
  • Their name disappears from your Friends Feed, and any active one-on-one conversations are no longer visible to you.
  • They won’t appear in your Search results, Best Friends list or Quick Add suggestions.
  • Snapchat says they won’t be notified, but they might realize if they can no longer view your profile or contact you.
  • They can still see content you post publicly, like Public Stories or Spotlight.

All of the above is how Snapchat describes blocking.

Blocking someone who’s in a group chat with you

Snapchat says blocking someone doesn’t remove you from a group you share. You’ll still see messages they send to that group, but they can’t message you privately or add you to new groups. If you don’t want to see their messages, Snapchat says you can leave the group.

Block or remove a friend?

Snapchat says blocking stops someone interacting with you in any way. Removing a friend just takes them off your Friends list; they may still see public content you share, depending on your privacy settings.

Unblock someone

  1. Tap your profile icon at the top of the screen.
  2. Tap the gear icon to open Settings.
  3. Scroll down and tap Blocked.
  4. Tap the ✖ next to a name to unblock that person.

Snapchat says once you unblock someone, they can send you Snaps and Chats again and view your Stories and Charms. It also says that if you unblock them later, you may not see all your previous Chat history with them, and saved messages may be removed when you’re no longer friends, including when you’ve blocked them.

Report an account or a Snap

Snapchat says you can report the account (external site, opens in a new tab) or a specific Snap (external site, opens in a new tab) from the app, or use its web form (external site, opens in a new tab).

Report an account from Search

  1. In Search, press and hold the account name, then tap Report.
  2. Or tap the account name, tap the three dots at the top, then tap Report.

If they’ve blocked you

Snapchat says you can’t report someone in the app if they’ve blocked you. But if you believe they’ve shared inappropriate or harmful content involving you or someone else, you can still report their account on Snapchat’s support site, help.snapchat.com (external site, opens in a new tab).

Report an underage account

Snapchat says the minimum age (external site, opens in a new tab) for a Snapchat account is 13, with some regional variations. If you think an account belongs to someone under the minimum age, report it with Snapchat’s underage account form (external site, opens in a new tab).

What happens after you report

Snapchat says its teams review reports and may take action if an account breaks its policies, and may contact you for more details. For privacy and account security reasons, it says it can’t always share the outcome of your report.

How to know it worked

  • The person no longer appears in your Friends Feed and can’t send you Snaps or Chats.

Still not working? Your next steps

  1. Think someone else is using your account? See Snapchat hacked.
  2. Getting too many notifications from a group instead? See mute a friend or group.
