Snapchat Topic Chats: Join, Leave, Mute, Hide From Your Profile, and Who Sees Your Messages

Topic Chats are large, public group chats on Snapchat about a topic, creator or place. Snapchat says your messages are public and show your display name, though not your username. Your friends can see which Topic Chats you’ve joined on your profile. You can mute a Topic Chat or leave silently at any time.

Quick answer

Join: tap Topics at the top of the Chat feed, or Join the Chat on a Topic page. Mute: open the chat > ⋮ > turn on Mute Notifications. Leave: ⋮ > Leave Silently (no “left the group” message). Hide it from your profile: leaving the chat removes it.

Does this match what you see?

  • Too many notifications from a Topic Chat.
  • You want to leave a Topic Chat quietly.
  • Friends can see a Topic Chat on your profile.
  • You’re not sure who can see what you post.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Find and join a Topic Chat

Snapchat offers several ways in, and lets you filter by category.

  1. Tap the Topics shortcut at the top of the Chat feed, or use Add Topics on your profile, or tap Join the Chat on a Topic page in Search, Spotlight or Discover.
  2. Browse by category: in the Topics tab, tap Find a Topic, then tap a category pill (such as Sports, TV, Music or Gaming). Tap it again to clear the filter.
  3. Tap Join the Chat.

In a Topic Chat you can send text and emojis, and create or vote in polls (tap the poll icon). Snapchat says polls are open for two hours, only a few can run at once, and the creator and voters get a notification with the results. To delete your own message, press and hold it and tap Delete.

Did it work? The Topic Chat appears in your Chat feed.

Fix 2: Mute or leave a Topic Chat

Safe & reversible1 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

Snapchat lets you silence a Topic Chat or leave it without telling the group.

  1. Mute: open the Topic Chat, tap the ⋮ menu at the top right, and turn on Mute Notifications.
  2. Leave: tap the ⋮ menu and select Leave Silently. Snapchat says this doesn’t post a “left the group” message.

Snapchat says messages you sent stay in the chat after you leave unless you delete them first (press and hold > Delete). Leaving also removes that chat from the Topic Chat pills on your profile.

Did it work? Notifications stop, or the chat is gone from your feed.

Who can see your messages and the chats you join

  • Messages are public and stay in the chat until you delete them.
  • Your display name shows with your messages; your username doesn’t, and members can’t add you as a friend from the chat.
  • Your friends can see the Topic Chats you’ve joined on your profile, and you can see theirs. Snapchat says these are only visible to friends. Friends may also see this activity in the Chat feed, the Topic page and the Topic Chat feed.

Topic Chat pills on your profile

  • No chats joined: you see an Add Topic Chat pill.
  • One chat: its name shows; tap it to open the chat.
  • Two or more: the first name plus a counter, like #music +2; tap it to see, open or leave any of them.
  • On a friend’s profile, up to 3 of their Topic Chats show; tap one to open or join it.
  • To remove a pill, leave that Topic Chat. Snapchat says your profile updates automatically.

Sharing a Topic Chat message (and to Spotlight)

Invite friends: tap ⋮ > Invite Friends. Share one message: press and hold it and tap Share; friends who get it can tap Join the Chat.

Turn a message into a Spotlight Snap

  1. In the Topic Chat, press and hold a text or poll message and tap Snap (or double-tap a message to open the camera with the chat overlaid).
  2. Take a photo or video.
  3. Tap Spotlight on the left of the preview, check the topic tag, and post as usual. Or tap Send To to share to Spotlight, My Story, a Custom Story or friends.

Snapchat says the Snap includes a sticker with the sender’s display name, the chat name, the message and a Join the Chat button. It’s a snapshot: if the original message is later deleted or edited, your Snap doesn’t change. You can’t send it back into the same Topic Chat, and Snap isn’t offered on system or other unsupported messages.

Our tip: because the sticker shows the sender’s name, only turn your own messages, or ones the sender is happy to share, into Spotlight posts. See Spotlight.

Report a message

Press and hold the message, then tap Report. Snapchat says Topic Chats follow its Community Guidelines, and breaking them can get you blocked from Topic Chats or your account disabled. For more on reporting, see report on Snapchat.

How to know it worked

  • Your Topic Chats, notifications and profile pills look the way you want.
