Quick answer
Temporarily locked? Log in at accounts.snapchat.com and select Unlock, or wait for the lock to end (Snapchat says to wait 48 hours if it was locked for another reason; for third-party app locks, the message or email tells you how long). Permanently locked? Try to log in in the app: if you see Appeal Decision, you can appeal, and Snapchat says reviews can take up to 30 days. If there’s no Appeal Decision option, Snapchat says the lock isn’t eligible for appeal. Don’t trust anyone who offers to unlock your account for you.
Does this match what you see?
- Snapchat says your account is temporarily or permanently locked.
- You see an SS06, SS07 or SS18 error when logging in.
- You were locked for using a third-party app or plugin.
- You submitted an appeal and are waiting for an answer.

Why this happens: the possible causes
Why Snapchat says accounts get locked (how common each is, is our estimate).
| Lock | What you can do |
|---|---|
| Temporary | Unlock or wait |
| Permanent | Appeal, if offered |
| Device banned (SS06, SS07, SS18) | Appeal in the app, if offered |
| Third-party apps | Wait, remove them |
- Breaking the Community Guidelines or TermsCheck this first
Snapchat says it locks accounts when it finds content or behavior that goes against them.
- Suspicious activityCheck this first
Snapchat gives the example of sending lots of friend requests to many people in a short time.
- Third-party apps, tweaks or pluginsPossible
Snapchat says using one to access Snapchat can get your account locked.
- A possibly compromised accountPossible
Snapchat says it may lock an account for your safety.
- Logging in from a banned deviceLess likely
Snapchat says this can also lock your account.
Try these 60-second checks first
- Read the exact message in the app, and check the email on your account: it may say how long the lock lasts.
How to fix it, step by step
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.
Fix 1: Temporarily locked
Snapchat says you can try to unlock a temporary lock yourself.
- Go to the Snapchat Accounts Portal at accounts.snapchat.com, log in, and select Unlock.
- If the message says it was locked for another reason, Snapchat says to wait 48 hours, then try logging in again.
Snapchat says this method won’t work if your account is permanently locked.

Fix 2: Permanently locked: appeal in the app
Snapchat says a permanent lock for breaking its Community Guidelines or Terms of Service can’t be unlocked, but some locks can be appealed.
- Open the Snapchat app and try to log in.
- If a pop-up shows Appeal Decision, tap it and follow the steps.
- If you don’t see Appeal Decision, Snapchat says your lock isn’t eligible for appeal.
Snapchat’s locked-account page says the review can take up to 30 days, and its appeals page says it aims to decide within two weeks, as a rough estimate. You’ll be told by email (keep access to the email on your appeal) or in the app. It says the in-app appeal is the only legitimate way to appeal, and opening support tickets outside it won’t speed it up or change the outcome. It may also have removed content or banned your device.
Did it work? You’ve submitted an appeal, or you know your lock can’t be appealed.
Did Fix 2 solve it?

How Snapchat appeals work
- Snapchat says you can appeal within six months of being told about the decision.
- While your appeal is reviewed, the lock generally stays in place.
- Snapchat may uphold, change or reverse its decision. It doesn’t tell the person reported who reported them.
- Content with restricted visibility (for example on Spotlight or Maps) can also be appealed.
- In certain places, including the EU and UK, Snapchat says you may be able to appeal deleted Spotlight or Maps content: open Snapchat > Settings > Account Status and tap an enforcement marked Tap to Appeal.
- If you disagree with the outcome, Snapchat says you can pursue a legal remedy under its Terms of Service, and EU users can go to a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body.
SS06, SS07 or SS18 error: device banned
- SS18 or SS06: Snapchat says the device you’re using has been banned because of abuse or repeated violations of its Community Guidelines.
- SS07: Snapchat says the device has been banned from logging in because too many accounts have been associated with it.
- Snapchat says Support can’t unban a device for you.
Snapchat says you can’t create new accounts on a banned device, and the in-app appeal is the only legitimate way to appeal, including for device bans. It also says people whose accounts were terminated aren’t allowed to create new ones.
Locked for using third-party apps or plugins
If Snapchat says you were temporarily locked for using an unauthorized third-party app or plugin (it names Wicked and IOTA as examples), check the message in the app or the email on your account for how long the lock lasts. When it ends, Snapchat says to remove all unauthorized apps or plugins and update Snapchat before logging back in, or you could be locked again.
Locked because it looks compromised
If Snapchat says your account looks compromised and was locked to be safe, it says to try Snapchat Support Bot. See also can’t log in to Snapchat.
Download your Memories and data from a locked account
- In a browser, log in at accounts.snapchat.com and click My Data.
- Choose the data you want, and a date range (or turn it off for everything).
- Confirm your email address and click Submit.
- When Snapchat emails you, or under See exports, click Download.
Snapchat says data may not be available for some types of locked account.
Avoid another lock
Snapchat suggests:
- Follow best practices for keeping your account safe.
- Verify your email or phone number for extra security.
- Don’t send spam or lots of friend requests in a short time.
- Don’t use unauthorized third-party apps, plugins or tweaks.
How to know it worked
- You’ve unlocked your account, submitted an appeal, or downloaded your data.
