Quick answer
To post, tap or click What’s on your mind? at the top of your Feed (or your profile), add your update, choose the audience, then tap Post. If Facebook won’t let you: check whether you see a block or restriction notice (see Facebook jail), whether you’re posting in a group with its own rules (can’t post in a group), whether a photo or video is the part that fails (can’t upload photos), or whether you see an error message (something went wrong).
Does this match what you see?
- The Post button doesn’t work or nothing happens.
- You see a message that you’re blocked or restricted from posting.
- Your post in a group is pending or doesn’t appear.
- Text posts work, but photos or videos won’t upload.
- Your post went through, but friends can’t see it.
iPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)
Posting steps are from Facebook’s Help Center for computer, iPhone and Android. The troubleshooting sections point to our detailed guides, each built from Meta’s own pages.
Why this happens: the possible causes
The usual reasons a Facebook post won’t go through, and where each one is covered.
| What’s happening | Go to |
|---|---|
| Blocked or restricted notice | Facebook jail |
| Group post pending or not allowed | Can’t post in a group |
| Photo or video fails | Can’t upload photos |
| Error message or freezing | Something went wrong |
| Posted but not visible | Who can see my posts? |
- A block or restriction on your accountCheck this first
Meta says you may be blocked from features if something you posted looked suspicious or abusive to its security systems, if messages or friend requests you sent were marked unwelcome, or if you did something that doesn’t follow its Community Standards.
- Group rules or admin approvalCheck this first
Groups can have their own posting rules, and admins may need to approve posts. See our group guide for Meta’s details.
- A photo or video that won’t uploadPossible
If text posts work but media fails, the problem is the upload, not posting itself.
- An app or connection problemPossible
Error messages, freezing or a Post button that does nothing are usually app or connection issues.
Try these 60-second checks first
- Try a text-only post. If that works, the problem is the photo or video.
- Look for a notice about a block or restriction in your notifications or Profile status.
How to fix it, step by step
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.
Fix 1: Make a post the way Meta describes it
These are Meta’s own steps for sharing a post, so you can rule out a missed step first.
iPhone & iPad
- Tap What’s on your mind? in your Feed or on your profile.
- Add your update. You can also add a photo or video, check in, tag people, or add a feeling or activity.
- Select an audience for your post.
- Tap Post.
Android
- Tap What’s on your mind? at the top of your Feed or profile.
- Add your update. You can also add a photo or video, check in, tag people, or add a feeling or activity.
- Select an audience for your post.
- Tap Post.
Computer (browser)
- At the top of your Feed, click What’s on your mind, [Name]?
- Add a text update, or click the type of post you want (for example Photo/Video or Feeling/Activity). You can also check in, tag people, or add another option such as a GIF or a Live Video.
- Click the audience selector at the top (for example Public) to choose who can see it.
- Click Post.
On a computer, Meta says you can only add a Life event from your timeline. For text posts in the app, Meta says you can also use AI to help with your writing.
Did it work? The post appears in your Feed and on your profile.
Did Fix 1 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 1. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
You see a “blocked” or “restricted” message
Meta says the length of a feature block depends on how serious the violation was and your history on Facebook. Our guide covers how to check Profile status, ask for a review, and how long restrictions last: Facebook jail: restricted from posting.
If Facebook removed a post rather than blocking you, see Facebook removed my content.
You’re posting in a group
Group posts can be held for admin approval or limited by group rules. See Can’t post in a Facebook group.
The photo or video is what fails
If a text-only post works, the upload is the problem. See Can’t upload photos to Facebook. Going live instead? See Facebook Live not working.
You get an error, or the app freezes
See Facebook “Something went wrong” and Clear Facebook’s cache. If Facebook isn’t loading at all, see Facebook not working.
You can’t post on someone else’s profile
Meta says only a person and their friends can post on their profile, and they can choose who can post there, including Only Me. If you can’t post on someone’s profile, they may have turned this off, or you may not be friends.
It posted, but people can’t see it
Check the audience icon next to the post’s date. It may be set to Only me or a narrow audience. See Who can see my Facebook posts?. To change or remove the post, see Edit, delete or recover a post.
How to know it worked
- Your post appears in your Feed and on your profile, with the audience you chose.
Still not working? Your next steps
- Restricted from posting? See Facebook jail.
- Can’t tag someone in the post? See Can’t tag someone.
