Quick answer
Start typing the person’s name and pick their full name (or profile picture) from the list that appears. Our note: just typing the name won’t tag them. If the tag still doesn’t work or doesn’t show, Meta says it may be waiting for approval by the person you tagged or the person who posted the photo, the option may be hidden because of the poster’s audience settings, or the photo may already have 50 tags, the maximum. You can only tag someone in a check-in if their privacy settings allow it.
Does this match what you see?
- The person’s name doesn’t turn into a link when you type it.
- There’s no Tag option on someone else’s photo.
- You tagged someone, but the tag isn’t showing.
- Someone can’t be tagged in your check-in.
iPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)
Steps for tagging photos, check-ins, tag review and audience are from Facebook’s Help Center for computer, iPhone, iPad and Android; we didn’t use Lite or mobile browser versions of those pages. The “Review posts you’re tagged in” steps also cover Lite and mobile browser.
Why this happens: the possible causes
The reasons Meta gives for tags that can’t be added or don’t appear.
| What’s happening | Likely reason |
|---|---|
| Tag added but not showing | Waiting for approval |
| No Tag option on someone’s photo | Their audience settings |
| Can’t add another tag | 50-tag limit |
| Can’t tag them at a location | Their privacy settings |
- The tag needs approvalCheck this first
Meta says your tag may need to be approved by the person you tagged, or by the person who posted the photo if it isn’t yours, depending on their settings for posts they’re tagged in or tag review.
- The other person’s settings hide the optionCheck this first
Meta says you may not see the option to tag people in photos posted by others, depending on their audience settings. You can only tag photos others shared if their privacy settings allow it.
- You didn’t pick the name from the listPossible
In Meta’s steps, you start typing and then select the person’s full name or profile picture when it appears.
- The photo already has 50 tagsPossible
Meta says you can tag up to 50 people or Pages in a photo.
Try these 60-second checks first
- Type a few letters of the name and wait for the list, then tap or click their name or profile picture.
- If it’s someone else’s photo, the tag may be pending until they approve it.
How to fix it, step by step
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.
Fix 1: Tag people in a photo the right way
Meta’s steps have you select the person from the list that appears. That’s what turns a name into a tag.
iPhone & iPad
- At the top of your Feed, tap Photo. Select a photo from your camera roll and tap Done (or tap Camera in the top right to take one, then Next).
- Tap Edit in the top left, then tap Friends.
- Tap a person’s face in the photo, begin typing their name, and tap their profile picture when it appears. When you’re finished, tap Done.
- Tap Next, then Post.
- Already posted? Go to the photo, tap Tag in the top right, tap a person’s face, type their name and tap their profile picture.
Android
- At the top of your Feed, tap Photo and select a photo from your camera roll (or tap Camera in the top right to take one, then Done).
- Tap Friends.
- Type their name, then tap the check box next to their profile picture. When you’re finished, tap Done.
- Tap Post.
- Already posted? Go to the photo, tap Tag in the top right, tap a person’s face, type their name and tap it to select.
Computer (browser)
- At the top of your Feed, click Photo/Video below What’s on your mind, [Name]? and select the photo.
- Hover over the photo and click Edit in the top left, then Tag photo.
- Click a person in the photo, start typing their name, and select their full name when it appears.
- Click Save, then Go back. Select the audience, then click Post.
- Already posted? Click the photo, click Tag in the top right, click the person, select their full name, then click Done tagging.
Meta says you can tag up to 50 people or Pages in a photo, and that the person you tag will be notified.
Did it work? The person’s name shows as a link on the photo or post.

Why a tag won’t work or doesn’t show
- It’s waiting for approval. Meta says your tag may need approval from the person you tagged, or from the person who posted the photo if it isn’t yours. People can turn on tag review for their own posts and review posts they’re tagged in. Until they approve, the tag won’t appear.
- Tags from non-friends are always reviewed. Meta says if someone you’re not friends with tags you in a post, you’ll be asked to review it before it appears on your profile, even with the setting off. Tags from non-friends may go to timeline review.
- The Tag option is missing on someone else’s photo. Meta says this can happen because of the poster’s audience settings. You can only tag photos others shared if their privacy settings allow it.
- The photo is full. Meta says the limit is 50 people or Pages per photo.
- Check-ins: Meta says you can tag friends at a location only if their privacy settings allow it, and some people require approval before they can be tagged.
Our note: if none of these fit, ask the person whether they have tag review turned on. You can’t see or change someone else’s tag settings.
Tag friends in a check-in
- Computer: What’s on your mind > Check in > choose or search for a location > Tag people > select friends > Done > Post.
- iPhone and iPad: What’s on your mind? > Check in > select or search for a location > Tag people > select or search for friends > Done > Post.
- Android: What’s on your mind? > Check in > select or search for a location > Options (at the bottom) > Tag people > select or search for friends > go back > Post.
Who can see a post when you tag someone
Meta says a tag creates a link to the person’s profile, the post may be added to their timeline, and they’ll be notified. Tagging also widens the audience:
- Meta says the post may be shared with the tagged person and their friends. For example, if you tag Jane in a photo shared with your friends, the audience expands to Friends (+): your friends and Jane’s.
- The audience also expands to Friends (+) when others tag your post or photo.
- To keep it from their friends: on a computer, go to the post, click Options in the top right > Edit audience > Save changes. In the app, tap Options > Edit privacy, tap the audience you want, then Save. Meta says you can do this before or after you post.
- Instagram posts shared to Facebook: Meta says if your Instagram and Facebook profiles are connected in your Meta Account and you’re tagged in an Instagram post shared to Facebook, your Facebook profile is tagged directly instead of your Instagram handle.

Approve tags people add to your own posts (tag review)
Meta says when tag review is on, a tag someone adds to something you posted won’t appear until you approve it. You’ll get a notification, and you approve or ignore the tag from the post.
- Computer: profile picture > Settings & privacy > Settings > Profile and tagging (left menu, under Audience and visibility) > under Reviewing, toggle on Review tags people add to your own posts before the tags appear on Facebook?
- iPhone and Android: Menu (top left) > Settings & privacy > Settings > Profile and tagging (under Audience and visibility) > under Reviewing, tap the toggle next to Review tags people add to your posts before the tags appear on Facebook?
- iPad: Menu (bottom right) > Settings & privacy > Settings > Profile and tagging > under Reviewing, tap the toggle.
Meta notes that when you approve a tag, the person tagged and their friends may see your post.
Review posts you’re tagged in before they show on your profile
Meta says when a friend tags you, the post appears on your profile automatically. To review every tagged post first, including friends’ posts, turn on Review posts you’re tagged in:
- Computer: profile picture (top right) > Settings & privacy > Settings > Profile and tagging in the left column > toggle next to Review posts you’re tagged in before the post appears on your profile?
- iPhone and Android: Menu (top left) > Settings & privacy > Settings > scroll to Audience and visibility > Profile and tagging > tap the toggle next to Review posts you’re tagged in before the post appears on your profile?
- iPad: the same, with Menu in the bottom right.
- Facebook Lite and mobile browser: Menu (top right) > Settings & privacy > Settings > Audience and visibility > Profile and tagging, then tap the toggle (in a mobile browser it’s under Reviewing).
Meta says this only controls what’s allowed on your profile: posts you’re tagged in may still appear in Search, Feed and other places on Facebook. A legacy contact can turn this setting off if your account is memorialized, so tagged posts can appear in Tributes.
Remove a tag of you that you don’t like
Meta says if you’re not happy with a post you’re tagged in, you can remove the tag or ask the person who tagged you to take the photo or post down:
- Computer: go to the post or photo, click Options in the top right > Remove tag, then choose to remove the tag or ask the person who shared it to take it down.
- Android: tap the photo to expand it, tap Options > Remove Tag, then choose to remove the tag or ask the person to take it down.
- iPhone: go to your profile, tap Options > Activity Log > Filters > Categories > Your Tags. Tap the photo or post, tap Options in the top right > Remove tag, then OK. (Meta’s page says to reach your profile from Menu in the bottom right; on most iPhones Menu is in the top left.)
Meta says for some types of tags you may need to go to the post on a computer to remove it, but you can still hide any post from your timeline on a phone.
Meta says if the post is abusive, report it. See Report content on Facebook. To stop tags showing on your profile before you’ve seen them, turn on Review posts you’re tagged in.
How to know it worked
- The tagged name shows as a link on the post or photo.
- If it’s pending, it appears once the other person approves it.

Frequently asked questions
Why can’t I tag someone on Facebook?
Meta says the tag option may not appear on photos posted by others because of their audience settings, your tag may need approval from the person you tagged or the poster, and a photo can have up to 50 tags. Also make sure you select the person’s name from the list that appears.
Why isn’t my tag showing on Facebook?
It may be waiting for approval. Meta says people can review tags on their own posts (tag review) and posts they’re tagged in, and tags from non-friends are always reviewed before they appear on a profile.
How many people can I tag in a Facebook photo?
Meta says up to 50 people or Pages per photo.
How do I remove a tag of me on Facebook?
Meta says go to the post or photo, select Options in the top right > Remove tag, then remove the tag or ask the person who shared it to take it down. Report it if it’s abusive.
Does Facebook notify someone when I tag them?
Yes. Meta says when you tag someone, they’ll be notified.
Can the friends of someone I tag see my post?
They may. Meta says the audience expands to Friends (+), which includes the tagged person’s friends. You can change this with Edit audience (computer) or Edit privacy (app).
Will a post I’m tagged in stay off my profile if I don’t approve it?
Yes, if you have Review posts you’re tagged in turned on, or the person who tagged you isn’t your friend. But Meta says the setting only controls your profile: the post may still appear in Search, Feed and other places on Facebook.
