X (Twitter) Video Won’t Upload or Play? Limits, Autoplay, Captions and Downloads

Most X video problems come down to length and file-size limits, autoplay settings, or your connection or browser for live video. Here are X’s own limits and settings for uploading and watching videos.

Quick answer

Without Premium, X says videos can be up to 140 seconds and 512MB. With X Premium or the Plus, Premium, Super and Ultra plans, uploads can be under 4 hours and up to 16GB (1080p under 2 hours, 720p from 2 to 4 hours). Trim longer clips in the app before posting. Stop autoplay in Settings and privacy > Accessibility, display, and languages > Data usage > Video autoplay (on x.com it’s called Autoplay).

Does this match what you see?

  • X won’t accept your video file or says it’s not supported.
  • Your video is too long to post.
  • Videos play automatically and use your data.
  • Live videos won’t load or keep stopping.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Fit your video within X’s limits

X’s upload limits:

  1. Without Premium: up to 140 seconds long and 512MB.
  2. X Premium or the Plus, Premium, Super and Ultra plans: under 4 hours at 1080p with a 16GB maximum; videos over 2 hours (and under 4) upload at 720p. (X’s Premium page gives a lower figure, about 3 hours / 8GB on x.com and the iOS app, so check X if a long upload fails.)
  3. Too long? In the app, X says drag either side of the bar under the video to trim it, tap Trim, then preview and post.
  4. On x.com, X says you’ll be prompted if the file isn’t in a supported format.

Stop videos autoplaying

X says videos and GIFs autoplay in timelines and across X, and the setting is separate for the app and x.com.

  • iPhone: Settings and privacy > Accessibility, display, and languages > Data usage > Video autoplay > On cellular or Wi-Fi, Only on Wi-Fi or Never.
  • Android: same path > Mobile data & Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi only or Never.
  • x.com: More > Settings and privacy > Accessibility, display, and languages > Data usage > Autoplay > On cellular or Wi-Fi or Never.

Live video won’t play

  • X recommends a strong connection, or trying a different network or browser, closing and reopening the app or browser, and using an up-to-date version.
  • On a browser: X says Premium Live Content Streaming and the embedded live video widget need third-party cookies from twimg.com. If they’re blocked, those won’t work. On Safari, click Allow when asked; in other browsers, allow third-party cookies in settings.
  • Never miss a broadcast: on the account’s profile, tap the notification icon > Only posts with live video (on Android, check Account notifications > Only live video). To stop, tap the highlighted icon > None.

No captions or subtitles

  • Captions: turn on Closed Captions (iPhone) or Captions (Android) in your phone’s accessibility settings. X says captions show automatically in your timeline on the apps; for full screen, turn them on at the system level.
  • Subtitles: X says turn your device’s sound off, or on the web use the CC slider on the video.
  • X says not every video has captions or subtitles.

Timestamps in your post aren’t clickable

X says times like 1:23 or 1:02:03 in a post become clickable links into the video, but only on iOS (iPhone and iPad) for now (Android and web are coming), only on posts with exactly one video and nothing else attached, and up to 50 per post.

Skip forward or back

X says in full screen, double-tap the right edge to skip ahead 5 seconds or the left edge to go back 5; keep tapping once to continue.

Who can download your videos

  • X says Premium and Plus, Premium, Super and Ultra subscribers can download videos posted from July 25, 2023 onward, via the three-dot menu > Download video.
  • Stop downloads of your video: while composing, tap Edit on the video > Settings > turn off Allow video to be downloaded. X says you can’t change this later; you’d have to delete the post.
  • Direct Messages: from app version 10.24, videos you send in DMs are downloadable unless you turn off the same setting before sending; it can’t be changed after.
  • X says accounts under 18 have downloads turned off automatically. Even with downloads off, people can still share a link to your post.

How to know it worked

  • Our check: your video uploads and plays, and autoplay and captions work the way you set them.
