How to Report or Block Someone on YouTube: Videos, Channels, Comments, Live Chat and Harassment

YouTube says reports are anonymous: the person can’t see who reported them. Reported content isn’t removed automatically; YouTube reviews it and removes anything that breaks the Community Guidelines. To stop someone reaching you, you can block their channel (comments, live chat and mentions), and creators can hide a user from their channel without them being told.

Quick answer

Report a video: below it, More > Report, pick a reason. Short: More (bottom right) > Report. Comment: More next to it > Report. Channel: on the channel page, …more in the description > Report user. Block someone: in live chat tap their message > Block, or from a mention notification > More > Block this user. Unblock: myaccount.google.com/blocklist. Creators: More on a comment > Hide from channel.

Does this match what you see?

  • Someone is harassing you in comments or live chat.
  • A video or channel breaks YouTube’s rules.
  • Someone is pretending to be you or sharing your private information.

Why this happens: the possible causes

Report, block or hide: what each does.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Report a video or Short

Safe & reversible1 minComputer (browser)iPhone & iPadAndroid

YouTube says videos can be reported any time after upload and are reviewed 24/7.

  1. Video: sign in, open it, click More below the video > Report, choose the reason, then Report.
  2. Short: open it, click or tap More (bottom right) > Report, choose the reason > Next, add details like timestamps if you want, then Report.
  3. On a TV: in the YouTube app, open the video > Settings > Report.

Did it work? You see the report confirmation.

Fix 2: Report a comment, post or live chat message

Safe & reversible1 minComputer (browser)iPhone & iPadAndroid

YouTube lets you report individual comments, Community posts and chat messages.

  1. Comment: next to it, More > Report, choose a reason > Report.
  2. Community post: More (top right of the post) > Report.
  3. Live chat: hover over (or tap) the message > More > Report.

Did it work? The report is submitted.

Fix 3: Report a channel or user

Safe & reversible2 minComputer (browser)

YouTube says a channel report covers its profile photo, handle and description, not its videos.

Computer (browser)

  1. Open the channel page and click …more in the description.
  2. Click Report user, then choose Report user, Report channel art or Report profile picture (or Hide user from my channel).
  3. Pick a reason > Next, add details if you want > Next > Submit.

Problem is a specific video? YouTube says report the video itself, since channel reports don’t review videos.

Did it work? You’ve submitted the report.

Fix 4: Block (or unblock) a channel

Safe & reversible1 minAndroid

YouTube says a blocked channel can no longer see your live chat messages or comments, or receive your mentions (steps from YouTube’s Android page).

  1. In live chat: sign in to the app, tap their message > Block.
  2. From a mention: Notifications (top right) > Mentions > More next to their mention > Block this user > Block.
  3. Unblock: go to myaccount.google.com/blocklist and remove them.

YouTube says blocking on YouTube also blocks that account in other Google products. If you use YouTube Studio, you can still see a blocked channel’s comments on your channel.

Did it work? You no longer see their messages.

Creators: hide a user from your channel

YouTube says hiding stops a user’s comments, live chats and posts showing on your channel, and stops them making clips of your videos. They aren’t notified.

  • From a comment: More next to it > Hide from channel.
  • In YouTube Studio: copy their channel URL, then Settings > Community moderation > User management, paste it into Hidden users under Automated Filters, and Save.
  • Unhide: same place, click Remove next to their name > Save.

More moderation tools (blocked words, holding comments, link filters) are in YouTube comments not showing.

What happens after you report

YouTube says reported content is reviewed, not removed automatically. Content that breaks the Community Guidelines is removed; content that may not suit younger viewers may be age-restricted. Check progress in your Report history. If no violation is found, more reports won’t change the outcome.

Privacy, impersonation, harassment and legal reports

  • Harassment: YouTube says its harassment policy covers prolonged or malicious insults, threats, bullying, doxxing and encouraging abusive fan behavior. Report the specific videos, comments or messages.
  • Your private information shared without permission: use YouTube’s privacy complaint process.
  • Someone pretending to be you or your channel: YouTube has a separate impersonation report.
  • Legal issues (like copyright or trademark): More > Report > Legal issue, choose the issue > Next, and submit the form. YouTube says misusing legal forms can lead to account termination.
  • Bad ads: see report an ad.

How to know it worked

  • You’ve reported the content or blocked or hidden the person.
