YouTube Comments Not Showing? Why Your Comment Disappeared or Comments Are Off

A missing YouTube comment usually hasn’t vanished. It may just be hidden in Top comments, so YouTube says to switch to Newest first. If it isn’t there either, the channel may be holding it for review (YouTube holds potentially inappropriate comments by default), it may contain a blocked word, or YouTube’s systems may have treated it as spam or removed it for breaking the Community Guidelines. Separately, some videos have comments turned off or paused entirely, for reasons YouTube lists below.

Quick answer

Open the comments and switch the sort to Newest, then scroll for your comment. If it isn’t there, YouTube says the channel may have moderated it (held for review, removed, or caught by a blocked word), or YouTube may have removed it for a policy violation. YouTube also says posting many comments quickly, repeating the same comment, adding links, or using lots of emoji or unusual characters can get comments flagged as spam. If you can’t comment at all, comments may be turned off: by the creator, because the video is made for kids, because Restricted Mode is on, or for safety reasons.

Does this match what you see?

  • Your comment showed for you, but others can’t see it.
  • Your comment isn’t in Top comments.
  • A video says comments are turned off.
  • You can’t post new comments, but old ones are still visible.

Why this happens: the possible causes

The reasons YouTube gives for comments that don’t show, or can’t be posted.

Comment problem and likely reason
What’s happeningLikely reason
Not in Top commentsSort by Newest
Not in Newest eitherHeld, blocked word or removed
Comments turned offCreator, Made for Kids, Restricted Mode or safety
Can’t post, old comments still thereComments paused
  • It’s hidden by the Top comments sortCheck this first

YouTube says Top comments are ranked by what viewers are likely to value, and both Top and Members views may hide comments detected as potentially inappropriate, spam or impersonation.

  • The channel is holding or blocking itCheck this first

YouTube says channels can hold all comments, or potentially inappropriate ones, for review (the latter is the default), and can block words and phrases.

  • It looked like spamPossible

YouTube says many comments in a short time, repeated comments, links, or lots of emoji or unusual characters may be flagged as spam.

  • YouTube removed itPossible

YouTube says automated systems scan comments for Community Guidelines violations, and reported comments that break the rules are removed.

Try these 60-second checks first

  • Switch the comments sort from Top to Newest.
  • If you’ve posted several comments quickly, slow down: YouTube may treat that as spam.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Look for your comment under Newest

Safe & reversible1 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

YouTube says if you can’t find your comment under Top comments, sort by Newest.

  1. Open the video and go to the comments.
  2. Change the sort to Newest (on Android, tap Comments, then Newest).
  3. Scroll to find your comment.

YouTube says if it isn’t in the Newest view either, the channel may have moderated it, or YouTube may have removed it for a policy violation.

Did it work? Your comment appears in the Newest list.

Fix 2: Avoid looking like spam

Safe & reversible1 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

YouTube lists behaviors that may get a comment flagged as spam.

  1. Don’t post lots of comments in a short time.
  2. Don’t post the same comment over and over.
  3. Leave out links where you can.
  4. Avoid lots of emoji or unusual characters.

Did it work? New comments appear normally under Newest.

Why your comment isn’t showing

  • Held for review: YouTube says channels can hold all comments, or just potentially inappropriate ones, for review. Potentially inappropriate comments are held by default.
  • Blocked words: channels can block specific words and phrases, and a comment containing one won’t show.
  • Removed by the channel: a channel can remove your comment.
  • Removed by YouTube: automated systems scan comments for Community Guidelines violations. YouTube says you may get a notification that your comment was removed, or that commenting is paused for your account.
  • Reported: a comment someone reports that breaks the Community Guidelines is removed.
  • Filtered from Top or Members views: YouTube says both views may hide comments detected as potentially inappropriate, spam or impersonation. Members comments (newest first) are only on Android.

Why comments are turned off on a video

  • The creator turned them off.
  • Made for kids: comments are turned off on videos or channels set as made for kids.
  • Restricted Mode: YouTube says comments may be off if you or your system administrator have turned on Restricted Mode.
  • Safety: YouTube may turn off comments for safety reasons, such as protecting minors. YouTube says this doesn’t mean the video breaks the Community Guidelines.
  • Art Tracks: comments on automatically generated Art Tracks are off if the main artist doesn’t have an Official Artist Channel.
  • Shared in a post: a video shared in a post can have comments turned off by the creator or by YouTube.

YouTube’s page doesn’t list anything viewers can do to turn comments back on. If Restricted Mode is on for your own account, that part is in your control.

Comments are paused

YouTube says creators can pause comments instead of turning them off, for example to deal with a sudden surge. While paused, no one can post new comments, but existing comments stay up. Comment authors can still delete their own comments, and the channel can delete or report existing ones. The creator can unpause later.

For creators: comments missing on your videos

  • YouTube says if comments are removed on your videos, Community Guidelines violations were most likely detected.
  • You can turn comments on or off for each video or post in YouTube Studio.
  • If YouTube turned comments off temporarily, YouTube says to update the video’s comment settings to make them appear again. Depending on the content, you may be able to turn them back on.
  • If you turn comments back on and minors appear in any of your videos, YouTube says you should hold and carefully review all new comments.
  • Check your own held for review queue: YouTube holds potentially inappropriate comments by default.

How to know it worked

  • Your comment appears under Newest, or you know which rule is stopping it.
