Quick answer
In the X app, tap your profile icon > Settings and privacy > Notifications > Preferences > Push notifications, and turn on the types you want. Our tip: then make sure X is allowed to send notifications in your phone’s settings. For one account’s posts, open their profile, tap the notification icon and choose All posts or Only posts with live video.

Why this happens: the possible causes
Our note: likely reasons, based on the settings X describes.
| What you see | Check |
|---|---|
| No notifications at all | X and phone notification settings |
| Some types missing | Push notification types |
| No alert for one account | Account notification icon |
- A notification type is off in XCheck this first
X lets you choose which types of push notifications you receive in Settings and privacy > Notifications > Preferences > Push notifications.
- Notifications blocked on your phoneCheck this first
Our note: if your phone doesn’t allow notifications for X, none arrive, whatever X’s settings say.
- Account alerts not setPossible
X says post and live video alerts from an account are turned on from that account’s profile.
Try these 60-second checks first
- Open Settings and privacy > Notifications > Preferences > Push notifications in X.
- Our tip: check X is allowed to send notifications in your phone’s settings, and that Do Not Disturb or Focus isn’t on.
- Our tip: update the X app.
How to fix it, step by step
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.
Fix 1: Turn X push notifications back on
X says you choose which types of mobile notifications you want in its push notification settings.
- In the top menu, tap your profile icon.
- Select Settings and privacy.
- Tap Notifications, then Preferences.
- Tap Push notifications and turn on the types you want to receive.
iPhone & iPad
- Our tip: then open your iPhone’s Settings > Notifications > X and make sure Allow Notifications is on.
Android
- Our tip: then open your phone’s Settings > Apps > X > Notifications and make sure they’re allowed. Menu names vary by phone.
On iPhone, X also points to its iOS app troubleshooting steps: see X app not working on iPhone or iPad.
Did it work? Our check: you get a notification the next time someone replies, mentions you or follows you.
Did Fix 1 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 1. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Fix 2: Some notifications missing? Check the quality filter and advanced filters
X says the quality filter hides lower-quality notifications, such as duplicate or automated-looking posts, and it’s on by default if you’re new or reinstalled the app. Advanced filters can also hide notifications from whole types of accounts.
- Check the tab at the top of Notifications: X says All shows everything, Mentions only mentions, and Verified only posts from blue-checkmark accounts.
iPhone & iPad
- In Notifications, tap the gear icon and turn Quality filter off (or on).
- Tap Advanced filters and turn off any filters hiding accounts you want to hear from.
Android
- In Notifications, tap the gear icon and check or uncheck Quality filter.
- Tap Advanced filters, and uncheck any filters you don’t want.
Computer (browser)
- Go to Notifications > Settings, and check or uncheck Quality filter.
- Click Advanced filters, and uncheck any filters you don’t want.
X says the quality filter doesn’t hide notifications from people you follow or accounts you’ve recently interacted with. Advanced filters can hide notifications from accounts that are new, don’t follow you, you don’t follow, have a default profile photo, or have no confirmed email or phone (only accounts you don’t follow). X says muted words can also filter notifications, and muted accounts you don’t follow won’t show in Notifications; see mute.
Did it work? Our check: the notifications you expected now appear under All.
Did Fix 2 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 2. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Fix 3: Get alerts when an account posts or goes live
X says you can turn on post notifications from accounts you follow whose posts or live videos you don’t want to miss.
- Go to the account’s profile.
- Tap the notification icon.
- Choose All posts or Only posts with live video.
To see these alerts, X says to go to Settings and privacy > Notifications > Preferences > Push notifications > Posts. Our tip: make sure that type is on. X’s video help page also covers live video notifications on Android: see X videos.
Did it work? Our check: the notification icon on their profile is highlighted, and you get an alert when they next post.
Did Fix 3 solve it?
Great, you fixed it with Fix 3. Tell us it worked, or bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Stop post alerts from an account
X says go to the account’s profile, tap the highlighted notification icon, and select None.
Email notifications: turn them off or on
- Go to Settings and privacy > Notifications > Email notifications, turn Email notifications on or off, and tick or untick the types you want. X says changes save automatically.
- Quick way to stop one type: click unsubscribe at the bottom of an X email. X says that turns off that particular type.
- Activity digest: X sends one digest email for your unread notifications instead of separate emails. Turn it on or off on x.com under Email notifications with Email me when I have new notifications. X says the digest doesn’t cover Direct Messages: you get an email for each new DM if that’s turned on.
X says you can opt out of most emails, but it still sends service and account messages, such as asking you to confirm your email or telling you about a password change. Our advice: if you get a password-change email you didn’t expect, secure your account.
Not notified about every like or reply? X says that’s expected: it may not notify you about every repost, reply, mention, like or follow, for example mentions by new accounts or accounts without a confirmed email.
Which notifications X can send
X lists these among the mobile notification types you can choose:
- Mentions of your account, including photos you’re tagged in
- Replies, reposts of your posts, and likes
- New followers and Direct Messages
- Your contacts who join X
- Recommendations, Highlights, News and Moments
- Spaces
- Crisis and emergency alerts
- First look at new features
- Post notifications from accounts you follow (see above)
Our tip: if you’re getting too many notifications, turn off the types you don’t need in Push notifications rather than turning X notifications off on your phone, so you keep the important ones like DMs.
How to know it worked
- Our check: notifications arrive on your phone for the types you turned on.
Still not working? Your next steps
- Our tip: update X, restart your phone, and log out and back in.
- Can’t log in? See can’t log in to X. Account limited? See account locked or limited.
