Why this happens: the possible causes
What each setting does.
| You want to | Do this |
|---|---|
| Hide your location from everyone | Turn on Ghost Mode |
| Stop sharing the music you’re playing | Pause Now Playing |
| Share with only some friends | Change who can see your location |
| Hide your location from one person | Use My Friends, Except... or block them |
| Turn Snap Map off completely | Not possible once set up; use Ghost Mode |
- Snap Map can’t be switched offCheck this first
Snapchat says once you’ve set up Snap Map for the first time, you can’t disable it altogether.
- Snaps submitted to the MapPossible
Snapchat says Snaps you submit to Snap Map can still show up, whatever location setting you choose.
Try these 60-second checks first
- Snapchat says Snap Map can currently only be viewed in the mobile app, not Snapchat for Web.
- Snapchat says only friends you’ve chosen to share your location with can see where you are on Snap Map.
How to fix it, step by step
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.
Fix 1: Turn on Ghost Mode
Snapchat says Ghost Mode hides your location from everyone else on the Map.
- Open the Map (swipe right twice from the Camera screen).
- Tap the gear icon in the bottom right corner to open Map Settings.
- Turn on Ghost Mode.
- Choose how long to stay in Ghost Mode: 3 hours, 24 hours or Until Turned Off. Snapchat says some Snapchatters may see these timer options.
Snapchat says your location is still shared with Snap in Ghost Mode; it just isn’t visible to anyone else on the Map. You can turn Ghost Mode on and off at any time.
Did it work? Snapchat says your Bitmoji holds up a blue sign with a ghost icon while you’re in Ghost Mode, unless you’re sharing your live location.

How to open Snap Map
Snapchat says to swipe right twice from the Camera screen to open Snap Map. It says Snap Map can currently only be viewed in the Snapchat mobile app, not on a web browser.
Choose who can see your location
Snapchat says location sharing on Snap Map is off by default, and only the friends you choose can see your location. To change who can see it:
- Open Snap Map and tap the gear icon in the bottom right corner to open Map Settings. (If you’ve linked Spotify, Snapchat says this page is titled Who Can See My Location and Music.)
- Choose who can see your location: My Friends (all your friends), My Friends, Except... (all friends except a select few), Only These Friends... (specific friends you pick), or Ghost Mode (hidden from everyone).
Snapchat says you’ll also see Snap Map information in Profiles when you share your location with friends, and your location may appear in screenshots and Map Snaps your friends take.
Pause music sharing (Now Playing)
If you’ve linked Spotify, Snapchat says a Now Playing section appears below your location settings in Map Settings, showing whether you’re sharing music (for example, “Sharing from Spotify”). Snapchat says you can pause it for a set time:
- Go to Map Settings.
- Under Now Playing, tap your linked music app.
- Turn off Share Now Playing.
- Choose how long to pause: 3 hours, 24 hours or Until Turned Off. Snapchat says sharing resumes automatically when the timer ends.
What Ghost Mode doesn’t hide
- Snapchat says your location is still shared with Snap itself.
- Snapchat says your location may appear in screenshots and Map Snaps that your friends take.
- Snapchat warns that Snaps you submit to Snap Map can still show up on the Map, whatever location setting you choose.
How to know it worked
- Your Bitmoji holds up a blue sign with a ghost icon on the Map (unless you’re sharing your live location).
