Snapchat Notifications Not Working? Fixes for Phone and Snapchat for Web

If Snapchat isn’t notifying you about new Snaps, Chats or calls, check that notifications are allowed in Snapchat and in your phone’s or computer’s settings. Below are Snapchat’s own steps for iPhone, Android and Snapchat for Web, plus a few standard phone checks marked as our advice.

Quick answer

On a phone: in Snapchat, go to Settings > Notifications and turn on the alerts you want. Snapchat says your phone’s own settings may also need to allow Snapchat notifications (on iPhone, Story notifications need this). Our advice: also check Do Not Disturb or Focus isn’t on, and that Snapchat is up to date. On Snapchat for Web: Snapchat says to click your Bitmoji and confirm notifications are on, allow notifications for web.snapchat.com in your browser, and check your computer lets your browser show notifications.

Does this match what you see?

  • You don’t get alerts for new Snaps or Chats.
  • Calls don’t ring.
  • Snapchat for Web doesn’t show notifications.

iPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Snapchat for Web steps are based on Snapchat Support “I’m having trouble with browser notifications on Snapchat for Web” , “I’m having trouble with OS notifications on Snapchat for Web” and “How to Change Snapchat for Web Permissions” (supplied by the site owner). iPhone and Android in-app steps from “How do I control my Snapchat notifications on iOS?” and “…on Android?”; other phone checks are our own advice. Menu names vary by phone.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Check notifications on your phone

Safe & reversible3 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

Our advice: check both Snapchat’s in-app notification settings and your phone’s own settings. Steps marked as our advice are standard phone settings.

iPhone & iPad

  1. In Snapchat, tap your profile icon > the gear icon > Notifications, and turn on the toggle for each type of notification you want. For Stories you follow, tap Manage Story Notifications, choose the people and tap Done. Snapchat says Story notifications need Snapchat notifications turned on in your iPhone’s settings.
  2. Our advice: in your iPhone’s Settings > Notifications > Snapchat, turn on Allow Notifications.
  3. Our advice: turn off Focus or Do Not Disturb, or allow Snapchat in it.
  4. Our advice: update Snapchat from the App Store and restart your iPhone.

Android

  1. In Snapchat, tap the gear icon on your Profile to open Settings > Notifications, and make sure the notifications you want are checked. Snapchat says that on some phones you need to turn on notifications in your phone’s settings first.
  2. Our advice: in your phone’s Settings > Apps > Snapchat > Notifications, turn them on.
  3. Our advice: turn off Do Not Disturb, check battery saver isn’t restricting Snapchat, update Snapchat and restart your phone.

Apple Watch: Snapchat says to use the Watch app on your iPhone; if Mirror iPhone Alerts is off for Snapchat, you won’t get alerts on your watch. If these checks don’t help, see Snapchat not working to report it.

Did it work? You get an alert when a friend sends you a Snap or Chat.

Fix 2: Fix notifications on Snapchat for Web

Safe & reversible3 minComputer (browser)

These are Snapchat’s steps if you’re not notified about incoming Chats and calls on Snapchat for Web.

  1. Click your Bitmoji at the top left and confirm notifications are turned on.
  2. Chrome or Edge: click the lock icon in the address bar, turn on Notifications, and refresh the page. No toggle? Click Site settings (Chrome) or Permissions for this site (Edge).
  3. Safari: Safari > Settings > Websites > Notifications, and set web.snapchat.com to Allow.
  4. Check your computer lets your browser show notifications (below).

Did it work? You get a notification for a new Chat or call.

No notifications from one friend or group? Check it’s not muted

Our tip: if you get alerts from everyone except one person, you may have muted them. Snapchat’s steps to check:

  1. Open the Chat screen and press and hold the friend’s name.
  2. Tap Chat and Notification Settings > Notification Settings.
  3. Turn Mute Chats and Mute Calls off to get their notifications again (or on to mute them).

Group chats

Press and hold the group on the Chat screen > Chat and Notification Settings, and turn off Mute Chats. Snapchat also lets you choose which alerts you get: under Chat Notifications, pick Chats and Snaps or Mentions Only, or press and hold the group > Chat Settings > Message Notifications, pick All Messages, Mentions Only or Silent. Our note: with Mentions Only or Silent, expect fewer alerts.

Story notifications

To get alerts when a friend or group posts to their Story, Snapchat says to open the Chat screen, tap and hold the chat or group chat, tap Story Settings and turn on Story Notifications. You can also manage some friend notifications from their Friendship Profile.

Getting notifications while logged out?

Snapchat says you may still get a few reminders, such as unread messages or friend Story updates, after logging out, if your account is still saved on the login screen for one-tap login and your phone allows Snapchat notifications. It says the text is generic and doesn’t show private content or who sent it. To stop them:

  • Log back in, or remove your account from the login screen if you don’t want one-tap login on that device.
  • Turn off Snapchat notifications in your phone’s settings, or specific types in Snapchat.
  • If you stay logged out, Snapchat says they stop after about 28 days.

Let your browser show notifications (Windows, Mac, ChromeOS)

Snapchat’s steps for letting your browser show notifications:

  • Windows 11: Start > Settings > System > Notifications, and turn on notifications, banners and sounds for Chrome or Edge.
  • Windows 10: Start > Settings > System > Notifications & actions, and turn Chrome or Edge on.
  • Mac: Apple menu > System Settings > Notifications, find your browser and turn on Allow notifications.
  • ChromeOS: click the notifications tray at the bottom right, open notifications, and make sure web.snapchat.com is checked.

How to know it worked

  • You get Snapchat notifications again on your phone or computer.
