How to fix it, step by step

Fix 1: “Oops, couldn’t load any videos”: sign out and back in
In a YouTube For Families Help Community thread, the answer marked Recommended (from another user, not Google) said this fixed the error, and other parents confirmed it.
- In YouTube Kids, open Settings (the lock icon).
- Choose Use YouTube Kids signed out, then Sign out.
- Sign back in. You’ll go through the setup screens again.
The parent in the thread saw it on several iPhones and iPads, and restarting didn’t help.
Did it work? Videos load on the home screen.

Can’t create a kid’s profile, or it disappeared
- Birthday not verified: YouTube says the parent’s Google Account birthday must be verified as over 18, or it can’t be used to sign in to YouTube Kids.
- Not signed in: kid profiles only appear in the YouTube Kids app while a parent is signed in. To add one, tap the profile picker (top left) > Get Started, choose your account, give consent and your password, then enter your child’s name and age.
- Profile vanished during setup: YouTube says partly created profiles are deleted after 3 days. Start again.
- Can’t add another: YouTube allows up to 8 profiles per account.
- Switch profiles: sign in, tap Profile at the bottom, and choose the avatar on Choose a profile.
- Delete a profile: in YouTube Kids Settings, choose the child’s profile and enter your password, then More (⋮) > Delete this profile. Or in Family Center (YouTube You > Settings > Family Center) > the profile > More > Delete profile.
- Search is missing: with Approve content yourself, children can only watch what you approve and can’t search. For age levels, see content levels by age.
Lock each child’s profile so siblings can’t use it
A parent of three asked how to stop one child opening another’s profile. The answer marked Recommended in the YouTube For Families Help Community (from another user, not Google) was to give each profile its own secret code:
- Choose the profile you want to lock and tap Edit underneath it.
- Tap the Settings icon (top right).
- Under Secret code, enter a 4-digit code of your choice.
YouTube’s own help confirms the secret code is a child setting: it says a parent can’t set it, but can reset it. Children change it from their avatar > Edit > Settings. Other things children can change themselves include their name, avatar, casting, clearing history, captions and Autoplay (unless you’ve turned Autoplay off).
Our tip: this is separate from the parent passcode that protects Settings. Use different codes, and repeat for each child.
Videos buffering or using too much data
On a phone or tablet, YouTube Kids lets you choose the video quality: tap More at the top of the video > Quality, then Auto (YouTube’s recommended setting) or Data saver. Our tip: use Data saver on mobile data; for other playback problems, see YouTube videos not playing.
Kid’s profile on a TV keeps sending you back to YouTube Kids
In August 2025, parents reported a loop on TVs: switching to a child’s profile in the YouTube app said to use YouTube Kids, while YouTube Kids sent them back to the YouTube app. In the YouTube For Families Help Community, a Platinum Product Expert (a volunteer, not Google staff) later said Google’s team had fully rolled out a fix, and suggested:
- Update the YouTube app on the TV, then sign back in.
- Still looping? Clear the app’s cache, then uninstall and reinstall it.
Our note: if it still happens, post in the YouTube For Families Help Community so the team can see it. YouTube says choosing a kid’s profile on a TV is meant to open YouTube Kids.
How to know it worked
- YouTube Kids loads videos, and only you can open Settings.
Still not working? Your next steps
- Choosing between YouTube Kids and a supervised account, or changing content levels? See YouTube parental controls. Signing in on a TV? See can’t sign in to YouTube.
