Quick answer
With protected posts, X says only your followers see your posts, new followers must be approved, followers can’t repost or quote them, and they won’t appear in Google. Accounts that already followed you keep access unless you block them. Unprotecting makes all past protected posts public. If posts that were always protected show up in search, X says change your password and revoke untrusted apps right away, then report it.
Does this match what you see?
- Followers can’t repost or quote your posts.
- People you reply to don’t see your replies.
- Old posts still appear in Google after protecting your account.
- Protected posts appear somewhere public.

Why this happens: the possible causes
Our note: most “problems” with protected posts are how the setting is designed to work.
| What you notice | Why |
|---|---|
| Followers can’t repost | Reposting is turned off |
| Replies unseen | Only your followers see your posts |
| Still in Google | Old public copies |
| Always-protected posts public | Possible account access |
- Protected posts are followers-onlyCheck this first
X says protected posts and their permanent links are visible only to your followers.
- Posts were public beforeCheck this first
Our note: search engines may still show copies of posts that were public before. X says it can’t remove content from websites other than x.com.
- Third-party app or account accessPossible
X says a third-party app you authorized may see your protected posts. Our note: X’s advice to change your password suggests someone else may have access.
Try these 60-second checks first
- Check whether your posts are protected: Settings and privacy > Privacy and safety > Audience and tagging > Protect your posts.
- Our tip: review your follower list and connected apps.
How to fix it, step by step
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.
Fix 1: Always-protected posts showing up in search
X says if your posts have never been public, they should never show up in X search or public search engines.
- Change your password immediately. See can’t log in to X.
- Revoke untrusted third-party apps. See remove connected apps.
- File a report with X including: when it started, where you saw your private posts (X search, Google, etc.), and a list of all third-party apps you use.
Did it work? Our check: your password is new, only trusted apps are connected, and your report is submitted.

Turn protected posts on or off
- Protect (iPhone): tap your profile photo > Settings and privacy > Privacy and safety, then under Audience and tagging, drag the Protect your posts slider on.
- Protect (Android): tap the navigation menu or profile icon > Settings and privacy > Privacy and safety, then under Audience and tagging, check the box next to Protect your posts.
- Protect (x.com): click the more icon > Settings and privacy > Privacy and safety > Audience and tagging, and check the box next to Protect your posts.
- Unprotect: in the same place, turn off Protect your posts in the app, or uncheck Protect my posts on the web.
- X says unprotecting makes all your previously protected posts public.
- Before you unprotect: X says review your pending follow requests. They aren’t accepted automatically; if you leave them pending, those people will need to follow you again.
What changes when you protect your posts
- New people must request to follow you, and you approve or deny each request.
- Your posts, including their permanent links, are visible only to your followers.
- Followers can’t repost or quote your posts.
- Protected posts won’t appear in search engines like Google, and on X only you and your followers can search them.
- Replies you send to an account that doesn’t follow you won’t be seen by that account.
- Links in protected posts are shortened to t.co links, and X says anyone with that t.co link can open the destination. Links to media aren’t protected either: anyone with the link can view it.
Old followers can still see your posts
X says accounts that followed you before you protected your posts can still see and interact with them unless you block them. Our tip: remove or block anyone you don’t want seeing your posts.
Old or deleted posts still show in Google
- X says your earlier public posts stop being public on X and leave public X search once you protect your account. Someone who had a post on their Home timeline before you changed the setting may still see it, but can’t interact with it or see its details.
- Protected posts: X says public posts from before you protected your account may still be indexed by search engines; only posts after that are protected.
- Deleted posts: X says Google and other search engines cache results, so old posts can stay searchable for a while. Clicking an old link shows X’s “That page doesn’t exist!” error.
- X says it doesn’t control third-party search results and can’t remove content from websites other than x.com.
Ask Google to update its results sooner
X says Google will update eventually, but you can speed it up:
- Copy the X link you want removed from Google.
- Go to Google’s remove outdated content page (external site, opens in a new tab), paste the link and submit. X says you may need to sign in to a Google account.
- More help: removing your content from Google (external site, opens in a new tab).
Show up less in search engines
X says the words in your profile and public posts may be indexed. To keep certain information out of search results, X suggests changing your display name, changing your username, or protecting your posts.
Switching back to public
X says unprotecting your posts makes all your previously protected posts public. Our advice: delete anything you don’t want public before switching.
How to know it worked
- Our check: only followers you approved can see your posts, and no untrusted apps are connected.
Still not working? Your next steps
- Think someone else is in your account? See can’t log in to X.
- Someone posted your private information? See report private information.
