How to fix it, step by step
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.
Fix 1: Opt out of Grok training
X says this controls whether your public data and your Grok interactions, inputs and results are used to train and fine-tune xAI’s models.
- In X settings, select Privacy and safety.
- Scroll to Data sharing and personalization and select Grok & Third-party Collaborators.
- Under Data Sharing, untick Allow your public data as well as your interactions, inputs, and results with Grok and xAI to be used for training and fine-tuning.
X says you can still use Grok after opting out. But features powered by Grok (such as X recommendations) still learn from normal use, and if you give thumbs up or down feedback on a conversation, X and xAI may use that conversation for training. X recommends not giving feedback if you don’t want that.

Keep your posts out of Grok
X says making your account private keeps your posts out of training for Grok and xAI’s models, and stops them being surfaced in Grok’s answers. Go to Settings and privacy > Privacy and safety > Audience and tagging and turn on Protect your posts. See protected posts for what else changes.
Can’t find Grok?
X says Grok is on iOS, Android and the web in every country where X is available. Select the Grok icon in the navigation bar, then type or pick a suggestion. Our tip: if it’s missing, update the X app.
Grok in X Chat and Grok Bot
- X says X Chat conversations are end-to-end encrypted, but if you add @Grok to a chat, X and SpaceXAI (which provides the feature) can access every message sent after Grok joins, until it’s removed.
- X says Grok Bot in X Chat can sign in to tools you select and work through tasks you direct, and asks before it acts: you can allow once, always allow, or deny. It’s covered by the Cursor Privacy Policy. X says you’re responsible for what you ask it to do and it may make mistakes. Its data is kept for the life of your Grok Bot account unless you delete the bot in its settings.
- The same training opt-out setting covers Grok Bot.
How Grok answers
X says Grok can decide to search public X posts and do a real-time web search to answer you. X says it doesn’t sell your data, and you can make a data privacy request through its Privacy Policy inquiries.
