Quick answer
Can’t post? WhatsApp says you need a strong connection and at least 1 GB of free storage, and videos must be 3GP or MP4 and up to 90 seconds (longer ones are cut). Can’t see someone’s status? It may have expired, been deleted, or their status privacy may not include you. WhatsApp also suggests you save each other’s numbers.
Does this match what you see?
- Your status won’t upload or keeps failing.
- Status photos or videos look blurry or pixelated.
- A long video only posts the first part.
- You can’t see a friend’s status, or you see “this status is no longer available.”
- You can’t see who viewed your status.

Why this happens: the possible causes
The usual reasons, from WhatsApp’s pages.
| Problem | Usual cause |
|---|---|
| Won’t upload | Connection, storage or file |
| Blurry | Compression and connection |
| Video cut short | 90-second limit |
| Can’t see their status | Privacy, contacts or blocking |
| Can’t see views | Read receipts off |

WhatsApp says you need at least 1 GB of free space to share a status.
- Status privacyCheck this first
WhatsApp says if you can’t see someone’s status, they may have changed their status privacy settings or not included you in their audience.
Try these 60-second checks first
- Check you have a strong Wi-Fi or mobile data connection.
- Make sure you have at least 1 GB free.
- Update WhatsApp and restart your phone.
How to fix it, step by step
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.
Fix 1: Your status won’t post or upload
WhatsApp lists connection, storage and the media file as causes to check.
- Make sure you have a strong mobile data or Wi-Fi connection, and try switching between them. See WhatsApp not connecting if needed.
- Free up space: WhatsApp says you need at least 1 GB free to share a status. See WhatsApp storage full.
- Check the photo or video isn’t corrupt, and that videos are 3GP or MP4 (WhatsApp’s other pages say 3GP and MPEG-4).
- Restart your phone, and update WhatsApp to the latest version.
Did it work? Our check: your status appears under My status in the Updates tab.

Fix 2: You can’t see someone’s status
WhatsApp lists privacy settings, contacts, blocking and connection among the reasons.
- Their status privacy may not include you. WhatsApp suggests asking them to check, or whether you’re in their status audience.
- Make sure you’ve saved each other’s numbers, in full international format. On iPhone, allow WhatsApp full contacts access. If you have more than one account, use the number your contacts saved.
- If you blocked them, WhatsApp says you won’t see their status updates.
- Check your connection and that you have at least 1 GB free (WhatsApp says you need this to view statuses), then reset WhatsApp’s app permissions (make sure they’re all on), restart your phone and update WhatsApp.
Our note: they might not have posted a status, or you might have muted their updates. If you can’t see someone’s name or profile either, see WhatsApp contacts not showing.
Did it work? Our check: their status appears in your Updates tab.
Did Fix 2 solve it?

“This status is no longer available”
WhatsApp says you might see this, or not be able to open a status, when:
- The status expired: statuses are only available for 24 hours.
- The person deleted it.
- It was taken down for breaking WhatsApp’s Terms of Service.
Mentioned in a status you can’t see? WhatsApp suggests asking the person to share it with you again.
Blurry or low-quality status photos and videos
WhatsApp says HD media isn’t supported for statuses, and media is usually compressed, so it may look blurry, grainy or pixelated compared with the original. A weak connection can also make uploaded photos look blurry. WhatsApp suggests uploading high-quality images to start with.
Video cut off at 90 seconds
WhatsApp says status videos can be up to 90 seconds long, and if you upload a longer video, only the first 90 seconds are shared. Use the slider at the top to trim it to the part you want before you send.
Can’t see who viewed your status, or replies are missing
- Views: WhatsApp says if you or the viewer turned off read receipts, you won’t see status views. Turn yours on in privacy settings. To check views, open Updates > My status, tap the status, then the eye icon. People who liked it show a green heart.
- No sound on a status? See WhatsApp no sound.
- Replies: WhatsApp says you won’t see replies if your privacy settings don’t allow messages from those contacts, or if the person replying isn’t in your status audience.
View, like, reply or react to a status
- View: tap Updates (on WhatsApp Web or Windows, click the Status icon), then a profile picture. On a phone, WhatsApp says new statuses have a green border and viewed ones a gray border.
- Can’t find someone’s status? On a phone, WhatsApp says statuses you’ve hidden are under Hidden updates (or swipe left on statuses and tap Hidden); this section only appears when someone you hid has a live status. On WhatsApp Web and Windows, statuses from muted contacts are under Muted: click Show.
- Like: while the status is showing, tap the heart. WhatsApp says the person sees a green heart next to your picture when they check views. Its Web page says likes aren’t available on WhatsApp Web for now, and its Windows page doesn’t list liking.
- Reply: swipe up or tap Reply (Web and Windows: click Type a Reply…). WhatsApp says replies go to your chat with that person, labeled Status. On a phone you can reply with text, photos, files, emojis or a voice recording; on Web and Windows, with text and emojis.
- React: on Android, swipe up or tap Reply and tap one of the emojis shown (Web and Windows: click Type a Reply…, then an emoji). On iPhone, tap the emoji icon near the top of the screen and pick one. On a phone you can also react with a sticker, GIF or your avatar (only if you’ve created one); on Web and Windows, with emojis and stickers. WhatsApp says a reaction is sent as soon as you tap it.
- View privately: WhatsApp says people can see you viewed their status unless you or they turned off read receipts.
- Your old statuses: WhatsApp says your statuses are now archived, keeping your own statuses and their views, likes and reactions after the 24-hour viewing window ends.
WhatsApp says some of these features are still being built and tested, so keep WhatsApp updated.
Edit, save or delete your status
Edit
WhatsApp’s Android page says you can edit a status caption within 15 minutes of posting it, but not the photo, video or audience. Tap Updates > My status > the status > the edit icon next to the caption, make your changes, then tap the done icon. If there’s no caption, there’s no edit option. Its iPhone, Web, Windows and Mac pages say you can’t edit statuses, but you can delete one and share a new update.
Delete
- Phone: tap Updates > My status, tap the status, tap the menu, then Delete > Delete (iPhone: Delete 1 status update).
- Mac: click Updates > My status, click the status > More > Delete > Delete 1 status update.
- WhatsApp Web or Windows: click the Status icon > My status, click the menu while the status is showing, then Delete > Delete.
- WhatsApp says you can’t delete several statuses at once, and a contact with connection issues might still see a deleted update.
- Deleted a status with mentions? WhatsApp’s iPhone, Web and Mac pages say the mentioned people might not see it; its Android page says it won’t be visible to them any longer.
Save
On a phone, tap Updates > My status, tap the status, then the menu > Save. On Windows, click Updates > My status, click the status, then the menu > Download. On a Mac, click Updates > My status, click the status, then More > Save. WhatsApp says saved updates go to your Gallery or Google Photos (Android) or your Photos app (iPhone, Windows and Mac). WhatsApp’s Web page doesn’t list a save option. You can’t save someone else’s status.
How to post a status
- Photo or video: WhatsApp says tap Updates > Add status, pick a photo or video (or use the camera), add a caption, text, stickers, drawing or music, then tap Send.
- Text or voice: tap Updates > the pencil icon. Type, or tap and hold the microphone for a voice status.
- Audience: tap Status (Contacts) to choose who sees it. You can also tap @ to mention up to 5 people or groups in a photo or video status (not in text or voice statuses for now); WhatsApp says they’re notified and can reshare it.
- On Windows: open the Status tab, click the icon, then choose Text or Photos & videos. On WhatsApp Web: click the icon > My Status > Text or Photos & videos.
- WhatsApp’s Android page also lists layout statuses (2–6 photos) and location statuses, which show a place you choose, not your live location.
WhatsApp says you can’t turn off Status or go back to an older version of it. To control who sees yours, see WhatsApp privacy settings.
