WhatsApp Contacts Not Showing? Fix Numbers Instead of Names and Missing Contacts

If WhatsApp shows phone numbers or usernames instead of names, some or all of your contacts are missing, or a birthday you saved isn’t showing, our view is that a common cause is WhatsApp not having access to your phone’s contacts. WhatsApp suggests searching for the contact, checking its contacts permission, resetting the sync with your phone’s contacts, and checking international and work (Exchange) contacts.

Quick answer

First, search for the contact in the Chats search bar. Then check WhatsApp can see your contacts. Android: Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Permissions > Contacts and accounts > Allow. iPhone: Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Contacts > Full Access (or choose contacts with Limited Access). Still missing? Reset the contact sync, and make sure international numbers are saved in full international format.

Does this match what you see?

  • Chats show phone numbers or usernames instead of contact names.
  • Some or all of your contacts are missing from WhatsApp.
  • A birthday you saved isn’t showing.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Allow WhatsApp to access your contacts

Safe & reversible2 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

WhatsApp needs this permission to find your phone contacts who use WhatsApp.

iPhone & iPad

  1. Open Settings > Apps > WhatsApp.
  2. Tap Contacts and choose Full Access > Allow Full Access, or Limited Access and select the contacts to share, then tap Done.

Android

  1. Open Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Permissions.
  2. Tap Contacts and accounts, then Allow. WhatsApp says you can use your phone’s settings search to find it.

iPhone, Limited Access: WhatsApp says some names may not appear, and new contacts you add to your phone won’t show in WhatsApp until you give it access to them. It also says your chat history is saved whatever access you choose. WhatsApp says that without contacts access you can still create contacts in WhatsApp that don’t sync to your phone, add or change birthdays for contacts saved in WhatsApp, receive messages, and change settings.

Did it work? Contact names appear in your chats.

Fix 2: Reset contact sync

May sign you out5 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

WhatsApp gives these steps to reset the sync between WhatsApp and your phone’s contacts.

iPhone & iPad

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Contacts > WhatsApp.
  2. Choose Limited Access or Full Access.

Android

  1. Open Settings > Passwords, passkeys & accounts > WhatsApp (on some phones, Accounts and backup > Manage accounts > WhatsApp).
  2. Tap Remove account, then Remove account again.
  3. Open WhatsApp, tap the new chat button in Chats, then open the menu and tap Refresh.

Android: WhatsApp says a warning may say your WhatsApp messages, contacts and data will be deleted from your phone, but this isn’t the case. Resetting also removes contacts you’ve already deleted from your phone. To add the account back: Settings > Passwords, passkeys & accounts > Add account > WhatsApp.

Did it work? Your contact list updates.

Can’t see someone’s profile photo, last seen or about

WhatsApp says someone’s last seen and online, profile photo, about, stories or read receipts might be hidden because:

  • You or they changed privacy settings to hide it.
  • You both need to resync your contacts (see reset contact sync).
  • You’ve been blocked by them.
  • You need to save them as a contact, or they haven’t messaged you or saved you.
  • There’s a temporary network problem.

If people can’t see your photo, WhatsApp says they should check their privacy settings and resync their contacts too. To choose who sees your photo: Settings (or your profile picture) > Privacy > Profile picture (Android: Profile photo) > Everyone, My Contacts, My Contacts Except… or Nobody.

WhatsApp is grayed out in iPhone contacts settings

WhatsApp says to check for restrictions: Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. If it’s on, tap Contacts > Allow Changes. If WhatsApp is still grayed out or missing, WhatsApp says you might need to restore your phone, and points to Apple Support.

International or work contacts missing

  • International contacts: WhatsApp says to save the number in full international format. Our tip: start with + and the country code, and leave out any leading 0 that’s only used for calls within that country.
  • Work (Exchange) contacts: WhatsApp says your account administrator might not be allowing WhatsApp or other apps to access them. WhatsApp says Exchange accounts are likely to be work accounts. Our tip: ask your IT team.

How to know it worked

  • Your chats show contact names, and missing contacts appear when you start a new chat.

Still not working? Your next steps

  1. Can’t message someone you can see? See WhatsApp messages not sending or delivering.
