WhatsApp Storage Full? How to Free Up Space With Manage Storage

WhatsApp says that if your phone’s storage gets critically low, WhatsApp might not work properly. Its Manage storage tool shows roughly how much space WhatsApp uses, and each chat’s media sorted largest first, so you can clear old videos and forwarded files without losing your chats.

Quick answer

WhatsApp says go to Settings (iPhone: your profile picture) > Storage and data > Manage storage to see how much space WhatsApp uses. Delete large or often-forwarded items, or clear media from one chat with Clear chat > Clear media files (iPhone: Clear all media). WhatsApp says items deleted in Review and delete media are gone permanently and only for you.

Does this match what you see?

  • WhatsApp says your phone storage is low or prompts you to free up space.
  • WhatsApp is slow or not working properly on a nearly full phone.
  • You deleted media, but your phone storage barely changed.
  • Your WhatsApp backup storage is full.

Based on WhatsApp Help Center “How to free up storage on WhatsApp” (supplied by the site owner, 2026-10-30; Android and iPhone tabs).

Why this happens: the possible causes

WhatsApp counts two kinds of storage. From WhatsApp’s page.

WhatsApp storage types
TypeWhat it is
Device storageSpace on your phone used by WhatsApp media and files
Backup storageSpace your backup uses in WhatsApp cloud storage, or Google storage (Android) / iCloud (iPhone)
  • Large or often-forwarded mediaCheck this first

WhatsApp says you can free up storage by deleting items that are large or have been forwarded many times.

  • Copies left on your phonePossible

WhatsApp says deleted items might still be saved on your device, and you need to delete all copies to free up space.

Try these 60-second checks first

  • Open Storage and data > Manage storage (Android: from Settings; iPhone: from your profile picture) to see the total at the top.
  • Our tip: on Android, start with Larger than 5 MB in Review and delete media.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: See what WhatsApp is storing

Safe & reversible1 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

WhatsApp says the space it uses on your phone is shown at the top of Manage storage.

iPhone & iPad

  1. Tap your profile picture > Storage and data > Manage storage.
  2. Or, for one chat: open the chat, tap the chat name, then tap Manage storage. WhatsApp says this shows the chat’s media sorted from largest to smallest.
  3. To sort files, tap your profile picture > Chats > Chat backup > Manage your storage > Review and delete media, pick a chat, then tap the sort icon to sort by Newest, Oldest or Largest. Each item shows its file size in the top right corner.

Android

  1. Go to WhatsApp Settings > Storage and data > Manage storage.
  2. Or, for one chat: open the chat, tap the chat name, then tap Manage storage. WhatsApp says this shows the chat’s media sorted from largest to smallest.
  3. In Settings > Chats > Chat backup > Manage your storage > Review and delete media, use Search to find a chat or channel, and Filter List to sort by Newest, Oldest or Largest. Each item shows its file size.

Did it work? Our check: you can see which chats and files take the most space.

Fix 2: Delete large files and duplicates

WhatsApp says you can free up storage by deleting items that are large or have been forwarded many times.

iPhone & iPad

  1. Tap your profile picture > Chats > Chat backup > Manage your storage > Review and delete media.
  2. Choose a chat or channel, then tap an item, or tap Select to choose several (or Select all).
  3. Tap the trash can. If you selected starred items, choose Delete all except starred or Delete all. If there are duplicates (and no starred items), choose Delete items or Delete items and any copies.

Android

  1. Go to Settings > Chats > Chat backup > Manage your storage > Review and delete media.
  2. To find big files, tap Larger than 5 MB. Or choose a chat or channel.
  3. Tap and hold an item to select it, tap more items (or Select all), then tap the trash can.
  4. Choose Delete any copies to remove duplicates too, then tap Delete.

WhatsApp says items deleted this way are gone for you only; others in the chat can still see them. On Android, to check where an item came from first, open it and tap More > Show in chat, and long-press an item to Star it. Larger than 5 MB is listed on WhatsApp’s Android page.

Did it work? Our check: the total at the top of Manage storage goes down.

Clear media from one chat or group

  • Android: open the chat, tap More > More > Clear chat, select Clear media files, choose which types to remove, then tap Clear media.
  • iPhone: on the Chats tab, tap and hold the chat, tap Clear chat, select Clear all media, choose which types to remove, then tap Clear media.

WhatsApp says you can check or uncheck Videos and GIFs, Photos, Stickers, Documents and Audio, and select Clear starred messages to delete starred messages too.

To wipe everything in the chat (messages, media, links and files): on Android, tap Clear chat instead; on iPhone, open the chat, tap the contact or group name, then Clear chat > Clear all messages. WhatsApp says clearing a chat doesn’t delete the chat itself or remove you from a group.

One file at a time: search your chats, choose Photos, Videos or Documents, and open the item. On Android, tap More > Delete (you can also tick Also delete media received in this chat from the device gallery), then Delete for everyone or Delete for me. On iPhone, tap the trash can > Delete for me.

Backup storage full

  • See usage: WhatsApp says go to Settings > Chats > Chat backup. WhatsApp cloud storage usage shows under Manage your storage; then tap Review and delete media (on Android this also works for Google storage backups).
  • Delete your WhatsApp cloud storage backup: Settings > Chats > Chat backup > Manage your storage > Delete WhatsApp cloud storage backup (iPhone: Delete WhatsApp cloud backup), tap the trash can, then Delete. If WhatsApp cloud storage isn’t your current backup provider, go to Previous backups > WhatsApp cloud storage backups, tap the trash can, then Delete backup. WhatsApp says this is permanent: you can’t restore chats from it afterward.
  • Get more space: if WhatsApp cloud storage is your backup provider, WhatsApp says you can upgrade to 100 GB with WhatsApp Plus (Manage your storage > Get more cloud storage > WhatsApp Plus), or to Meta One Core (2 TB) or Premium (4 TB) in Settings > Subscriptions > your subscription > Explore plans.

Why the numbers don’t match

  • WhatsApp says when you delete something, it leaves your phone right away but stays in your backup until you next back up. To update it, go to Settings > Chats > Chat backup and tap Back up.
  • Your backup is stored more efficiently than files on your phone, so WhatsApp and your phone may show different totals. WhatsApp says this doesn’t affect your backup’s quality.
  • WhatsApp says deleted items might still be saved on your device, and you need to delete all copies to free up space. Our tip: check your phone’s gallery or files app.
  • Move WhatsApp to an SD card? WhatsApp says that’s not possible at the moment. To free up space for WhatsApp, it suggests moving other apps and media files to your SD card instead.

WhatsApp says if your phone’s storage gets critically low, WhatsApp might not work properly and might ask you to free up space. For storage outside WhatsApp, it suggests contacting your phone’s manufacturer (Android) or visiting Apple Support (iPhone).

How to know it worked

  • Our check: Manage storage shows less space used, and your phone has room again.
