WhatsApp Channels Not Working? Can’t Find, Follow or Reply

WhatsApp Channels are one-way updates from people and organizations, shown in the Updates tab, away from your chats. Most “channel not working” problems are about finding the right channel, channels being one-way, or notifications being off by default.

Quick answer

Can’t find a channel? WhatsApp says the directory is filtered by your country and language, so search its exact name or ask for its link, and check the person actually has a channel (not a group). You can’t reply to channels: only react or vote in polls. Notifications are muted by default, so turn them on per channel. Update WhatsApp, check your connection, then restart.

Does this match what you see?

  • A channel doesn’t show up when you search or browse.
  • You can’t reply to a channel update or message its admins.
  • You follow a channel but don’t get notifications.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: You can’t find or follow a channel

Safe & reversible5 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

WhatsApp lists the common reasons a channel won’t show up or can’t be followed.

  1. Check they have a channel. WhatsApp says channels are different from groups and chats. Ask the person to confirm and share their channel link.
  2. Search the exact name. WhatsApp says the directory is filtered by your country and language. On phones, go to Updates > Explore, or tap Search (magnifying glass) in Updates (you may need to swipe down to see it); on a computer, open the Channels icon, select the icon at the top, then Find channels (web) or Explore (Mac).
  3. Change region: in the Channels directory, change your region (phones: tap the three horizontal lines; computer: click your country name next to the globe) to see channels from elsewhere.
  4. It may be gone. WhatsApp says a channel deleted by its admin, or removed for breaking the Channels Guidelines (external site, opens in a new tab), can’t be found or followed.
  5. Update WhatsApp, check your internet connection, then restart WhatsApp or your device.

To follow, open the channel and tap or click Follow, or tap or click Follow next to it in the directory. You can preview a channel’s recent updates before following.

Did it work? Our check: the channel appears in your Channels list in Updates.

Fix 2: You don’t get channel notifications

Safe & reversible1 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

WhatsApp says channel notifications are muted by default.

  1. Open the channel and select the notification bell to turn notifications on (or do it from the channel info page). WhatsApp says you turn them on for each channel, and they then work like notifications for your personal messages.
  2. Still nothing? See WhatsApp notifications not working.

Did it work? Our check: you’re notified when the channel posts a new update.

Why you can’t reply to a channel

WhatsApp says channel updates are a one-way broadcast, not a conversation. Followers can’t reply to updates or message channel admins. You can react with emoji or vote in polls. Our tip: to contact a person or organization, use another way they list, such as their website.

Reactions, polls or voice updates not working?

  • WhatsApp says you can only react to updates from the past 30 days, with one reaction per update (you can change or remove it).
  • Admins can limit which emojis you can use in their channel.
  • Other viewers see how many of each emoji, but not yours. You can’t hide reactions or reaction counts.
  • Poll not taking your vote? Tap or click an option to vote, and again to remove it. WhatsApp says if the admin has turned off multiple answers, choosing an option clears your earlier choice. You can’t copy channel polls.
  • Voice update stopped or won’t stop? WhatsApp says voice updates keep playing on other screens within WhatsApp, with a mini player at the top to pause, play or close them. Its WhatsApp Web, Windows and Mac pages add: if you’ve opened another chat, go back to the channel to pause or stop it; the Web and Windows pages say going to the Status tab stops it. Select 1x to play at 1.5x or 2x speed.
  • Can’t transcribe a voice update? WhatsApp says transcripts are off by default: turn on Voice message transcripts in Settings > Chats and choose a language, then tap and hold the voice update > Transcribe (Android: tap More first). Transcripts aren’t supported on linked devices (WhatsApp Web, Mac or Windows). On iPhone, you need iOS 16 or newer with Siri turned on, and supported languages depend on your iOS version. WhatsApp says anything shared on a channel, including voice updates and transcripts, is public, and its iPhone page adds that channels aren’t end-to-end encrypted.
  • “Transcript unavailable”? WhatsApp says your transcript language may not match the voice update, some words may not be recognized (for example, because of background noise), or the language isn’t supported. On Android, WhatsApp’s voice-updates page lists English, Portuguese, Spanish and Russian; its transcripts page also lists Hindi. On iPhone, WhatsApp adds that transcripts fail if you’re on iOS older than 16 or Siri is off, and that if Siri wasn’t on when you turned transcripts on, you’ll need to download your transcript language. As of October 31, 2026, WhatsApp’s transcripts page (Android and iPhone) also said it was seeing issues with transcription and recommended keeping WhatsApp updated.
  • Your reactions stay if you leave the channel. WhatsApp says admins might see a reaction before you remove it, or if removing it fails, and you won’t be told if removal fails.

Can’t forward a channel update

  • WhatsApp says you can forward a channel update or channel link to up to 5 chats at once. If it’s already been forwarded, you can send it to 5 more chats, including at most one group; if it’s been forwarded many times, only one chat at a time.
  • Forward to Status? WhatsApp’s Web and Windows pages say you can’t do this from WhatsApp Web (the Windows page lists no Status option either): use your primary device, your phone, instead. On Android, iPhone and Mac, select the forward icon by the update, then My status.
  • Forwarded updates are labeled “Forwarded” and link back to the channel. WhatsApp says everyone can see the number of forwards, but not who forwarded.
  • Share the whole channel: open the channel, then its name > Forward (inside WhatsApp) or Copy link / Share (outside it).

Who can see that you follow a channel

  • WhatsApp says people viewing a channel can’t see who follows it, and can’t see your name, phone number or profile picture, your reactions or your poll votes.
  • Channel admins can see your profile name, and, depending on your privacy settings, might see your profile photo next to your reactions or poll votes.
  • Poll votes: WhatsApp says other viewers only see how many people chose each option. Admins may see your profile photo next to your vote (depending on your privacy settings), and, if they’ve saved you as a contact, the name they saved you as.
  • You’re not subscribed automatically: you choose what to follow, and you can unfollow at any time.

Verified badges, ads and recommendations

  • WhatsApp says a verified badge means it has verified the channel as authentic. It says channel verification isn’t publicly available yet, and requests to verify channels aren’t accepted at the moment.
  • Channels labeled “Ad” are promoted channels.
  • Why these recommendations? WhatsApp says it recommends channels using things like a channel’s followers and reactions, your general location and language, your device type, app version and connection, and your activity on channels (what you follow, view and search). It says your personal chats and calls stay end-to-end encrypted and aren’t used. On a phone, recommendations show under Find channels to follow at the bottom of the Updates tab; on a computer, at the bottom of the Channels or Updates page.
  • WhatsApp says requests to add channels to the Explore, Recommendations or Suggestions sections aren’t accepted.

Create and share your own channel

WhatsApp says a channel lets you send one-way updates (text, images, videos, stickers, links, audio and polls) to an unlimited audience. Followers won’t see your profile name, picture or phone number.

  • Create: on a phone, go to Updates, tap the icon there, then Create channel > Continue (computer: open the Channels icon, then Create channel), add a name (and an optional description and icon), then Create channel. On phones you can then invite contacts, or tap Skip. You can change the name, description or icon any time.
  • Admins: you can invite up to 16 more admins, who can change channel info and settings, post, edit and delete updates, and see metrics. WhatsApp says admins are visible to each other.
  • Share it: your channel has a link and QR code to share in chats, your status or other apps. WhatsApp says people can also find channels by searching or browsing the directory.
  • WhatsApp says the owner and admins are responsible for keeping content safe, relevant and age-appropriate under its Channels Guidelines (external site, opens in a new tab).
  • AI content labels: WhatsApp says admins in some countries must, by law, label channel updates that share AI-made or AI-edited media, and WhatsApp may label them automatically there. To add one, tap and hold (or open) the update after sharing it, then open its menu (on WhatsApp Web, hover over it first) > Add AI content label > Add label; this works for channel status too. WhatsApp says labels can’t be removed once added, and the feature is still rolling out.
