How to Delete Your WhatsApp Account (and What Happens to Your Chats)

Our note: deleting the WhatsApp app doesn’t delete your account. WhatsApp says you delete the account from within WhatsApp, on your primary device, and that it’s irreversible: it erases your message history, removes you from your groups and deletes your backup, and WhatsApp can’t restore chats or backups from deleted accounts.

Quick answer

On iPhone, tap Settings (or your profile picture) > Account > Delete My Account. On Android, tap More Options (three dots) > Settings > Account > Delete my account. Enter your phone number in full international format and confirm. WhatsApp says you must do it from your primary device, not a linked device, and it can’t be reversed.

Does this match what you see?

  • You want to close your WhatsApp account for good.
  • You deleted the app, but people can still see you on WhatsApp.
  • You no longer have the phone number or phone your WhatsApp used.
  • You can’t find the delete option on a linked device such as WhatsApp Web.

Why this happens: the possible causes

Uninstalling, deleting and losing access aren’t the same. Our own summary of WhatsApp’s page.

Ways a WhatsApp account goes away
What happensResult
You uninstall the appOur note: your account still exists
You delete your account in WhatsAppAccount deleted for good
Account deactivated and not re-registeredDeleted after 30 days
Account not connected to WhatsAppGenerally deleted after 120 days (365 in the US)
  • You deleted the app, not the accountCheck this first

Our note: uninstalling WhatsApp leaves your account in place. Deleting the account in WhatsApp (Delete my account on Android, Delete My Account on iPhone) removes it, as does WhatsApp’s automatic removal of deactivated or inactive accounts.

Try these 60-second checks first

  • Use your main phone: WhatsApp says you can’t delete the account from a linked device.
  • If you run a channel, add another admin first, or delete the channel first.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Delete your WhatsApp account

Read first: can remove data3 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

WhatsApp says you must be logged into the account you want to delete, and deletion only works from your primary device, not from linked devices.

iPhone & iPad

  1. Open WhatsApp and tap Settings or your profile picture.
  2. Tap Account > Delete My Account.
  3. Enter your phone number in full international format and tap Delete My Account.

Android

  1. Open WhatsApp and tap More Options (three vertical dots) > Settings > Account > Delete my account.
  2. Enter your phone number in full international format and tap Delete account.
  3. Choose a reason from the dropdown.
  4. Tap Delete account.

Did it work? Our check: WhatsApp signs you out and the account is gone. WhatsApp says it may take up to 90 days to delete your information.

What deleting your account does

WhatsApp says deleting your account will:

  • Delete your account from WhatsApp and all your devices (WhatsApp’s Android page), and your account info and profile photo (its iPhone page).
  • Erase your message history (Android page), and delete your chat backup (Google Account backup on Android; WhatsApp message history backup on iPhone).
  • Remove you from all your groups.
  • Remove you as a channel admin or follower (your updates and reactions stay), and delete channels you created if there are no other admins.

WhatsApp also says:

  • You can’t get the account back.
  • It may take up to 90 days to delete your information, and copies may stay longer in disaster-recovery backups. Your information isn’t available to you on WhatsApp during that time.
  • It doesn’t affect information other people have about you, such as their copy of messages you sent, or information about groups you created.
  • It may keep certain log data, separated from anything that identifies you, and may keep information for legal issues, terms violations or harm prevention. Your information shared with other Meta companies is also deleted.

If you run a WhatsApp channel

  • WhatsApp says to keep your channel, add other admins first. Ownership passes to the admin who has followed the channel longest.
  • If you’re the only admin, the channel is deleted permanently: you can’t share updates or recover it or its follower list. Existing updates stay visible to followers, but non-followers can’t find it.
  • To delete the channel and your account, WhatsApp says delete the channel first. It also says your channel and channel updates may not be deleted automatically.
  • Updates you shared in channels aren’t deleted with your account. Delete them first if you want them gone.

Lost your phone number or phone?

WhatsApp says if you can’t delete your account because your line was canceled, you lost your number, or you no longer have your device, it will still be removed automatically:

  • Deactivated accounts are deleted 30 days after deactivation, if not re-registered.
  • Inactive accounts (not connected to WhatsApp) are generally deleted after 120 days of inactivity, or 365 days in the US.

People still see you on WhatsApp after deleting

WhatsApp says ask them to restart WhatsApp. That refreshes their contacts and should remove you, though it won’t delete their chats with you.

How to know it worked

  • Our check: you’re signed out on all devices and contacts no longer see you after restarting WhatsApp.

Still not working? Your next steps

  1. Want to keep your chats on a new phone instead? See WhatsApp chat transfer.
  2. Banned rather than deleting? See WhatsApp account banned.
