WhatsApp Community Problems: Can’t Join, Post, Leave or Add People

A WhatsApp community brings related groups together under one name, with an Announcements group for admins and an optional general chat. Most community problems come down to who’s allowed to do what (admins, owners or members) and the size limits.

Quick answer

Only community admins can post in Announcements, invite people and remove members (community or group admins can remove a group); only the owner can deactivate it. A community holds up to 100 groups and 2,000 members, and general chat up to 1,024. You can’t leave Announcements without leaving the whole community, and the owner who created it must deactivate it to leave. There’s no search for communities: you need an invite.

Does this match what you see?

  • You can’t send messages in a community’s Announcements group.
  • You can’t join general chat, or can’t add someone to a community.
  • You can’t find a community by searching for it.
  • You want to leave a community, or remove someone from it.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: You can’t post in Announcements

Safe & reversible1 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

WhatsApp says only community admins can send announcements.

  1. As a member, WhatsApp says you can reply and react to announcements, vote in and react to polls, see the number of members, report an announcement and mute notifications.
  2. To chat with other members, use the community’s general chat or another group in it, if there is one.

WhatsApp says everyone can see the total number of members in Announcements, and admins can see who they are. You can’t leave Announcements without leaving the whole community.

Did it work? Our check: you can reply to an announcement or post in a community group.

Fix 2: You can’t join general chat, or someone can’t be added

Safe & reversible2 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

WhatsApp gives size limits and approval settings that stop people joining.

  1. General chat full? WhatsApp says it holds up to 1,024 members; when it’s full, new members can’t join or be added until someone leaves or is removed. Find it under Groups you can join.
  2. Waiting for approval? If an admin has turned on Approve New Members for general chat (it’s off by default), WhatsApp says they must review every request before you can join.
  3. Joining a group in the community: WhatsApp says open the Communities tab > the community (iPhone: See all; Windows: View all). On Mac, go to Chats > the community name instead. Then open Groups you can join, select the group, then Join group or Request to join. If you see Request sent (phones: pending groups are at the bottom of the list), you’re waiting for approval (select Cancel request to withdraw it). Groups hold up to 1,024 members (1,025 with the creator).
  4. Community full? WhatsApp says a community holds up to 2,000 members (counting everyone in its groups and Announcements). No one new can be added until someone leaves.
  5. Can’t find the community? WhatsApp says there’s no way to search for or discover communities: you need an invite link or to be added by an admin.

Did it work? Our check: the community or general chat appears in your Chats or Communities tab.

Invite or add people (admins)

WhatsApp says only community admins can invite people. On web and Android, open Community info > Invite; on iPhone, Community info > Add members > Invite to community via link; on phones you can also use the community’s menu > Invite members; on Windows and Mac, click the community name > Members (Mac: Add Members) > Invite to group/community via link. You can send or copy the link, or share a QR code on phones and Mac. Or choose Add members to add people directly. WhatsApp says people you add directly can accept the invitation or exit the community.

Leave a community

  1. Open the community, then Community info (on a computer, the community name > Community tab).
  2. Tap or click Exit community. You may be offered Report to WhatsApp, which WhatsApp says sends it the last five messages.
  3. Choose Exit community (keeps your chat history) or Exit and delete for me (then Delete). On Android, WhatsApp says you can also choose to delete the chat’s media from your gallery.
  • WhatsApp says leaving a community also leaves every group you’re in that’s part of it, and leaving its Announcements group means leaving the community.
  • Just want it out of the way? WhatsApp says you can archive it instead, which hides it but keeps your groups. Or mute notifications.
  • Created it? WhatsApp says the admin who created the community must deactivate it to leave.
  • Only want to leave general chat? WhatsApp says you can exit general chat at any time without leaving the community (the owner can’t leave it).

Rejoin a community you left

  • WhatsApp says use the invite link, or rejoin any group in the community. You’re added to Announcements automatically, can choose to join general chat, and can add yourself to more groups, including all the groups you were removed from when you left.
  • Removed by an admin? A community or group admin needs to re-invite you. Were you a community admin? Another community admin needs to re-invite you, and you can ask them to make you a community admin again.
  • Left more than once? WhatsApp says after leaving twice you must wait 24 hours to rejoin, and the wait gets longer each time you leave, up to 81 days.
  • Community deactivated? WhatsApp says a community is deactivated if its creator is banned, and even if the ban is lifted you can’t get back in: it has to be created again.

Add or remove members and groups

  • Remove a member: in Community info, select the member (or the menu beside them) > Remove from community > Remove. WhatsApp says only the creator and admins can do this, and it also removes them from every group in the community.
  • Can’t change the community description or icon? WhatsApp says only a community admin can change the description and icon: open Community info > the Community tab (Android: Edit community info; Mac: the community name > Community > Edit).
  • Community admins: WhatsApp says only a community admin can make someone else an admin (Web: community name > View members; Android and Windows: Community info; iPhone: More Info; then the member > Make admin or Dismiss as admin > OK), and a community can have up to 20 admins. The creator can’t be dismissed and stays an admin unless they disable the community; other admins can remove themselves.
  • Can’t remove someone? WhatsApp says if they own a group in the community, you must unlink that group first.
  • Can’t add a group to the community? WhatsApp says only admins can add existing groups (members can suggest them for approval), and admins can limit new groups to admins. A group with pending member requests can’t be added until you review them. You may also be temporarily blocked, for a few hours and up to 24 hours, as a security measure after spam reports or if the group has recently added members.
  • Suggested a group? WhatsApp says suggestions waiting for approval show at the top of the community under Pending groups. On Android and iPhone, it says you can set a new group’s visibility to Visible or Hidden when you add or suggest it.
  • Remove a group: community admins can open Community info > Manage groups and remove it; group admins can open Group info > Remove from community > Remove. WhatsApp says the group keeps working for its members, but other community members won’t see it.

Deactivate a community (owners)

WhatsApp says only the owner who created the community can deactivate it: open Community info (iPhone: under Community and Announcement, tap Community; Mac: click the community name > Community), scroll down and tap Deactivate community > Deactivate > Deactivate.

  • All groups are unlinked and keep working as regular groups in Chats. Announcements and general chat become read-only: you can still view their messages.
  • WhatsApp says if the owner deactivates their WhatsApp account, their communities and Announcements groups are deactivated too, and admins and members are removed. Our note: that’s one reason a community can suddenly disappear.

Create a community

In Chats, tap or click the new chat icon > New community (then Get started on phones and Mac), enter a name (up to 100 characters), add an optional description and icon, then create it. WhatsApp says an Announcements group is made automatically, and you can link up to 100 groups.

WhatsApp says you can’t currently create a community on the WhatsApp Business app, though you can own one if ownership was transferred to you or you created it on the regular app first.

Community events not working

  • Can’t see an event? WhatsApp says you can’t see or join events created before you joined the group: the creator has to delete it and create a new one. The Events section only shows upcoming events.
  • Can’t create an event in advance? WhatsApp says if disappearing messages is on, you might not be able to; turn it off to use the full calendar.
  • Can’t invite someone or forward an event? WhatsApp says you can’t invite people who aren’t in the group, or forward an event to another chat.
  • Can’t edit or cancel it? WhatsApp says only the event creator can, and there are no co-hosts for now.
  • To create one: open the community group, tap or click the attach icon > Event, add a name, date and time (plus an optional description, location, call link or end time), then send it. WhatsApp says WhatsApp call links can be added to events up to 1 year ahead, only community admins can create events in the Announcements group, and on phones you can turn on Allow guests so people can bring an extra guest.
  • To respond: Communities > the community > Events > the event > Respond (Going, Maybe, Not going, and on phones Going with guest).
  • Notifications: WhatsApp’s pages differ on who’s told about changes. Its Web, Windows and Mac pages for event creators say people who answered Going are notified of edits, and Going or Maybe of cancellations; its phone pages say Going, Going with guest or Maybe are notified of edits and when the event begins. Edits are also announced in the group chat.

Privacy and safety in communities

  • WhatsApp says your phone number is only visible to community admins, people who have saved your number, and people who have it from other chats.
  • Your “who can add me to groups” privacy setting also applies to communities. See WhatsApp privacy settings.
  • WhatsApp says messages that have already been forwarded can only be forwarded to one group at a time in communities.
  • You can report a community or announcement, block people and mute noisy groups. See block and report.

Community suspended or “no longer available”

If you see “This community is suspended” or “This community is no longer available”, see suspended groups and communities for what it means and how admins can request a review.

How to know it worked

  • Our check: you can see the community in Chats and do what your role allows (post, reply, invite or manage).
